  3. My thought, they feel less vulnerable to predators on their feet already vs. bedded down. I have nothing to back it up other than things I've observed over the years.

  4. Wow, sunset adding a minute from sunrise. Another minute longer to hunt the afternoons. Sometimes, that's all you need.

  5. Was thinking of another nasty sit. The wind finally dropped off at 4:30. Deer started coming out of the thicket heading for the wheat. Not in range and I shouldn't of ate the cheese for lunch.

  8. Got a strong west wind this afternoon. Keeps switching north and south. I'm going to set up west of the corn field in a hedgerow. Going to bring my phone and tripod and maybe video the hunt. Probably see nothing but why not!

  9. Just hunted an hour tonight. On my way out 6 deer were in the corn. I stalked (no pun intended) to about 40 yards. All good looking deer but chose not to shoot. Just a bit too dark and I have a commitment at 6:30. I'll sit in the field by a utility pole or in a box by field edge tomorrow.

  10. The thing is a lot of suburban Deer hunting many times has some sort of weapons restrictions, much of the hunting in those areas are limited to archery only. I would say with limited cover they would be a bit easier to find. Al

  11. I agree; so, it depends more on OUR behavior when theyre around us than the fact that theyre around us and make contact w/ us, correct? I remember reading an article in D&DH where a hunter described his tactics for getting a wily farm buck; what he did, was, observe the deer for awhile before even trying to hunt him. Through his observations, he noted that the Buck was NEVER alarmed by the farmhands being around in the fields performing farm chores like mowing, baling, etc, despite the loud noises made from the equipment. As a matter of fact, one of the hands would blast Spanish music really loud while riding on the tractor. The hunter, then, used this info and drove to his spot blasting spanish music , noting the deer were conditioned to that noise and didnt alarm them. Cant do the same thing, though, with a big woods deer , so, I guess theyre harder to hunt , overall?

  12. I spoke to soon. We almost forgot about my one daughters play practice Saturday morning so now both have things going on Saturday morning at the same time. Time for my wife and I to divide and conquer.

  13. I was debating on whether to let him walk this morning but considering it’s my last day out and I haven’t had any venison in 3 years …… I decided to take him. He’s a small rack 5 pointer but big enough to kick my ass getting him to my truck. Good luck to everyone who’s still deer hunting.

  14. It continued to rain right up until I went to bed last night, and I woke up to about 3 inches of snow. That figures! It is exactly the way my entire season went this year. I spent many hours out there this season and it was the most uneventful I can remember. Other than the little spike I passed about three times, a small doe, a momma with her medium sized fawn, and what I believe was a nice buck who escaped being shot thanks to heavy rain, fog and low light making it impossible to get him in my scope, it was a deer desert for me this firearm season. I think I may be done for the year. If I have not been able to even get a deer within rifle range since bow season, I don't expect things to change and have me get within bow range, and I have almost zero confidence with my muzzle loader so I always restrict it's use of that to bow, or at the most shotgun range. One thing is certain. If I do not decide to sell my place by next year, I plan to totally brush hog every acre of field next year and return it to what it once was. Also, I may finally try to find myself a new hunting partner. Since my Uncle who had been my hunting partner since around 1976 when he returned to the area after he had retired from the Army passed a few years ago, it just has not been the same for me. I still get out there and hammer it pretty hard, but it feels like just going through the motions. Good luck to those out there today in the snow.
