I shot a 6 pt chasing a doe. Not ideal but I figured as the season went it was the right thing. Nephew shot his first buck a two point! lol We took them to the processor tonight man there are some real nice bucks in there. Oh and I shot a big button buck last hour of bow season.

My 16 year old grandson shot a doe this morning . He also shot a doe with his crossbow a couple weeks ago .

2 bucks me and my son took, an 8 on opening day and a 9 on Tuesday .

Buddy shot a 6 pt yesterday morning. Came right in to a Tinks bottle. Nice deer!

I was in A double ladder stand . I saw 2 bucks coming from the neighbor's North property . A bunch of saplings block any shot But I Had the scope on in the bigger buck as it was walking along . i expected to take a shoulder shot but there was a dip in the ground . when it hit the opening , I shot and it dropped on the spot . upon further review , i shot him in the neck as he was in the dip . No meat wasted . some time you just get lucky . It was only about a 90 yard with the NEF 20-06 single shot . Here is the buck laying . I zoomed in on it as best I could with the phone camera .You can see the deer laying in the middle of the picture between the 2 big trees .The entrance Hole was hard to spot But not the exit hole .

Sitting in some blow downs with my son, just passed a spike at 10 yards. He’s shakin like a leaf.

Took a button buck last night. My mistake thought it was a small does Mom. Texted my brother for the quad and three racked bucks were together coming through the woods. Crazy stuff.

Bagged a mid size 4 pointer last night. I was watching it at distance fir a while when it hit me that with like 30 hours in the woods since Saturday it was the first shoot able deer I'd seen and just went for it. Single shot, 60 or so yards. Deer in the freezer may take up space but it tastes better than tags.

I have 2 different stand locations. The first one about legal dark it is too dark to make out a legal deer so I wouldn't take the shot. In my second stand, higher up on a mountain, I can see clearly 1/2 hour after. Know your limits and your targets. Sent from my SM-S906U using Tapatalk

Gray squirrels, red squirrels, owl and fisher, is the extent of it so far this morning. A few distant shots otherwise dead quiet. If nothing happens here in a little bit I may just go back to the house and “kill” a cup of coffee. Lol

It can all change in a minute. stay after it

All depends on the day, conditions and where you are sitting. Inside the woods with no snow on the ground your lucky to get and extra 10-15 min before/after due to darkness. Open field no snow that might stretch out to 20 min. Now you add snow in the mix and there is a good chance that you can utilize the full 30 min before and after. That's just my experience anyways. I don't mind the change at all and think it makes since and aligns with every other state in the country.

To be honest I think it is pretty much impossible to stay warm sitting still for extended periods on cold windy days without being bundled up in somewhat bulky clothes. Sweating and getting your base layers wet from it will be a big problem. You can get by with sweating so long as you stay away from cotton materials period, good poly or wool next to your skin for any base layers. I have always had decent luck staying warm in real cold weather wearing high quality wool from top to bottom. While it is bulky and heavy I will take that over freezing my ass off. Al

Son passed another spike this evening, 5 doe went trottin through the field with no shots at them.

Personally I would have no problem getting in there and clipping some of those obstacles, just clip them and let them lay and leave. Al

Passed on a spike. He was wide open and broad side but I let him go. I pulled the phone out and took a few pics when he got behind me.

Well after only missing a couple work days since last deer season, I earned the time off for this one. For the next 2 1/2 weeks, with the exception of my usual routine chores around the homestead, I can hang out in the woods at my choosing. Good luck to all of you who will be out in the morning. We have a farm at the beginning of my road. The houses and land are rented to out-of-state hunters. Really nice people that come and go. As I was leaving for work yesterday I noticed a pickup driving along the cut corn, tailgate down and this monster inside. I stopped thinking they would come up the road but they were actually going to gut it in the hedgerow. I left but stopped in on my way home. First off they are such a nice family of hunters and get the job done. The wife shot this in the evening and they backed out. High double lung shot. Found it in the morning just by the way the leaves were scuffed up. It bedded next to a big log. No ground shrinkage here. 13 points non typical. Deer has everything you want! I was so happy for them. They were packing up to move onto a new lease and meeting up with family for thanksgiving. He gave me a half hour to talk about the deer. Congrats to them. I must say that is the biggest I have seen in my area.

I got out one of my Blaze Orange vests to wear over my jacket . No sense in wearing camo and taking a chance on getting shot . I bought a 20 ga Savage bolt action shotgun to use in Monroe County but use my NEF 25-06 single shot rifle in the other areas that I hunt . Git 'r done !

I enjoy the Cuddeback trail cameras As they send me pictures from 50 miles away . I have never shot Any deer that I had on camera . I do get some pictures of horse riders and tresspassers on the cameras .

I have killed a half dozen Deer with a neck shot and they all dropped right where they stood. As for the ethical part several factors come into play. Distance is a big one, I use the neck shot for relatively short shots, under 100 yards. A firearm that is capable of precise bullet placement with a good hunting bullet. A good steady rest with total confidence in my ability to make the shot. I aim for the center anywhere on the neck, I think it is a fairly big target and an easy shot to make when one has the right circumstances. Al

Yesterday I decided to pick up 2 boxes of 30.06 ammunition for this and next deer season, and to check one of my rifles that has been put away for a long time. After waiting almost a half hour to get anyone to come to the sporting goods section, the fella that showed up immediately starts apologizing for how bad the process is to purchase the ammunition. Little did I realize how bad it would turn out. After giving my name, address, height, weight, address, occupation, showing my driver license, and social security number, and writing the check to pay, the damned computer said the purchase was being placed on some sort of delay for review, by who the hell knows, and I could not buy the ammunition. The clerk said it could have a determination “in a half hour or as long as 2 days”. WTF!!!! This shit has got to change! NY has gone to hell in a hand basket! The way things are here, I really think it’s just a matter of time before I sell everything and go back to Alaska.

To be fair, we basically didnt pay attention to that time before the change anyhow. If its too dark, don't shoot. Cloudy and raining we are cut off by about 10 minutes on both ends of the day. Fields are pretty much the only place its light enough for the end or beginning of legal ive found.

I felt the same way about this year. Missed a few big ones. Opening day I punched my tage on a decent 6 nothing great. I just had a feeling I better shoot this deer. He was chasing a doe under my stand for 10 minutes. He never grunted but the Doe was making a wheezing noise I really have never heard. I shot him she walked off a few yards and just looked at me catching her breath.

I specifically took note of the shooting conditions in the evening. Sunset was at 4:47. Add the half hour makes quitting time at 5:17 PM. I was hunting in a section of woods with a heavy hemlock overstory, and I have to say that if I had been shooting at anything at that time, it would have been difficult to even see the crosshairs in the scope. Yes, I could walk through the woods without bumping into trees, but a deer at any distance would have looked like a fuzzy shadow. I am happy that they made blaze orange/fluorescent pink mandatory along with this change in hunting hours. Walking out of the woods would be pretty scary without my blaze orange coat and hat. I also wonder about finding first blood with a marginal wound in that semi-dark time of night.

I have always tried to be in stand well before sun up, and often stay well after...just so as to not spook critters as bad. Even with the old times, I often stopped officially hunting...but may still be on stand....well before legal stopping. With snow on the ground...big game changer. Overall, I dont think it has changed how I hunt.

It has been real quiet here in Bristol. I am hunting state land and feeling pretty lonely up there. Where the heck is everybody? I always thought it would be nice to have all this state land to myself, but there seems to be just enough people to put the deer in the survival mode and not enough people to get the deer up and moving.

Haven't seen shit this weekend. Saturday I saw a small doe moving behind a brush line about 8am Sunday I didn't see shit Was out this morning (Monday), didn't even see squirrels. Never had such a quiet opening weekend, I need to spend some time re-thinking my game plan. I usually hunt the woods, I'm thinking coming down from the hill and hunting some more lowland areas, maybe see if I can get myself closer to water.

My friend has a swamp on his property and he bought the property because of that and he duck hunts . He goes out with his gas powered leaf blower and clears a path to his 'shooting chair' . He sometimes see deer checking out the noise .

Perfect spot for a light north breeze. Hope the one doing this shows up.

Mission accomplished this am, saw 3 doe, a 3 pt tailing one 15 yards by me, got my sticks on the tree, massive scrape 20 yards away. 4 fawns bedded by me had to spook em off to leave.

I am ready , will be out at my sisters property in 9A and weather shows high 50F and sunshine. Get it done!

I am pretty much ready for the gun opener . I will be in Geneseo with 2 of my sons and grandson . . We have our stands figured out for the opener and will have the woods pretty much covered . No idea who might be hunting on the adjacent properties . Being optimistic .

Yeah I'm ready. We lost one oldtimer this year which will put a damper on things. 88 years still going strong and had an accident in his barn. Doing something he shouldnt of be doing. My buddy Steve is a detective and is on a huge case, he can't make it. My camp usually has 6 hunters we will have 5. We will have a 14 year old up here hunting with his grandfather! Weather looks real sketchy next week. Stands are set everyone knows where they are going.
