If I am hunting the back 40 or one of the local wood lots I usually only carry a small hip bag/pack (just the basic things I need for a few hr. hunt) But, when we hunt the big range area or the deep woods on the central Adirondacks, day pack has a full supply of survival goods............................first aid needs for at least two people, a stash of em. food, a heavy tarp/space blanket, etc. A few of the guys I hunt with bust my arse big time about how heavy my pack is( it weighs in at @ 45lbs), but nobody was laughing the day one of them fell and ran a stick in his rt. eye................. I will carry it all day long just for the comfort of knowing I am prepared. I have taken several outdoor survival courses at the local community college through the adult ed. program as well. FDXX75

Anyone know the Range on this gun?? Rossi 45lc
FULLDRAWXX75 replied to Muzzy's topic in General Hunting
I found this thread at another site, read it and make up your own mind. IMO, it is a novelty gun with now real useful purpose. I wouldn't even trust it to save my life as a Home Security Weapon. FDXX75 -
Hey Doc- Look at you, banging away on the computer like a pro and I'll bet your first phone was a couple soup cans with a string on 'em. I guess we are spoiled Hey Law, Go easy on him, he's still sad about the death of his first pet dinasour ........................... LOL. FDXX75

I guess my biggest question would be, why steal the GPS in the first place if they wound up leaving it behind??????? Secondly, why travel out of state to some unknown location that could very well be an apartment building or a POS run down trailer someplace. Seems like an awful lot of work just to rob those folks. Hell, most robbers aren't that damn ambitious...........................hit and run tactic is the way to roll. FDXX75

DEC Formulating Their "5 Year Deer Management Plan"
FULLDRAWXX75 replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
G-man, The reason you are seeing more bucks is due to the drop in doe numbers, known fact that does will drive the bucks off the property to take the prime feeding areas. Fewer does, frees up some of those feeding area's. Also, few does means more competition with the bucks during the rut. Before we lost our property in Broome Co., we always hunted does during the archery season, and took as many as we could get permits for. We also, always saw bucks and most yrs. we tagged out on permits and reg. buck tags. Granted, there were only three of us hunting @ 300 acre with an occasional neighbor dropping in once in a while. But never more than 6 hunters at a given time. I know for a fact the deer traffic changed due to hunting pressures from connecting properties and hunting pressure. Our property bordered a rather large piece of "Posted" private property that the deer would run back and forth to take cover. The "old" theory of not shooting does when the laws permit it, has put the deer population in the state it is now. I my own back yard, I see 8-10 does to every one buck. Not good. IMO, DEC needs to enstate a few last day "doe days" in the Northern Zone like they used to back in the 60's, or an either sex deer kill on the last day of the seasons to thin the herds some. FDXX75 -
Yep, it's been almost a yr. and a half now. They are still in business, under a new name......................Custom Brass and Bullets. Looks like they are mostly marketing other brands of bullets, none of their own. FDXX75

So you spent 4 hrs. road time, lets say @ 200 miles in gas money to pick up some trail cams on special..............................I think, they would have been shipping them to my house, free postage. Now that would be a working survey...................................So what did you actually save after all the time and gas money?????? FDXX75

You're right on all counts. Yep, cut a point on some wooden stakes and hammer em in there; usuall in a foot on two of water. I use the kwikee quiver type screw in mounts where you have the bracket on the camera unit and can just slide them on and off the screw in part of the mount.Losing them in the creek? Yep, happened a few times, now I'm a little better at watching the weather and setting them accordingly. But to get the best pictures you have to aim them straight away and therefore have to move them up and down as the water level often changes. You have to keep on top of it, but it's a lot of fun as well, especially when you're a trail cam freak like I am. Dang, You guys just sparked an idea.........................details at 11. FDXX75

I agree with the above statement to an extent. Rising costs & the unknowledgable staffing is dead on. But, I still find some things to be reasonable or cheaper from Cabela's compared to other catalog or on-line sources. Also, their quality and customer service is above the rest IMO. I was slightly disappointed a few yrs. ago when I drove to Reading, PA to the newly opened Cabela's store, I had a list of items I wanted to fill and only found 40% of the list in the store. Now, mind you..................these items were not odd ball/crazy stuff, pretty standard items. Well, when I asked about the stuff, I was told the store was having trouble keeping up with the volume of people that were visiting the location since it opened.............................But, most of the items I was looking for were not stock items either. I was very pleased and impressed with the staff and their knowledge/helpfulness compared to that of BPS. I was rather put off by BPS's staff attitude and lack of customer concern. FDXX75

Very Cool, Very similar to our NY herd at the Seneca Army Depot. An Iroquois legend proves to be true.. A very unusual herd of deer...whitetails...yes, but more. Wait until you see these unusual deer! Wisconsin near border with Michigan's U. P. To all native people all white animals are sacred. Let's hope that they stay protected!!!! Turn up the sound and enjoy! http://www.pbs.org:80/wgbh/pages/frontline/video/flv/generic.html?s=inwi10s22a3q81f FDXX75

I would have to disagree with the the part about the " your head gives off a very high concentration of your total ordor".....................I know for a fact, several guys who sit on the source of their high concentration of odor.........................LOL. I do agree with you about the odor control hype, I think alot of it is market driven. Have I ever been winded and been told by a deer "I know you are over there somewhere" sure, do I worry about my scent and wind direction all the time..............no, do I shoot deer consistantly..........yes. how did you stay warm in there with 10" of snow lol im sure you have heaters but how did you vent them? Geno, The first night was not so bad, as the temps. started out warm and then dropped very quickly. I knew immediately upon waking up it was considerably colder than the night before and could tell we had snow by looking at the sides of the tent. The temps. went up into the high 30's that day, just enough to melt the snow soft and make everything mushy/wet, then started dropping again. That afternoon, the last guy hiked in to stay the night and hunt in the morning, he carried in a small cooker/heater unit with a small propane tank...................we set it up in the tent to take the chill off, BIG MISTAKE!!!!! The combination of heat, our warm breath and the extreme cold temps. outside..........................the moisture on the inside of the tent froze (@1/4" of ice) I slept in my hunting clothes that night and still froze my arse off. That was the last time we attempted to tent camp that late int he season or at that high of an elevation. Break down of camp was a treat, tent was frozen to the ground, ice inside and out.................what a mess. I wound up rolling the tent up in a ball and carrying it out under my arm. It hung in my basement for a week drying out..................................LOL. All the fun and excitement of tent camping, an O the memories. FDXX75

I have never been lost....................................temporarily misplaced once or twice, but never lost. LMAO I have a handheld GPS, but only use it when scouting or plotting locations for hunting season. I think I just may change the location name on my swamp watch to "HOME", it is about 3.5 miles into no mans land, and 70+ miles from my house....................lol. FDXX75

I do believe that is a buck that has already lost his antlers.................look at the second pic, just up and to the rt. of the rt. eye is a circular patch of standing up hair, as if it was previously around the base of an antler, the other side looks similar. FDXX75

I always add pork scrap or trimmings to my venison when grinding, we have a "real" butchers shop in town and I get all my casings, scrap/trimmings(as they call it) from there. The "scrap/trimmings" are the exactly that.....................the pieces of pork trimmed/cut off the loins & roasts, it is a very good marble blend of meat and fat. I generally mix up to 30% pending on what I intend to do with the mixture, by adding the pork it acts as a binder for the venison and also allows the venison to stay moister and retain more of its natural flavor instead of coming out crumbly and tasteless. Nearly every single sausage mix will instruct you to add some form of pork to the venison to achieve the proper consistancy. Also, the additional juices help blend and hold the flavor of the seasonings much better compared to straight uncut venison. Personally, I would not walk across the street for straight ground venison even if it was free...........................................I dislike the texture and taste of it in that form. And yes there is a big difference between a venison steak and straight ground venison, even from the same cut of meat. FDXX75

Yeah, I would have to agree, now that I noticed the frame is totally different as well. The camera had been moved at some point. FDXX75

I would have to agree with the pregnant part, but I doubt she is more than 2 yrs old. Very short legged, stocky body and she has a very short nose......................Does tend to get very long in the face as they mature. She is in very nice looking condition. FDXX75

Just curious, were all three of those pics taken on the same day??? I noticed the water level went up @ 2" in the last pic compared to the first two................................ FDXX75

That first 8 pt. walking the game trail was a nice looking deer, very healthy and clean. Nice footage, good luck this yr. FDXX75

I have a 4 man dome tent that I bought back in '83. I use it all the time, even though I have the camper................for a single nights stay over or a quick two nighter hunting trip. The most memorable trip was to Snowy Mtn. Peak, just south of Indian Lake. Last weekend of Oct. me and two buddies hiked in for a two day hunting trip........it started to rain @ 10 pm, I woke up at 5am with 10" of fresh snow on the ground. It was a real treat prying the tent loose from the frozen leafs the next day. LOL FDXX75

You can Google "homebrew trail cameras" and there are a bunch of on line instructions and lists of locations to purchase the supplies to make them, bottom line though. Parts and time cost more than purchasing one already built in some cases. FDXX75

Can I shoot a mole on my property?
FULLDRAWXX75 replied to RPIBuckHunter's topic in General Chit Chat
I could not find anything in DEC's rules/laws that stated it is illegal to remove moles. I did learn a few things about removal/trapping of nuisance animals/birds though. FDXX75 -
Wooly, Actually, your .02 would be .05 if they do away with the penny............................LOL. To answer your question, pennies are worth a lot more as scrap metal, but as mentioned above...............it is illegal to distroy US minted coins. FDXX75
