  1. Don't know if this property was private/public.............................someone else may have been in there snowshoeing, walking as you were and found the deer as well. Maybe returned with a saw and took the horns??? Hard to tell. FDXX75
  2. R446, Very cool pics and yes it is one of those moments you remember for life. Not to hijack your thread, but to add a little more to the subject matter.............................I have had many encounters with fawn deer besides the one I have mounted, @ 15 yrs ago we had a doe get hit by a car in the early spring, she was carrying triplets that were probably less than a day or two from being born. I grew up working on the family farms and saw my far share of fawns in the fields. Last May 6th, was a cold rainy Sunday morning and I was putting the dogs out to do their duties when I heard this blood curdling screaming noise coming from a small patch of woods between my house and the creek bottom. My house sets up on a hill and there is a rather steep bank the about 50-60 yds of dense brush/undergrowth before the creek snakes it way past, in the winter you can see the creek. but come april until the leaves drop it is a jungle down there.................Well, I knew exactly what that noise was..................baby deer screaming!!!!!! I ran over the bank to see what the heck was going on and found a very small (2-3 wk old) doe fawn laying in the tall ferns all bloodied up ..................I was sick to see it like that. She had multiple cuts and puncture wounds in the face and neck area with a large gash under her rt. frt. leg. I was able to get my son to bring down a large towel and I wrapped her and carried her to the house, cleaned her up a bit and called animal rescue. I drove 40 miles to the closest rescue/rehab shelter in my area. I got a call the next day the little girl had to be put down due to the severities of her injuries. The rehab person told me she had been attacked by a Fischer cat and that it is very common in the spring, the fischers near where the birthing areas are and will visit them looking for young fawns to kill and eat. I took a few pics of the fawn before we took her to the rehab center. FDXX75 PS: I would estimate the one in your pics to be at least 8+ wks old by the size and the way it is already taking flight to danger. Up until @ 6 wks, a fawn will just lay there attempting to hide, that is why so many fall prey to fischers and black bear in the spring. (the two largest killers of fawns)

    Why?

I really know if I remember exactly "when" the fascination began, all I know is it was early on in life ...................................It wasn't until I was @ 19 that I bought my first bow to hunt with, it was a used Jennings T star II compound. I shot the heck out of that bow, everynight at the range, 3D shoots, backyard hay bales. I took my first archery kill(doe) with that bow. I traded @ three yrs later for a new Golden Eagle, I regret that deal.......................The Eagle never really felt as comfortable as the Jennings and my shooting showed the results. I sold it to a kid at work and bought my first BowTech (don't regret that move) LOL Over the past 27 yrs. I suffered two major injuries that should have ended my abilities to shoot ever again, but my passion to be able to launch a pointed stick out of my bow and accurately place it into a 1" or less cirlce at 40 yds. keeps me going. For me it is relaxing, calming and very self challenging........................that is probably why I am also drawn to horseshoes, darts and golf. The challenge of throughing/hitting an object towards a target of distance with precise accuracy. I have passed on the torch as my 12 yr. son has taken up the sport with a vengence..............................LOL FDXX75
  4. Oh, I understand I will not have a shed hunting machine for this season. She is a very smart/quick learner and already loves to retrieve just about anything I tell her to fetch. She is also, a bundle of energy and I need something to get her involved in, something for her to focus on...........................LOL Thanks for the video FDXX75
  5. Oh the carnage..........................the poor guys never stood a chance. The guy in the 1st video should be arrested for haressment...........................................and bit in the process. FDXX75
  6. That was definately at a slaughter house/processors, where time is money. No care/concern for the hind or how many extra slash cuts are in the meat. It was done strickly for the camera, I am sure. And it wasn't his first time skinning a deer...................if he works at a processors, I bet he does a few doz. a night. FDXX75 PS: I agree with Dave, where's the hurry. Still cool to watch though.
  7. Can you post the video on here about training a shed dog??? I have a yr old Choc. lab that is itchin' for something to do.............................LOL. FDXX75
  8. Yep, Fresh killed, warm, ungutted deer. Facts: that deer didn't weigh 80lbs with guts, the hide is useless for to sell he had so many cuts in it, and where's the race anyhow???????????????? I average 35-45 mins to skin/quarter/prep for processing per deer. Quicker the deer is a fresh kill and warm, the hide will pull off with one hand when they are warm. I always precut the hide at the rear & frt. legs before hanging, makes it easier on the ground and much less time after it is hung. Unless I am going to mount the deer, I split the hide down the neck from brisket to chin and the entire hide peels in one piece all the way to the ears. AND A meat saw is a most. FDXX75 FDXX75
  9. I aquired a Skidder rim from a logger friend, cut a piece of steel mech grate to cover the center hub hole. Layed up paver blocks around the perimeter and topped with cap blocks to add that finished look. It is a good combination of diameter/depth to make a great sittin' around/cookin' fire or a roarin'/beer drinkin'/ horseshoe throwin' party fire............................ FDXX75
  10. I will have to get/post some pics of my mobile palace ............................LMAO I have a 1962 Layton, She is solid and in excellent shape for her age, here history that I know is the original owners sold it to a friend of mine back in 1992, we used it as a hunting camp for three yrs and he upgraded to a new camper and I bought the ole girl from him in 1995 for $500. The interior is all birch vaneer (walls, ceiling, cabinets) it sleeps 6 very comfortably, has a sink, 3 burner stove, refrig., furnace & gas/elec. lights. One drawback is it does not have a bathroom. (never bothered me much, one less thing to have to clean and winterize) Over the years I have set aside funds to do minor restoration/repairs to keep her in top shape. I did a new countertop with SS sink a few yrs back, last yr. was total frame scrape/sandblast and epoxy coat paint w/new rear bumper. This yr. will be a small panel replacement in the frt. (damaged by some low life while parked at our hunting location last yr., they shot the front up with a .22 cal) When I am done with the panel replacement she is getting a complete new paint job back to her original colors of white & mint green (old school) LOL FDXX75
  11. Looks like some nice stuff, a little pricey................but if it works I see they have youth BDU's on sale, I am going to p/u a pair or two for my son and see how it looks. If I like it, I may invest in a suit for myself. Thanks for the heads up, I had never seen this pattern/name brand before. FDXX75
  12. LOL, I know it's not your ad, but the part NIB -"extremely accurate"......................which is it?????? FDXX75
  13. I can one up that..........................I stopped at the local market in town tonight, bought 1/2 gal. milk and a lb. of ham for sandwiches.................................9.89 The girl at the register thought she was being funny and said she was going to call the police, I looked at her funny, she says to me.............well thats a steal. I looked at her and said I would by glad if she called, because I just got ROBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She didn't think that was funny. Almost 10 bucks for milk and lunch meat.........................holy crap. Pretty soon gas will cost as much as milk........................................think about that one. FDXX75
  14. I would like to start off by saying.........................Never, never exceed the recommended max. powder charge set my the manufacturer. Personally, I have never come close to the max. loads in any of my muzzleloaders(I own 6 now) Aside from my Salvage ML10II which uses smokeless powder, I average between 90 - 110 grs pending on the rifle/bullet combo I am using. In my T/C Omega, I currently use 3/30 gr pyrodex pellet with a 260 gr. t/c lead hollow point sabot. As soon as I use up the pellets, I am going back to loose powder. IMO, it burns better and I will be able to fine tune my loads better by adding/subtracting powder for the optimal load combo. There is such a thing as over charging a bullet and pushing it down range faster than it is capable of performing and getting horrible results....................max. loads don't always mean better killing power if the bullet doesn't work like it's supposed to. An other thing to look at is the rate of twist your barrel has and what style and weigh of bullet shoots best with that twist..................it can/will effect the accuracy of a bullet if not compatible. I would suggest starting at @ 90 grs of powder with a 300 gr. bullet and see how it shoots, increase the powder by 5 grs after a few shots and see if it effects the groupings (ex: tighter or opens up) if opening up, return back to the previous load charge as that is probably the sweet spot for that rifle/bullet combo. 15. Actually, there is a story that goes along with the rack. Last week I posted about shooting a deer and not being able to find it due to lack of blood trail/sign and heavy rain. I found him 3 wks later tucked in between a junk car and a 10,000 gal fuel tank that was on the edge of our property. The decay process had already started and the head and cape were badly damaged. I salvaged the antlers though. I have been considering taking to my taxidermist and having it mounted, using a donor cape. It would be a conversation piece for sure. FDXX75
  16. Every gun has it's own taste for ammo, my Remington 11-87 Premier (w/Hastings full rifled cantilevered barrel) absolutely loves the Brenneke Short Heavy Field Magnum slugs. I am going to try the Remmy Accutip's in one of my other slug guns, I am not pleased with the performance of the solid copper sabots. The Accutip''s have numerous high performance ratings, they appear to be a great set up. FDXX75
  17. Over the yrs. I have only found one complete set of sheds(nice 8pt) and maybe 3-4 single sides................................But, I have shot deer with some pretty freaky looking racks, here goes. FDXX75
  18. When I first started hunting I got a Buck 112 folding Ranger knife for Christmas, it was the smaller version of the famed Folding Hunter. I carried it for several yrs. until my younger brother bought me a Kershaw Antelope Hunter fixed blade knife. I have never carried anything but the that Kershaw since. IMO, it is the perfect combination of the all around hunters knife................great blade length & shape, rubberized non slip handle (even when covered in blood), high quality and maintains a great edge. I carry the Buck 112 in my hiking pack now a days. FDXX75
  19. It's not the cold & snow...............................the third deer back is upset because the second one just passed gas, as you can see she has turned her head to excuse herself. LMAO They look in really good shape FDXX75
  20. Whatcha do, make lude comments about his sister?????? LOL FDXX75
  21. Thanks, I tried it on my last post just to see if it made the difference. Yep, that's the ticket. Thanks again FDXX75
  22. Where do I go or what box do I check or uncheck to stop every one of my posts from being sent to my home email???? Dang FDXX75
  23. Ruger MKII .22 cal w/bull barrel It was my first pistol. FDXX75
  24. NYS itself has hundreds of vehicles their employees use that are CNG, the problem they run into is refueling locations and limited range due to the small tank capacities. The initial cost to get set up is huge. I know of a school district near Albany that converted 20 diesel engines over to CNG, after 10 yrs of driving them, they just broke even on their investment and needed start replacing tanks, valves, engines, etc. They felt it was not cost effective continue the program and switched back to diesel due to less maintainence.
