  1. Heave and fail? Come-on, NY state and the whole northeast for that matter has thousands of barns of all sizes that were built a hundred years before either of was born and will be here a hundred years after we're gone. These barns are built on ground level stone or concrete footings. This nonsense about monolithic slabs is $$$$outta your pocket and digging frost walls and 4 ft deep holes is ridiculous. We're not talking a house here, we're talking out buildings where you store tractors, lawn equipment, ATVs. I've built my own outbuildings for 40 yrs using 2x2ft wood framed concrete footings no deeper than a foot. Nothing has heaved or failed ever. I've never even had to jack and shim a single one. I've seen more 4 ft deep sonotube footings tilt in disturbed soil than I care to mention. Almost all of my buildings now have a slab of 6 or 8 inch's or so poured on the inside of my footings with a perimeter of drainage stone around the building and footings. If the guy was worried about town code then this whole conversation is a waste of time because he has to do what the town wants him to do which probably includes plans and a permit and a lifetime of increased property taxes.
  2. Screw it and dig down a foot or even a bit less, pour concrete and set a short cut piece of Sono Tube on top. Build on it and if over the years she heaves just jack and shim as needed. Better off not upsetting ground, just put your footings right on top and dig a bit to prevent lateral movement. Especially for a small building like your doing. What's the sense in digging to prevent winter heaves unless you going down 4 feet on every hole anyway.
  3. Any of you Island guys ever attend a Joe Defalco Deer hunting seminar in the Hempstead American Legion Hall back in the day?
  4. https://www.themeateater.com/hunt/whitetail-deer/american-deer-camps-a-dying-tradition I grew up in Long Island and headed out to my first Deer Camp hunt in 1972. We hunted for a full week, prepared and talked about it months ahead. Things sure have changed, but man the memories are something I will always value. Sure miss those days. Our crew consisted of blue collar Mechanics, Machinists, Cops and even a Lawyer.
  5. Imagine if the Dems were behind the Trump administration's response to fighting Covid from the start ? They fought operation Warp Speed from the get go, yet that's what saved millions of Americans and other lives around the world. Thankfully, they got the vaccine out to the public before the Biden administration could fire them. The only thing that got better under Biden during the worst days of the pandemic, was the Quality of the rug under his feet, while he was hiding in his basement. I think any attempt to make Trump's handling of this pandemic look like a success are pretty lame. The numbers prove otherwise and his long documented denials and downplaying the virus in the form of tweets was disastrous for America.
  6. Yep, I'm packing it in. Toughest season I can remember and I've been at this for 30 yrs. I actually bought the property I live on 14 yrs ago because of the abundance of turkeys in this area. Still had alot of fun being out there. I'm glad we still have our deer, their numbers go up and down but not nearly as volatile as the turkey population here in the last 7 or so yrs.
  7. Brutal. I'm scratching in places I didn't thing mosquitoes could even get too!
  8. Happened to me twice. I leave the zipper door open so they can poke their heads in.
  9. Let's see if this warm weather makes stuff happen. It's been a pretty cool season.
  10. Heartbreaking, been there myself. Don't like it
  11. Germany. Beer, Brats. People know how to live. Looking at Sept
  12. I learned recently that crows are one of the biggest problems for nesting turkey eggs. They wait for the hen to get up to feed and move in for an omelette
  13. I just went thru my very busy local hardware store and everyone is still wearing masks. Uncle Joe sounded the all clear days ago? What am I missing?
  14. Your an infectious disease control expert no doubt
  15. Yes Sir. They're on the move again. Had one going off and called him to 50 yards behind my blind. He shut up and moved along. Something spooked him.
  16. Working on a project in my shop/barn and had one gobbling mid afternoon. I'll be out in the dark tomorrow morning for sure. I'm getting desperate but this got me amped after a really slow season
  17. WTF are you talking about? Who said your going to need a vaccination card to go out in public. Your constantly stirring the political dung pot. And besides if you go to a place that requires you to show proof of vaccine why would you want to give them your business anyhow being the science denying anti vaxxer patriot you claim to be?? Relax and enjoy life son, everyone is not out to get you.
  18. Is stuff like this all you have to live for. Come on already lad
  19. Interesting to see for all the turmoil the working class of this country has been thru in the last couple years the stock market has been booming right on thru. Used to be when Americans suffered and the economy fell the markets would crash. Seems a certain people have become quite bulletproof
  20. Gotta be out there to meet up with a gobbler coming out of the henned up phase of the season. But I do agree that the local population in lower Ulster here is down this year. It's been up and down the last few years here. It's been a cold May to boot, a warming trend could make things better
  21. It's almost as if turkeys see movement at 40+ yards they spook and move on. I really think they put so much trust in their eyes that if something moves when they're within 15 yards they think, Ah can't be nothing to worry about, I would have spotted it way before I got here. Sounds crazy but I've had them spot me at twenty yards lifting my shotgun and they stop for a second and carry on.
