  1. Can you actually find this law that lists bows as "firearms"? I went looking for it the other day and I can't find it in the city penal code. I always thought it was illegal, but I can't find anything other than the states 500' rule on the actual books. I use Willowbrook Park to sight in my bow at 40+ yards, but as it was mentioned multiple times above, you need your own targets. There are currently no places on Staten Island that I know of that carry archery gear. The Dick's on SI is useless, and Outdoor Adventures closed a couple of years ago. If you are on SI and looking for a proshop that is a relatively short drive away, a new place in Woodbridge, NJ opened up this year. I believe it's called Woodbridge Arms and Archery.
  2. Edit: I realized what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the info Steve!

I just hope there is some god deer movement during the day. I've never hunted near that area, so I really don't know what to expect. The weather looks like it will be pretty good.

No, they rescheduled the scouting day to 10/19 and I had to do something for my kids that day so I couldn't get out there. I did some "google scouting", but that's about all I could do. I figure I'll go in blind the first day, but if I have no luck that morning, I'll scout/stalk the afternoon and hopefully find a good set up for the evening and the next day.

    Wertheim

Anyone going to be at Wertheim for the rescheduled hunt on 10/27-10/28?
  7. I was out all day on Sunday. I saw 9 deer on the road in the last mile before I got to the land I hunt, at about 5 AM. And not a single thing bigger than a squirrel moving in the woods during shooting hours.
  8. Strange color coat, doesn't look healthy.
  9. Actually, most of the "gurus" here point out that the one time in recent history that there was an actual cougar passing through NY, there was plenty of documented evidence (tracks, scat, fur, etc), not just eye witness accounts.
  10. ^----Possibly the funniest thing I have ever read on these forums.
  11. +1 on this... It all depends on your schedule. If you are lucky enough to live near where you can hunt, you have a lot more options than people who have very limited hunting days and long car rides.
  12. That sucks. One of my little guys has had breathing problems off and on throughout the years. Nothing is scarier than those hospital visits with your children suffering. Hope he recovers quickly.
  13. I'll be going up Sunday morning early. Weather looks like it will be good where I hunt.
  14. I could tell you where some monsters are in Richmond county, but that would just be tempting you to break the law.
  15. Digging up a months old argument post for a, "Nice Picture" comment.
  16. I love that mountain in the middle of the store. I remember the first time I went there and was completely blown away.
  17. My twins will be turning 14 next summer, so I've starting looking for deer guns for them for the Holidays so they have enough time to practice. I think I'm going with either a .270 or a .308. When I first started looking, I was checking out bolt actions, but then I came across the TC Encore Pro Hunter Platform. I know it's a single shot, but having the ability to buy turkey and MZ barrels instead of multiple guns sounds fantastic in the long run. Does anyone here have firsthand knowledge of the Encore and feel like sharing some advice?
  18. I got the call today too, jjb. They said if the Gov is back up and running before the 16th, it still might be on, if not, they will try to reschedule. You were going on the 18-19th? Which section? If they reschedule, it might actually work out better for me, I was unable to hunt the 19th, so I was only going for one day.
  19. ho·ly adjective \ˈhō-lē\ : connected to a god or a religion : religious and morally good —used in phrases that show surprise or excitement FYI, the actual definition. And for the record, if it isn't illegal, I'm all for shooting it.
  20. For the most part, there was no wind and the area is a low hunting pressure area. I think it was more along the lines of, she was too dumb/curious for her own good. Almost felt bad, but meat is meat, and after striking out last year and having very limited hunting opportunities, I wanted to make sure I brought something home.
  21. Yesterday, I finally got a morning to go hunting. I headed up to my hunting spot as early as I could manage (2 hour drive) and got there about a half hour before sunrise. I changed as quickly as I could and headed into the woods. I get about 50 feet from the tree I planned to climb when I heard something moving through the woods beyond my tree. I froze when I saw a doe walking by at about 40 yards. It was obvious that she had heard me, but she wasn't on full alert (seemed almost curious), and eventually went back to feeding. I quickly checked the time and realized that I had 10 minutes till I could shoot anything, so the waiting game began. Long story short, she stayed in the area a little too long. At a few minutes past 7, she wandered by me, giving me a perfect broadside shot at about 14 yards. She dropped within 50 feet of where the arrow hit her, and I had harvested my first deer of the season, all while carrying my gear and treestand.
  22. Hmmm...So, if the government is still shutdown next weekend, I'm assuming that Wertheim will be closed and I'll be screwed?
  23. I know a few also, myself included.
