  1. Looks like I'm going to get my first day in the woods tomorrow. Packing the truck when I get home tonight, then taking a little nap till about 3AM. Quick shower, and a two hour drive, and I'll be dressing and heading into the woods. Ahhh, the fun life of a city hunter.
  2. Newsroom is near or at the top of my list of favorite shows on TV.
  3. I hunt 3H, but haven't had a chance to get up there yet. What part do you hunt, John? I'm in the Mongaup Valley area.
  4. He had money to spend on expert witnesses, but not a lawyer? This story is terrible, but I have serious doubts about its authenticity.
  5. I was just going to say the same thing, your lawyer must have been terrible if you got convicted of a 1100' shotgun ricocheting round.
  6. At this point, it looks like I'm in the same boat as you. 10/18 seems like it will be my first day too.
  7. Last year I had a chipmunk running along a rock wall that was below my stand for an hour. The little guy finally busts me and instead of running away, he just stands on his back legs and barks at me....for almost 30 minutes straight. Now this happens as I'm trying to scare him away from 25' up. I finally broke off a piece of bark and threw it at him to get him to go away. I've never wanted to fire an arrow at a chipmunk so badly... And I feel your pain about little planes. One of the pieces of land I can hunt is directly below the approach run of a small airport. The planes fly by at 50-75 feet. It's terrible if you're looking for a peaceful time in the woods.
  8. Guessing a "misunderstanding" with the property owner? Anyway, glad you are getting them back!
  9. June through the beginning of November is my busy season. I average 60-65 hours a week, spiking as high as 90 on occasion. Try balancing that with a family, then adding to that trying to get practice / hunting time. Also, living in NYC, it can be difficult to find a place to shoot, even when I do get a moment to myself on a Sunday. That being said, I bought a brand new release last week, "dusted off" my bow that's probably been in its case since May, and put 30/30 into the kill zone of my target at 20 yards. Next Sunday I'll get out to the range (hopefully) and get some 30 yard practice in. I'll feel as confident as ever going into the field, even if I only get to shoot 2 or 3 more times before I get a chance to go hunting, which at this point looks around mid October. The main reason is, I don't take stupid shots. If the shot isn't right, I don't take it. It's that simple. The risk of wounding and losing a deer by trying a low percentage shot just isn't worth it to me. Would I love more free time to practice? Of course, I'd love more free time to do a lot of things, but sometimes you just have to play the best you can with the cards you're dealt.
  10. I ended up going with a Tru-Fire Hardcore Buckle Release Max Camo. I love the fold back, the easy adjustments, and open hook. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions and opinions.
  11. I did like it, but I'm just wondering, after 10 years, are there better products on the market. I was looking at the open hook "no look" releases and I'm wondering if I should upgrade to something like that.
  12. You have to fill out an application and an "open book" test, then mail it in. If you pass the test, you get put into a lottery.
  13. I lost on shotgun, but I won on archery for the 18th and 19th in Area 3. Does anyone have any experience there? I'm away the one day they allow scouting beforehand so I'm looking for any insights.
  14. One other question, as stated above, I've always had a single-caliper release. Is there any significant difference between single and a double caliper? Bowaholic - thanks for the suggestion, I've never seen a fold back release, I'm going to have to take a closer look.
  15. I've had the same release for almost 10 years now (Scott Little Goose), but the stitching and leather is finally showing enough wear to make me concerned. I want to pick up a new release in the next couple of days so I have enough time to practice with it before the season starts. Anyone have any suggestions? What's your favorite release?
  16. I can get pretty close to the deer in SI before they spook. I've had does pop out of thick brush 5 feet from me during gun season (but never when I've had a DMP...lol)
  17. Huge difference. I walked up to within 30 feet of two beautiful 8 pointers the other night, with my dog. The difference? Staten Island deer can't be hunted, and they know it.
  18. Doc, that was a very diplomatic way of stating exactly what I said in my first post on this thread.
  19. We don't have a difference of opinion. If there was such a ludicrous law on the books, I would be right there beside you saying how terrible it is. This was just an obvious ploy to sell a book by getting some BS claim posted in as many right wing fanatical websites as possible. People want to get worked up over the government so they look for any reason to get angry without doing the least little bit of fact checking for the actual truth. For the record, I did some research too and this was the closest thing I could find, and for it to be interpreted the way this woman claims it can be enforced, would never hold up in court: § 7-2501.01. Definitions ... (2) "Ammunition" means cartridge cases, shells, projectiles (including shot), primers, bullets (including restricted pistol bullets), propellant powder, or other devices or materials designed, redesigned, or intended for use in a firearm or destructive device. ... Now if you take the first 4 words of that and disregard all the rest, you can stretch it waaaaaay beyond its intended meaning, and stir up some sh*t.
  20. Or I have a better idea, show me the part in any one of those articles where they actually quote the section of DC penal code that says possession of empty shell casings is now illegal. Baaaaa!
