  1. Awesome Greene!!!! I can't wait, we found out about this last year by fishing Thompson's the day before. Kids are looking forward to it
  2. A true disaster on that set. And he thinks none of it is his fault. He is a POS.
  3. Holy smokes that's impressive!!! How old is she? Hopefully in the coming years she learns to appreciate your support.
  4. Hornady SST are great. Just was reading about the 220 the other day, sounds great!
  5. I have seen the same 5 does this year. Took one with my crossbow. A spike horn has come twice too. Still waiting for a buck to show up. The cameras by us show less deer than previous years, so I guess that's the trend I have been hearing from friends hunting in the capital district. I have been able to take deer both with and without using lures. Not sure if I could say using it has definitely made the difference , except for one buck a few years ago. He was hot for it and made it obvious.
  6. So maybe the way I use my scent wicks is my problem? I have used the same wicks on different weekends. I just store them in a zip lock bag and dip them in the lure every time I go out and hang them. Should I be using a fresh wick every weekend? They seem to smell the same to me all season. I have left them in the bag and smelled them over the summer, strong ammonia by that point. Rickards was from Cobleskill,NY. Just west of my town. I found some of his lure in my local gun shop. Dusty and not refrigerated....and the package still has his local Cobleskill address. So it must be old stock. I purchased a bottle of his "Buck lure" ( no Indian lure in the shop). It still smells like urine to me, not spoiled like ammonia. You guys ever use old stuff that hasn't been opened in the woods?
  7. I don't have an answer for your question. But I went with out scents this year. I thought me using them was diminishing my chances of seeing bucks. My southern zone 4h&g uses never brought in bucks. I tried drags and hanging wicks. Up north 5j I have had a buck come to my wicks. I always wanted to buy Rickards, support the small guy. Unfortunately I would buy my license and lure at Wally World....they don't carry Pete's.
  8. I just asked my friend Murphy Law, he thinks Jan 9th the deer will feel comfortable again. Seriously, that's awesome news. Why not use the blind to your advantage? Put it up somewhere on the property, and hunt elsewhere. Maybe you push them to your spot, and with the extra season, you might still have a good opportunity from the blind.
  9. I purchased a Baffin pair this year too. The Hunter model. Not impressed with them for warmth when I'm sitting. They were a bit better with a hand warmer down under my toes. I've tried multiple sock layers, wool ones, thick socks. Plus side, they are comfortable and I can walk quietly to my sits.

    4H

Spent two days in 4H, Dutch Settlement State Forest. Four does yesterday and one deer today. It was too far to tell, just a glimpse of its tail a it ran away from another hunter snapping his way into some cover. Seemed like less shooting for opening day too.
  11. Nothing fancy. Remington 770 in .308. Good Luck to everyone this season!!!
  12. I started with a 20gauge Mossberg 500. And still have it for the kids, and trap shooting. Picked it up used back in the day with a slug barrel. Purchased a used bird barrel for it and turkey choke. It goes out year round to hunt. I would consider a shotgun for them.
  13. When I need the light I use green. Mostly because it's the light that I have. I have had a doe walk through the light as I had probably bumped her from a bed. But she just walked away to thicker cover. I believe my footsteps did more damage than my light to move her. I picked up a climber over the summer, I was going to use the same headlamp on green to help me climb in the dark. I just planned on a much earlier start to let the woods calm down before shooting hour.
  14. Yup, 5J. He is near Edinburgh, remote wilderness.
  15. Awesome!!!!! About 838 weeks left for me!
  16. Good question, I'll have to ask him. I believe it's in 5J, so no wolves.
  17. He's guys, my buddies camp lease was logged a few years ago. And now he has at least 5 bull moose and cows walking all over the land. We seem to have less deer on the cameras, but plenty of moose. Just wondering if they will push the deer off the land or the deer have just moved away from the where the moose are most active. He did take a doe this Sunday, and we have 4 pictures of bucks on the cameras.
  18. Congrats....... before you know it you will be taking the girls in the woods with you. Cheers to future hunting memories!
  19. That's a shame to lose more woods to condos!!! I drive through the pine bush (on rt20) every day to and home from work, We don't need any more developments around here. I've heard stories of some great deer in there. I have faith in you grampy! If you need help pulling him out, send me a PM.
  20. So what's the plan when your battery dies on the highway? You no longer can bring a generator out to charge it up? Lol, they won't get rid of the combustion engine.
  21. The Haitians are probably upset they're in line behind the Afghans.
  22. I think I saw her at Stewart's today!
  23. I will pick from the firearms that currently own. Mossberg 500, 20 gauge. Multiple barrels and chokes for it. My first hunting weapon. And great for my whole family to use. But, If that law was coming in effect, I would probably end up being the outlaw. And keep more of my firearms!
  24. Its part of the tradition to process your own game. I started out paying to have my first buck butchered, but wasn't happy with the amount of meat I picked up from him. The next year my friend was taught on his deer from an older guy that hunts the same farm. And my friend helped me with my next deer. Now we have a great time processing them. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it yet. I have even hit 2 deer with my truck and took them home to pull some good meat off of them. Vacuum sealing and grinding, makes for some long nights after work!! I don't use any plastic or butcher paper. Just rinse the meat, pat it dry ,and seal it up. Sounds like we need another lesson on how to prepare the meat for the freezer. I thought it lasted pretty well my way.
