What do you think of LI now that you bagged 2 in one day? PS Nice buck!

Good luck everyone, stay safe! Hoping for some warm weather for our deer!!! Events like this and the harsh winters we have are one reason I idolize the great Whitetail. They are true survivors!!!

Congrats!

A Deers Home Range Deer home ranges are highly variable and are affected by a number of factors, including: habitat, herd density, geographic region, habitat diversity, etc. Plus, there is a lot of confusion concerning the difference between an "annual" home range and "seasonal" home range. A deer's annual home range (the area it covers in an entire year) can be quite large, yet it's seasonal home range (the area the deer covers during a particular season of the year) can be amazingly small. Deer basically have a "range" just large enough to meet all of their needs. Traveling long distances is bad for survival (burns excess energy and increases exposure to predators). If they can meet all of their needs in a very small area, they will do so. That is why -as habitat managers - we work hard to create highly diverse habitat, especially when working on small managed properties. If the habitat is diverse, the deer will travel less and they will spend the majority of their time on the small property. When the habitat is highly diverse, we've seen individual deer have summer ranges of as little as 20-30 acres, simply because they didn't need to travel any further. However, in large, homogeneous habitat areas, such as thousands of acres of similar age hardwoods, deer may need to travel great distances to meet their needs. Pasted, I added huntingny.com to the compatibility view settings. IE 11 Win 8 Tools, compatibility view settings, add huntingny.com Switching BBcode mode worked for me too. Only allows pasting through the clipboard icon on the tool bar, unable to right click to past.

If your having issues pasting your computer probably upgraded to IE 11. Use google crome or firefox or uninstall IE 11...

Talk about hijacking a post DAM! Hope he sticks to his guns!!! Just like Bubba!

WOW Happy I don't watch TV! And people wonder why I ban talk about politics and religion at camp lol. 5 pages in one day, dam. Arguing about politics and religion on the internet is like trying to eat that apple on my phone, it just don't work! Freedom of speech, plain and simple to me. Nice to see him stick to his guns. He has nothing to loose and could care less. I would be in the same boat if I was able to make that kind of money...

Done. I have nothing against gay people but I do when they try to end freedom of expression and free speech. He is allowed to have his own opinion even if it does not match public perception. They asked him what he thought, now they don't like it! Funny

Season is still on until dec 31st, GETSOME! Jan shotgun/muzzleloader for those who signed up.

Going to hunt this weekend and the 26th -31st. I love the last few days. Few hunters and deer are not as spooked, great time. Good luck!

I think the brightness with snow makes it hard for them so see, add white camo and it's amazing. Agree 100%!

3,000 deer on LI in federal sharpshooters' sights this winter
NFA-ADK replied to the blur's topic in Deer Hunting
Steve863 it sounds like you think this is a great idea. No other solution? Bow hunters on LI have taken out more than 6000 deer this year alone. Stats still not finished, more to come. This is not enough? They want these deer removed, not culled. Not sure where you live but I live and hunt LI and have many friend who do. These guys are pissed they only shot 7-9 deer so far and usually shoot many more, not sure how many they have to shoot to be considered lazy, let me know. To say that bow hunters can not control this issue is simply wrong. We can and have done this for years. If they want more taken then they should be exposed to the reality of it. ALLOW BOW HUNTING in more areas! This sounds funny coming from a guy who says everyone has to butcher their own deer or should not hunt. Coming to a WMU area near you. This is just a start. Next they will say it worked and want to use it in a area you hunt to "control" the population. The population on LI is ok. People get upset because they have to pay for killing one every few years when they run them over. You seem to want Gov. to control your life and deer, no thanks for me. This is a terrible idea and should not be allowed. Steve863 I hope they come to your town next and take control of your herd. -
I base my personal success on how well I hunted, deer sightings, deer passed and knowledge gained. Success is also based on other game, coyotes, eagles, hawks, turkey, bear, fox, bobcat, moose and weasels of all types make my days afield more memorable and are a big part of my enjoyment. One of my big issues with hunting is staying healthy enough to hunt. I feel blessed every time I step in the woods and make sure I thank GOD every time. If I am in the woods and healthy I am happy, everything else is just details. While taking a buck is the ultimate goal for me, just being afield and seeing deer equals success especially if I can go undetected. The more I can go undetected the higher I consider my success. A good season is when I go afield often, don't get shot at and see deer. A great season is when I can put everything together and get a buck. A pathetically crazy season is bagging a buck my first day and ending that season. Lucky for me bow is another season so I can quench my thirst for the hunt.

3,000 deer on LI in federal sharpshooters' sights this winter
NFA-ADK replied to the blur's topic in Deer Hunting
Paying snipers to cull deer is a horrible idea, the deer will not all be processed. This would be a burden on the tax payers for something that can be done for free and is not a good long term solution. Bow hunting in rural area's has been proven effective, cost efficient and economically profitable for the community. Bow hunting is the best solution. Deer are not the only animals with ticks, mice are a huge factor. HUGE! Wonder how the snipers will do with them. Next is fox, turkey, geese, squirrels, cats and dogs. Sounds like the overpopulation is on the human side. Funny how when more people move out east the more deer they want killed. Killing 3000 deer will not fix the lyme disease problems. They don't want them culled they want them removed thinking no lyme ticks will survive. You think those snipers are going to pick up 3000 deer, yea right. They will not donate the meat, great fix. So much for encouraging hunting, better to encourage poaching at night with bait, spotlights and snipers with silencers. All the stuff no one is allowed to do on LI. But wait we need to kill some deer so lets just allow it? Wonder what the charges would be: Baiting, spotlighting, shooting from the back of a truck, lol OMG, shooting at night, night vision goggles, silencer and a 30 round clip and it looks like life. Where is the judge I need a ruling! Opening up more area's to bow hunters and the general public would allow for more deer to be taken and the best economically viable long term solution. Deer taken would help, taxidermy, dinners, deli, gas stations etc. all helping the economy and utilizing the animal. Snipers baiting is horrible and I am shocked so many here see this as a viable solution. How would you like it if this was your hunting area and 3000 extra doe where slaughtered? To compare this majestic beast with a rat is unimaginable to me. But I see deer in a much brighter light than many, shame they can not see the survivors that whitetail deer are. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, shame so many see so little value in the life of this majestic beast. Shame on any town that treats this animal with such distain. -
I would have to pass, lol not because I would not want him but because I probably could not hold the sights on him from all the shaking! WOW nice! Yea I would have problems sleeping if I knew that was in the woods I hunt. DAM Shame you could not connect on him this year, doubt if he is 8 that he will have the same mass next year. How about if we just think he is 5 and next year he will be even larger!!! Yea thats the ticket! I always thought about a house up North but pics like this make me think "Go West Young Man!".

Passed a 4pt on Tuesday the 3rd. Saw 12 deer on Friday 6th mostly doe. Two doe on Friday.

Impressive LiveToHunt! That's ok it took me 13 years to get my first and another 10 years in between for my second ADK buck. Just finding a buck track in these remote area's can be a task. Some painful lessons learned over those years! The area I took my 3rd this year had no tracks in the snow when my friends when 2 weeks later. Last year I found 1 large big buck track in 9 days with about 5 days of snow and many miles covered with vehicle and on foot. Depending on where you hunt the population can vary greatly, increase your odds by hunting populated areas. Several doe herds of 4 or more is ideal. Towns, golf courses, farms and other manicured type area's offer great habitat deer love and usually have higher populations. Deep woods offer many things but high deer population is usually not one of them from what I have seen and documented. One thing about going out for lunch is this: If you go in a mile you hike out a mile for lunch then do it all over again. 4 miles with 2 hiking miles to get in and out, more time for deer to see, hear or smell you. If you pack a lunch you can cover a 3 mile circle for the day with much better results and stealth. None of my bucks where taken at first or last light 10am-3:30pm. I will not come out of the woods for lunch I am usually too far back and would disturb the woods too much. In so far as time and dumb luck. Try to increase your odds. If it is warm or conditions exist for bad wind or low deer movement then do not hunt. The less you disturb the area and the less they see you the better your odds of seeing them during the day. (Sometimes hunting harder means hunting less.)Deer are nocturnal but that is the beauty of the rut, they can move at any time and will. They have to eat and want DOE!!! Proper barometric presser, just before storm fronts and after storms deer will move more often. Find where they bed and feed and try to catch them in this transition zone, choke points, valleys with steep cliffs and other land features offer good area's to target. Above all hunt bad weather as often as possible, its fun when prepped and offers great cover for staking both visual and audio. High winds above 15-20 mph make deer bed from what I understand. To much tree and branch movement for them to identify predators. If you are only seeing them at dusk or dawn you are probably close to their bedding areas. Find where they come in and out of these areas if possible to set up an early morning or late evening ambush. Find several groups of doe to pattern. Doe offer you the best decoy and scent, rutting bucks can not resist. Snow offers trails, crossings, bedding and other valuable information. Document every time out for future reference. Deer in new area's will follow old patterns of other deer, not exactly but enough where it is worth documenting every encounter. Go with your instinct, intuition, knowledge of prey and lay of the land. Good luck, hope some of this helps.

Who hunts the late Archery and has been successfull?
NFA-ADK replied to ApexerER's topic in Bow Hunting
Successful yes, harvest, no. I have not hunted that many days with the bow 7 or so late season. Last Friday I saw 12 deer and had an easy shot on 2 doe. Passed a 4 point on Tuesday before that. Late season is great if you are dressed properly. This is the second rut! Just wish I could hunt this week instead of the weekend only! -
Not the biggest boy in the woods but glad I got him

Very nice! -
That is one pissed off animal!

Simply put that age class is very young and inexperienced no matter what size the rack spike to basket 8 included. They tend to throw caution to the wind and let hormones and instinct to mate take over. This lack of self preservation gets them into trouble. Older deer tend to be more wary and smarter. In so far as an accomplishment it depends on the hunters level and expectation. If it was the hunters first deer that is a great accomplishment and a perfect start! Hunting is what you want it to be. If getting any deer is good enough for that person then its great! To each his own I say. One of my hunting partners will shoot anything and I will congratulate him if he gets a spike, doe or big buck. I pass many deer but do not expect this of my hunting partners as some are meat hunters... Be happy with your harvest you are more successful that many. Everyone starts somewhere and if a spike is your first buck be proud.

Under Armor, Polypropylene, fleece, base layered. Parker, pants and full insulated Gore-Tex suit with removable hood, neck warmer, balaclava, extra sweat suit and fleece pull over in back pack. Colder it is the more layers I put on. Glove liners and good gloves. Good sock liners and socks with proper boots for season, temperature and type of hunt. Hand and toe warmers work but I don't use them much. New suits or bibs with layered jackets are pretty good but expensive. I try to hike a slow pace to keep from overheating, I unzip and keep head and neck exposed. I use hunter cleaning wipes to clean my feet and expose them to the cold air before applying deodorant to keep them dry, this allows me to start off with cold feet and prevent sweating temporarily.
