So even the elected officials know their is no issue with population, it is a issue with access and now they are starting to allow us access to these places? And now they say the population is ok? Go figure how all of a sudden when the cull is not allowed the population is NOW OK? What happened to those 3000 deer that had to be culled? Did some one over estimate the population or are they just coming to the realization the bow hunters can do the job now that snipers can not? Again do not believe everything these new media like to spit out. And no this is not a conspiracy lmao. Nice conclusion! So now all of a sudden bow hunters have been controlling the population and we have enough of them? Funny how this cull was only brought up when the season was almost over. Bet you think that was a coincidence too... Like I said what until one of your politicians figures he should control your population and lets see how you like 3000 doe taken out of it!!! Again I am shocked so many here support such a bad idea. But I guess some only think about themselves... , if it does not affect me so what right? Wrong it does affect you by allowing such stupidity to take place... Bow hunters are the best way to keep suburban population under control and as a hunter you should know this fact.

You obviously do care, or you would not say I am not helping... Those 2 doe I would have harvested would have really made the difference that's for sure! And I understand you care about nothing but you. Just don't believe all the media you read. And don't be so gullible to think this will never happen where you hunt. Caumsett park is not open to hunting for the public. But is controlled by bow hunters. You will not find this info on the internet.

My first year hunting a buck busted out of the bush next to the trail making that grunt noise like it was hit and snapping ever branch in his escape. He knew we were danger that's for sure! Grouse can be scary but this noise and following commotion was from a 200 pound animal and you knew it. I was just happy it was going away from us as we both took defensive postures. This locomotive was not stopping for anything including any poor sapling or branches in his way and you heard his escape for over 100 yards, impressive to say the least.

Come on guys, lets stop the I am better than you because you don't hunt like me attitude. Hunting from a blind, tree stand, or the ground are all ways to hunt. So is targeting big bucks, doe and even fawns. Each method has advantages and disadvantages does not make one way wrong or unethical. In the heat of the moment it is easy to make a bad judgment on a shot especially after the excitement of dropping a deer 2 seconds earlier. Don't be so critical of your fellow hunter. And if you are.... I would love to see the video next year of you killing one deer in less then 45 seconds. Give me a brake. If you think every deer dies within a minute you have not hunted very long. Reality check!!! We might not like watching that deer "suffer" for those 20 or so seconds but guess what, that is part of deer hunting. I think Steve863 Nailed it. " It would be nice if they all just gently lied down and rolled over dead without a twitch, but that's not how it always happens. Anyone who has hunted long enough realizes this."

Great post. So true Phade! One thing I can say for sure is my mistakes made me learn the hard way. Shoot often and become as good as you possibly can with your weapon. He took down 4 deer in less than a min. While this is not going in my favorite list I see nothing wrong here. While his second shot was bad, his 3 other deer basically dropped... One follow up shot is not bad on 4 deer IMO. I do not see anything wrong with his ethics or shooting. Population control is more than likely why he did this and probably has more doe tags to fill. If he uses the meat I have no issues with his ethics. Remember it takes a few seconds for all the deer to stop moving so he can figure out which needs a follow up shot. Not something we are use to but if its legal so be it. Remember perspective! We have many fellow hunters in other states that can do many things that are illegal here in NY. Baiting, shooting multiple deer, using dogs are some of the thing we can not do but other states allow. We often get on our high moral horse and say bad to others for stuff we are not allowed to do, don't fall into this rut we are all brothers and should support each other as much as possible. We fight with each other often enough over many things, this doe harvest should not be one of them. I see no moral or ethical code broken here as this state probably has a high population and is allowing hunters to control it.

Not new, they have been doing this in Caumsett for years... Now they use bow hunters... Works great!!! Lesson learned, NOT, lol...

1)They could have someone interview the home owner applicants during sign up and address any of their concerns. If they really want deer culled then they should allow bow hunters. 2)Worst case scenario they can have home owners choose from a list of hunters and have the option of removing one if they did not fit their view of what a hunter should LOOK like. I have meet many hunters too and have the opposite thinking on them. The hunters I know are well respected individuals and I would allow them on my property and in my house. Otherwise they shouldn't judge a book by it's cover as so many like to do! Even here I get that, unreal... Expected though... Its the internet... 3)Base the hunter on his actions and success if he falters then remove him from the list or put his name on the bottom depending on circumstances. If he passes deer remove him. And actions that upset the home owner will result in removal of the area and possibly the program depending on actions performed. Reward successful hunters by putting them in area's that need population control the most. Not very hard to figure out how to do this... Your point of view is echoed by many east end home owners. They do not want us low life hunters in there town. Hence lets do a cull. Funny to me how hunters blame other hunters for not controlling the population when the real issue is access to the area's that need control. I think it's funny that these same hunters believe the hype that too many deer are on LI when they do not hunt these areas. Do we need control of the herd? Yes. Will setting up baiting stations on farms and public land help in rural areas? NO If you think these snipers are actually going to do this shooting in residential areas, well again you are just kidding yourself. But this will eliminate deer from public lands for a few years until population on residential area force them out again. Then we can do the sniper shooting again??? Do you see my point? Bow hunting is the best long term solution that saves tax payers money.

The problem I have is that this is not a viable solution and you two seem to support it out of spite just because it will not affect you, yet. You think Suffolk county is the only area this will happen? Yes? Then you both are kidding yourselves. Albany and Ithaca will be next with Nassau soon to follow, will you object when they finally get to your town? It that what it will take? You both seem to think we are overrun with deer, WE ARE NOT. They just want more eliminated thinking this will stop lyme. Wake up and stop believing the media, they are lying, we have no population issues except on the human side... Do you really think that we need to cull 3000 more doe, if so again you are just believing the media. Please don't be so gullible! We do not have an overabundance of deer, they just want you to think that way to allow this cull to happen. Be realistic. We don't have a population issue with deer. In so far as how I hunt, it is what it is. I will not change my hunting ways to cull the population, being familiar with hunters on LI I know we have enough to keep the population under control if allowed. (This is only my second year hunting LI so in reality I have NOTHING to do with population control...) You seem to want to blame the population control on me and how I hunt. Well just so you know we have thousands of hunters on LI and most of them do not hunt like me and would be happy to take any deer. PS: If they want the population controlled they will allow more bow hunters access and allow more than just local hunters. Open the public parks, lower the shooting limit to 150ft and get homeowners to sign up for a volunteer bow hunting program that allows us access and we will get it done. Frankly, as you two seem to like killing doe, I am so shocked that you approve of this plan. I would bet my house if your town suddenly said they need population control and the herd was too large you would not be so willing to have your herd culled. Think about it! One day your town says we have an extra 30,000 dollar grant and want to use it to control the deer herd. Because we think more need to be killed. Again, you see this as herd control because bow hunters and not doing their job? I see this as a ploy to allow a grant to be spent and try to prevent lyme from spreading. Don't believe everything the newspapers and media want you to believe. Bow hunters can and have controlled the population just like in your area's we can do much more if allowed. I understand you two do not like me or the way I hunt, don't let this cloud your judgment on what is right. Bow hunting is the best way to control population in urban environments.

So much for supporting our troops. WT heck! I say take away the medical benefits to our elected officials and give it to the solders and let the officials go on Obama care. Easy way to get people to join, force them by taking away health benefits so they are forced to use Obama care. Score one for Obama. Long Eddy NY. Many, many years ago... A few family friends had gone up hunting. They where out the first day on the land and 2 of them where going to hunt this mountain top together. One on one side of the mountain the other took the back side. After a few hours of sitting uncle Joe fell asleep. Suddenly awoken from his slumber he could hear a noise that woke him, it was my other uncle snoring on the other side of the mountain! After a unsuccessful hunt they headed back to the cabin. After 3 hours in the woods they came to the conclusion that they where lost. Seeing a light in a cabin they made their way over to it and knocked on the door hoping someone was home and could direct them back or possible give a ride. After a few knocks on the door my other uncle John opened the door and let them in, it was the cabin they where staying in!!! To say they where not woods wise would be an understatement, but it makes for funny stories that's for sure!

We not only have the people willing and able to do it, they will actually pay for this privilege. But yea sure go encourage culling? Not me sorry I see this as a politically motivated tool to spend tax payers money. Pathetic use of tax payers money when it can be done with bow hunters. Sorry but I will never agree will THIS type of culling when the proper tools are at the towns disposal. Again some of you seem to like GOV control over your lives, I think they have done enough damage, I would hate to see NY deer suffer at their hands. They are not deer biologist and probably never consult one for proper balance so there views are twisted by the few uneducated in there deer management program which probably does not exist. Bow hunters killed over 6000 deer on LI, what is the goal? 9,000, 20,000? Make more room for more houses, no deer in those woods, OK to cut them down and put up a house? Now if we see a deer it should be culled. How about a small farm, with a 10 foot fence. How about we make it a park for deer, NO HUNTING. Again bow hunters are not the issue, we kill many deer, want more remove, give us access to those area's where you are having issues! Let me know where you hunt Steve and I will promise to talk to the sniper advocates and get them over to your area next. Sure you will encourage this where you hunt to keep the population in control because you are just not doing enough no matter how many you kill and you understand how important it is.
