As I drove up the hill on this brisk November Saturday, I thought about what my wife Terri said “you can stay till Wednesday”. Turning into the drive way of the camp, I stopped when reach the trailer that would be my home for the next five days. As I unlocked the door I looked at the thermometer it read 30 degrease. When I walked in I thought it colder in here then outside, I turn on the heat and finished unloading the car. I got back into the car and started down the rut filled road to where I would park for the day. After I parked I removed my bow from the case and ready it along with my pack and tree stand. 5am about two hours before sun rise. I started walking down to the trail I would take into the woods, when I reached the trail; looking into the dark abyss I turn on my flash light. The light pushed away the darkness, reflecting off the frost giving off eerie glow. Thinking of the gnomes and fairies that inhabited the forest of my childhood as I walked, the sound of the trees above me exploding with a flock of turkeys shook me back to adulthood. Reaching the tree I would be hunting from. I attached my bow to the pull up rope and removed my pack and tree stand. Seeing hints of orange above the hill on the other side of the valley, I went to work. Hanging the stand in the tree then putting on my safety harness and attaching it to the tree. I pulled up my bow hung it on the hook I sat waiting for sun rise. The woods started to come alive the birds started singing. Hearing movement; I turned to see what could be making the noise, it’s a squirrel. Thinking it’s early for him to be out scurrying around, I sat there watching him. Then on silent wings an owl talons out stretched snatched up the squirrel. Flew to a nearby tree and consumed all but the tail, in less than five minutes. The events that just accrued made me realize that Mother Nature is not kind but can be quite cruel. You are ether the hunter or the hunted, there is no middle ground. Glancing down at my watch I needed to finish getting ready; taking my bow off the hook I knocked an arrow and place the release on the string. Looking down the hill, I spot three deer feeding on acorns as they move up the old logging road that passes my sand at 20 yards. Thinking (now that’s a mistake) this could be over soon I ready for the shot. If the deer kept to the logging road, they will pass by a tree; when the first deer a doe got to the tree. Her head went behind the tree; I drew my bow back and settled the 20 yard pin where she would step out. As she came out from behind the tree she turned her head and looked back over her shoulder. Turning my head I could see another deer coming up the logging road. A buck and a big one, it took about a second to decide to let the doe walk pass. Hoping the three does would lead the buck pass me. That didn’t happen all four deer went off the logging road and down the gulley. Turning to sit down I see another deer, already in side 20 yards to my right. Coming straight at the stand the deer stopped right under my stand. I started to laugh the deer looked up at me stomped its front feet, and took off like being shot out of a cannon. Sitting and thinking of the owl from this morning; weather you believe in creation or evolution. You can’t be anything but amazed and how well built the owl is a perfect hunter. At about 9:00 I hear what sounds like someone fooling around with a deer call or maybe it could be Bigfoot. Just then a doe goes running pass with three bucks chasing her. All I can think about is a bar in a one girl town. Its last call and they all want to go home with her. Seeing another buck coming up the hill to my right, I blow on my grunt call the buck starts coming in my direction. Reading my bow I wait for him to come into range. He comes in range drawing the string back I settle the 20 yard pin behind his shoulder. Making a blat noise stops the buck at 10 yards. I send the arrow on its way, seeing the arrow striking the deer behind the shoulder. I now this will be over in less than 10 seconds. The deer doesn’t run it walk away and goes fifty yards and lays down it’s over. I clime down and find my arrow stuck in the ground covered in blood. Even though I can see the deer on the ground I always follow the blood trail. When I reach the deer sadness comes over me, as I kneel to pay to god for letting me take this deer. Also paying to the god of hunters Orin thanking him for letting my shot be true.

I would ask how many doe’s and how many were antlerless were there; remember up to 2/3’s could be fawn’s. If they are all doe’s I’m going to ask then where are the fawns. Next I would ask could you have seen some of them more than one time with a few of you hunting

I think things are fine they way they are now. But I would like a youth hunt the 1st weekend in October with mandatory blazed orange the next weekend bow opens. The last thing I would like in the southern zone is the late bow ML season to run though the first Sunday after Jan. 1st. This is just to address a couple of post. This year the DEC cut DMP’s in most WMU’s this would indicate that there is not a over abundance of doe’s in most WMU’s; also 70% of the WMU are at or below desired levels with 41% at below desired levels. (2009 deer harvest report page 13) the first think someone is going to say is that’s the buck take objective. The buck take objective is one of the prime factors use to determine the adult doe take

First this thread is on AR’s until guys like you hi-jacked it to state what you think deer hunting should be in this state according to you. And to beat up on others who don’t agree with you. All I was stating was is that we need to be aware of what’s going to happen Jan 1st it was not a statement for or against AR’s.

Maybe instead of worrying about AR’s we may want to think about what the new governor has in mind for the DEC. Remember he will most likely replace the heads of all regional offices and he will pick the new head of the DEC. chances are they are not going to be outdoors people

Hey Doc this guy is the type person that will with very little knowledge tries to come off as an expert. It is obvious he has never taken a basic biology class or he missed the part where females have babies of both sexes; and in this case he thinks the more doe’s you kill the more bucks you will have. You and I both know you have to kill doe’s to control the overall population, over killing of doe’s would be detrimental to both bucks and doe’s. I think he doesn’t understand the difference between doe’s and antlerless that up to 2/3’s of the antlerless population is fawns.

Ok back to topic; this proposal states that it’s a Natural Proposal for Herd Management. This a misnomer anything we do to the deer herd except leave it alone is a manipulation on our part there is nothing natural about.

so with the bucks you have seen and the ones on trail cam. you have a 1to 3 ratio which is what I said the ratio is where hunting takes place

I have some good contacts at the DEC in regions 8 & 9 and none of them have ever said anything about a year or more of doe only hunting. In some WMU’s they would like to see the opposite.

I’m going to explain the logic it’s not logic it’s just what would happen. Right now the deer harvest is spread over both sexes and all age classes. In 2009 the buck take was 102,057 the antlerless take was 120,741. Your plan would remove the buck take for 3 years so hunter would be issued only antlerless tags and hunter will kill as many doe’s and fawns they can. The only thing that would happen is the deer herd would be damage to the existent that I would take years to repair. All because some people believe the buck to doe ratio is out of whack. There is no such thing as a 10 or 15 to 1 ratio where hunting takes place. Those who spout the BS are full of crap if it were that many doe’s then why the DMP’s cut were. Most who say there are too many don’t know the difference between doe’s and antlerless

Think about this only hunting doe’s for 3 years with over 550,000 deer hunters. Here’s what would happen to the deer population. The first hunting season we would kill over 150000 to 200000 antlerless deer this would include button bucks. In the spring you will see fewer fawns. The next season you will start to see more fawns then doe’s in the harvest. You start to see more bucks laying dead on the side of the road as they will have to travel farther to find doe’s. If there is a savvier winter you will see more bucks die do to the stress of the rut. In the spring there would be even fewer fawns. The 3rd season the harvest would be primarily fawns. Now the buck hunt we will kill somewhere between 100000 to 150000 bucks and some big ones. What we have done is damage the deer so bad it will take 10 years or more to recover and it may never recover fully. We also cut the number of hunters by 40%. I guess PETA was right we will destroy hunting are selves. PS read the new deer & deerhunting

If you want to see bigger bucks all you need to do is keep the deer population at about 80% of capacity and keep the buck to doe ratio at about 3 or 4 doe’s to every buck and you don’t have to let every small buck walk just most of them. Also some habitat improvement helps. It is that simple. And you don’t need AR’s. One more thing remember Bio. 101 a over abundance of males is detrimental to specie survival .most wmu's are at or below capacity.The 1 to 1 buck to doe ratio is a myth.

That’s BS someone who is unsafe will always be unsafe AR’s won’t change Behavior. Fawns are off the teat by the August if there not they won’t make it through the winter. Is it ok to shoot doe fawns if it’s not isn’t that hypocritical if it’s ok to shoot 1.5 year old doe why is not ok to shoot a .5 year old. You’ll still see more bucks because you killed a doe. Isn’t that what’s suppose to happen kill doe’s see more bucks? Isn’t that what this group is saying? Maybe things have change since I took Bio 101 kill females and you reduce the entire population. That may have changed the NEW SIENCE kill females get more males I do not know?

You have to read the law it gives the DEC the option to have a 1 week cross bow season in the southern zone after the late bow – ML season the key word is option

I shoot out to 40 and have killed every deer i have shot at 40 but i can count on 1 hand how many times in 35 years i have shot that far my last deer i shot was at less then 20 feet

What it looks like we will see as rule changes is the bow season opening earlier a late x-bow season after the southern zone ML season and a loosening of the distance requirement for bow from 500ft to 250ft. Here is something will the NYBH demand that they should be able to hunt in the x-bow season?
