  1. I hear a lot of folks talking Under Armor . It it that much better than Rocky , Bolumbia , Nike , etc for wicking away moisture to keep you warm and dry ? I could care less if it's camo because I would be wearing it under other clothing . Someone mentioned in another thread that the UA smelled after a while and the Rocky didn't ............
  2. At 70 , i'm not gonna drag a deer any farther than I have to . I worked too hard for many years and saved up money to retire . It makes little sense to go without and leave it all to relatives . An ATV is handy for many jobs ( dragging downed trees , pulling out shrubs , etc ) .
  3. I think I would have a talk with him and let him know that in the future he's on his own and you feel uncomfortable partaking in his illegal actions .
  4. My father in law got me started with deer hunting . He introduced me to an old friend of his from Leicester , NY . He asked him to show me his scars . Apparently he had shot a buck and knocked it down . He straddled the deer to cut it throat . The deer kicked like heck and the man required over 60 stitches . My father in law said ," Ed , don't ever slit a deer's throat . If you knock one down , get to it quick and put another slug in his neck ."
  5. I would say your father in law is an ass for having you drive 5 hours round trip to cover something he did illegally and making you an accessory !
  6. I used to do that and about 20 years ago I got smarter and cut an 8" piece of 3/4" diameter PVC pipe and attached that to the pull rope so the rope wouldn't cut into my hand . Then I got even more smarter and started using a heavy duty sled . The sled worked great so that any blood that drained would go in the sled . It also made it easier to load the deer into a p/u or a trailer .
  7. Went to my SIL's yesterday am and helped her put a PU truckload of hay in her barn and then hraded for Groveland . Expected to be in the stand by 2 pm but it turned out to be 3pm . Wasn't seeing anything but at close to 4:30 I heard a loud shot from someones back yard about 500 yards away and saw 4 deer hauling . Didn't see anything near me . Got down , went to the house and got out some old photo albums to take home and scan . Got to bed just after 8 pm and back up at 4 am . Had coffee and oatmeal and headed for Geneseo . I was in a stand in the woods by 5:45 and didn't see a thing all morning . Heard sporadic shots in various directions . Helped the SIL unload another PU truck of hay in the barn . Went to a spot and set up a ground blind overlooking a pasture , winter wheat field and lane . Sat down at 1 pm . Didn't see a thing until 3:30 . A doe about 400 yards down the field . She seemed pretty relaxed . Around 4:15 I got out of the blind to trim a few branches . When i started to get my gear I saw a small buck a little over 100 yards away in the lower pasture lot . I didn't attempt to shoot because the 2 horses were down there and the 3 were too close together . Gotta let my back recuperate for a couple days !
  8. If members updated their profiles you wouldn't have to ask how old anyone was ......... Apparently some members don't want you to know their age . I am 70 and I hunt more now than I did in my younger years .
  9. Lordy Lordy , it has finally gotten quiet . There was 23 of us in our house today . It was crowded and noisy but it was family so it was fine . WE had a great meal and if someone left hungry , they deserved to be hungry . Several had turkey , potatoes , squash , etc . to take home as my wife and I wouldn't finish it . It turned out to be a great day ! We celebrated a grandson's and son in law's birthday .
  10. An ATV probably costs less than a Casket ......... I take the ATV and a sled with me . I might have to walk back 3/4 mile to get them but it beats dragging a deer that far . The farthest I had to drag a deer was about 1 mile and I thought I would die !
  11. They still havn't found the body of ( Alan Shultz ) who drowned in Sodus Bay last month . Al worked for me at Xerox and I had just talked to Al and his wife about one week before the mis-hap .
  12. I try to keep the bills in a holder next to the computer and pay 80 percent of them On-Line . I found the Water / Sewer bill misplaced and was 2 days late paying it . That cost me an extra 10 percent . Even the quarterly bills seem like they were just paid ! It reminds me of a saying ........... "Life is like a roll of toilet paper . The closer you get to the end , the faster it goes " !
  13. I am negligent in remaining attached at all times . I climb into the stand and then fasten the strap to the tree . I could slip and fall at any given time .
  14. I agree with Larry . Almost a 12 hour class . How many times can an instructor explain safety ? If you havn't gotten the message 1st time , you aren't going to get it ! The State would lose money in this deal and they wouldn't be too happy about that .
  15. A friend in Walworth said they had enough rain that his pond filled up .........
  16. That's a good reason to have a cell phone . You can call someone to let them know you are okay or injured .
  17. Welcome to Hunting NY..............It took you long enough to get here from ArcheryAddix
  18. I don't go in a treestand unless I have the harness on but I have had Brain Farts . i remember sitting in the stand for a few minutes relaxing and then thinking , hey dumb ass , you have the harness on -----not attach it to the tree . I guess they call that a Senior Moment !
  19. I don't hunt on Thanksgiving . We always have the kids and their families at the house and have a crowd . I had done so several years ago , shot a deer at the last minute and by the time I field dressed it , got it loaded and arrived home , the guests were P.O.'d for having to wait for dinner . I don't hunt that day just as a courtesy .
  20. Blur --- Do you have an ATV and if so are you allowed to drive one where you are talking about ? Does the ground get muddy there or does the water run off and not soak in ? I'm 70 and 3 years ago I shot a doe in south Bristol . I dragged it on a sled about 500 yards uphill and then another 100 yards to my vehicle . I was whipped . My son shot a small doe from the same stand last year . He field dressed it and I told him to go up to his truck , drive to the bottom road and pick the deer and myself up . I dragged the deer (no sled) down the hill and it was a breeze on the wet leaves . I have one of the carts and it doesn't work well when the ground is soft . I bought a 2008 Honda Rancher 420 ATV new in 2009 . I haul that with me now . It killed me to spend the money on myself but rationalized that since I had worked all my life to have something that I should buy one and extend my life .
  21. I always thought it would be great to have a home where you could walk out a couple hundred yards and hunt . I drive 100 - 120 miles round trip to do that and don't stay overnight .
  22. Congrats for you and your brother on scoring with the deer . You sure got 'r done .
  23. I felt like a rock at the end of the day but I slept well . My back was killing me so I took some Doan's Pills and then read the warnings and side affects . Shouldn't be taking those things . With the rain we had last evening and the forecast for more rain today my youngest son chose to cancel out . He felt it was better to back out than to get soaked and sit in a stand in 18 mph winds so I didn't go . I will take care of some other business today . My SIL needs some help putting some hay away Friday so I just might do that , then hunt in Groveland and sleep over at my Mother's / Sister's house . Then it will be only an 8 mile drive to my SIL's property Saturday am .
