No I didn't think the quality was anything close to the field & stream boots I had previous to them. They were cheap uninsulated rubber boots not the same as Mucks, mucks have a foam core type top and rubber bottoms. As others have said you get what you pay for.

I bought a cheap pair of rubber boots from Sportsmans Guide a few years ago and if IRC they ripped open the first season I wore them, caught on thorns.

I too have been looking for the "sales" but I don't see anything that I absolutely have to have and the prices are not what I think are really good prices. I did pick up a new 16' ladder stand from Dick's the other day, marked down to $79. it has the full platform that goes all the way back to the tree and a flip up seat. All the other ladder stands seem to have shorter platforms that don't allow you to stand close to the tree to break up your silhouette. If the tree walker climbing stands were to ever go on sale I would be all over that!

wood burning projects
2012_taco replied to 2012_taco's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
That's where I got the idea of the strutting turkey, I watched Dick draw his bird on a custom call and sign it for me! He was a great guy, always donating and working for the promotion of the sport. -
I started playing with a new wood burning kit my wife got me. I'm not much of an artist, but I think if I take my time i will be able to do some neat things on the beard boards and bow racks I make for the NWTF banquets.

I tried to make homemade pizza for dinner a few days ago. It can out pretty good but I used frozen pizza dough and it was too thin. Next time i'll use the pre-made crusts that Wegman's sells. Chicken, brocoli, alfredo with black olives and schrooms.

Those venison dogs have Jalapenos right? Where did you get them made? I've had Wilsons and Bonds both are great! I called Bonds just the other day and they are not making dogs until March. I put 10 lbs of cubed meat aside just to have made into dogs.

My son is a police officer and he says that if they are cranked up on crack that the taser only works for a short time, you have like 15 sec to subdue the perp or they can get extremely aggressive. Plus you can't touch them while the taser s working as you can get tased also! As far as I'm concerned the officer's own safety is and should be 1st concern. If you don't want to be taken by force then don't put yourself in that situation!

I sent a text to my son who is a police officer in Santa Ana Ca. asking what he uses and if he had any recommendations, Yesterday I get a package and he sent me a Fenix PD 35! This is an awesome flashlight! https://www.amazon.com/Tactical-Flashlight-EdisonBright-Lithium-Batteries/dp/B00DR9GWX0 This should be the last flashlight I will ever need! Thanks for the input and feel free to post your lights!

Yes, the fireworks were a nice bonus! Didn't have to stand out in the cold at the ball drop to see some fireworks. Pretty good display for a backyard! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

I use 3x3 carpet tiles I garbage picked from an office renovation. Cut them to fit around the wheel wells and when I throw a deer in the bed I pull the tiles and stack them up in front of the deer. If they get any blood on them I just toss them and cut a new piece. The work fine and are much better on the knees when I have to climb into truck.
-
I've been looking into flashlights ever since I saw the difference it can make when tracking at night. Lawd has a streamlight L1 (I believe) and the blood was much easier to spot than the cheap led light I was using. What kind of flashlights do you guys/gals carry and why do you like it?

Threw together a quick venison taco dip to take to the SIL's. Sorry no pics but it turned out good. I never made it before and didn't want to have to go out and get ingredients so I used some cream cheese, browned the meat seasoned with taco seasoning, chopped up some onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, and topped w/shredded cheddar cheese. baked it for 30 minutes. No left overs!

Lawd, what did the deer weigh? When I saw it I was more concerned about his spine showing so much through the hide, I was worried that it was infected causing it to loose a lot of weight. The whole blood poisoning thing was what bothered me. Glad it was ok, If I didn't get the deer I did, I would have probably taken a chance on it.
-
Lawd, you taught me to cut up my deer and you never mentioned these gloves! I cut myself at least once every time I cut up a deer. I need to check these out, I have a doe to cut up tonight!
-
Well I cut up my doe on Monday after hanging for 1 week. Other than the skinning it went very well. I finished the grinding last night and it's all in the freezer. I took another doe on Monday after work and was planning on hanging for a week again but now with the temps getting so cold I am wondering if it will freeze. If it does freeze will that affect the meat or just slow down the normal breakdown process? I hate the thought of turning on the heater in the garage just to keep a hanging deer from freezing!
-
I am hanging a doe taken on Monday, the temps this week are good I hope? Daytime is predicted to be 40 at most and overnight temps are low 30's. Should I hang it by back legs or by the head? Does it make any difference? I always hang by back legs when skinning and cutting it up. After reading this blog I am going to go right out and pull the tenderloins, don't want to let them dry out!

Zem, I always fire a cap before loading just to be sure the nipple is clear and dry. That doesn't seem to foul the barrel as much as the pyrodex ? Thanks
-
Does anyone else experience a flier from their ML on the first shot? It seems that when my CVA Optima SS barrel is clean the first shot is always way off. The next couple are right on. After 3-4 shots it starts to wander again so I usually do a quick field clean. I am shooting 250 gr. Hornady SST's with the red poly tip, 100 gr pyrodex pellets, Winchester 777 209 primers. I used to shoot loose 777 and Jim Shockey's gold but it seemed that there was always unburned powder left in the barrel and it seemed like it caused the barrel to get fouled quickly. The regular pyrodex just seems to burn cleaner. I've tried Hornady XTP 250 gr and Shockwave bullets I don't recall them shooting any differently? Is it possible that the type of sabot can make any difference? Any suggestions?

Who is hunting Thanksgiving morning?
2012_taco replied to Deerstalker's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
not me, I am always torn on this because I have hockey with old friends every Thanksgiving morning but I haven't gotten a deer yet! The forecast of rain made the decision for me. Hockey it is. I'll hit it hard Friday- Sunday. Good luck to all and enjoy. Give thanks for family and friends! -
Looks like they're done, yum!!!
-
Well here we go....
-
TF, do you totally surround the meat with bacon? Also, I plan to put them in the smoker.
-
Turkeyfeathers, I want to try your venison bites. Doesn't the cream cheese melt out in the smoker? Do you marinate the meat or just dry rub? Thanks

I started a scrape in Lawd's backyard last night! lol
