I went back to a spot in Marilla, busted a bird off the roost, Heard 1 fly down about 5:30, moved to where i thought i heard the bird fly down about an hour later and busted another off the roost! I think in hind sight it was probably the same bird, I think I heard it fly up!. Got 1 gobble at 7:30 re positioned myself and gave a little call.. boom he gobbled right back..never heard him again, I may have bumped him when I relocated to get in a better position? Thermacell ran out of fuel, can't stand the bugs, I quit for today.

I am seriously thinking of trying to go east for some turkey hunting. All my normal tracts in the WNY area don't seem to be holding any gobblers? I know that the population is way down but this is terrible! Does any one have a suggestion of public land in central NY or even a little further east where I might be able to get on some gobbling action? I asked my regional director from the NWTF for his help and he is working on it, but I don't expect he will come up with anything solid. Any suggestions?

The highlight of yesterday was I saw a little fawn, couldn't have been more than a day or two old. It must have heard me walking and thought I was mom, it came right up to me sniffed my leg and the spooked and jumped away and laid down in the brush. I left the area only to run into her again about an hour later. She was going through the woods baa baa baa looking for mom. I hope she found her or I'm sure she will be coyote bait! I would have taken i picture but in my rush to get going i left my phone on the kitchen table.

I went out to Little Valley yesterday stayed in the woods from before 5 till noon, covered a lot of woods, did not hear a single bird! I didn't even find any fresh signs, where are the birds gone? I checked out 3 different areas where I know there has been birds in the past and nothing. I know the numbers are down but this really is hard to take. Lawd, you want to play golf tomorrow? Seriously i don't think I can take many more days of getting up so early, walking so far, and not hearing a single bird!

First light, Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. It's never easy. -
Yes they do, they always head the opposite direction you think they will go. Of course when you try to second guess them and go the other direction they go where you thought they would have gone in the first place. That makes perfect sense don't it?

I went out local as I knew when the rain started I would head home. Didn't hear a bird, only a neighbor set up on the gas line yelping on a box call, checked out a field I have been seeing birds out strutting mid morning and it now has 2 blinds set up on it, no birds though. I think they have been hunted hard during the week. Rain got serious around 9 so I went home and back to bed!

I went to Little Valley yesterday, didn't hear a bird at first light. I struck 1 up around 9 got set up , thought he would come down the logging road below me, wrong he went above me, had him coming in till he got behind a big blow down and hung up. I waited him out and he ended up moving on, so I got up and followed him, called him right back only to have him go below me this time! he ended up circling around me at 60 yds. and walked off. So I followed again, he came back to within 60 yrds again and went above me! Finally he just kept walking off! this lasted about 1.5 hours. Best day so far!

Papist, I use a HI-Viz magnetic front site. It slips over the raised rail. Never had any problems, and I put it through a lot.

I went to a new spot in Leon yesterday, not a gobble, started walking and calling only to find some fresh scratching, set up and called in a lone hen! Damn not a single gobble and I had her calling non-stop looking for me for 1/2 hour, live decoy! If she can't get them to gobble how am I supposed to?

I have a Nikon 440, I've had it for at least 10 yrs? never had any problems, I don't think I've even had to change the battery! OK maybe once? It doesn't have angle compensating but i just range a tree straight out from my tree stand and use that yardage. Out of curiosity i check the base of the same tree to see how much difference there is and its is never more that 2-3 yards different. I take it with during turkey season only to check for 40 yard circle around me, then I make a mental note so I know I can shoot if and when a bird is within range. I don't remember what I paid but I'm sure I got it on sale around $150. -
I often thought why not hunt till 1 PM. As i have walked away from birds at noon several times. As for all day, I believe that you would hunt in the AM and go back out at roost time to try to ambush them heading to the roost. JMHO.

I scouted early Sat. then cleaned my daughters motorcycle. I need to try and sell it as she lives in Baltimore and hasn't had it out for the last 2 years. Sunday my wife and I rode out motorcycles to Sampson State Park to check out the campgrounds. We have a family reunion this August and needed to find a campsite large enough for extra tents. Stopped at Charlies in Canandaigua for a white hot. Nice day for a ride!

checked out a new spot in E. Concord yesterday. Did not hear a bird, no sign in the woods of scratching ,droppings or even a feather. Owner says there are birds here as the neighbor feeds them. He says he sees them all the time. ?I'll have to give it one more try before I scratch it off my list.
