My cabin is in CNY as well and I'm about 30 mins. From Cooperstown, beautiful area with lots of AG/corn fields that roll up into mountains, mature deer both doe and buck tend to have larger then average bodies as they eat well. These are CNY bucks to get your blood flowing, not easy to kill, but they are out there. Go and enjoy, only live once buddy. Weren't you looking to relocate in that vacinity? This will give you the chance to explore that areas beauty.

LIVE From The Woods 2021 Stories And Pictures Let's Have Em!
NYBowhunter replied to grampy's topic in Deer Hunting
My boy got it done today, first hunt, first deer, saw a small spike and 4 does this morning that he opted to pass on, then this afternoon we saw 2 does and this 3 pointer. Shot with 6.5 creedmoor, heart shot, only went 40 yards. We were both in tears as he wished his grandfather had been there to see his first harvest.- 9078 replies

Youth Big Game Hunt Coming Columbus Day Weekend
NYBowhunter replied to Steve D's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
I'll be out there with my 13 yr. old son, says he wants to hold out for a buck, we will see. -
His coach sent out videos and I also paid for him to be part of NCSA, which gave him exposure to all colleges nationwide.

NYBowhunter replied to left field's topic in General Chit Chat
Looks like a young cougar that was really hungry. -
The price on that 8n with brush hog is a great deal and surely you can probably get it for less if you neg., even at 1800 it's a great price.

Sorry to hear but glad your making the right decision for him and putting your feelings to the side for a moment. Some people just string animals along for the sake of thier own feelings and the animal suffers. Tuff decision but the right one.

The process at times can be overwhelming for both parents and kids, my boy was in constant contact with over 20 colleges that were actively looking to recruit him. He then narrowed it down to 10 and MSV was in his top 10. DO NOT get caught up with the college divisions...D1, D2 or D3. My boy had offers from all, it's best fit for your kid, play time and academics is ultimately what matters.. We were lucky in that my boys travel program ran thier own in house showcase where coaches from all over would come see the boys play at our home field, our program also put us in tournaments where they knew college coaches would be attending. My boys coach also takes video of each kid and then blast that video out to all his college contacts (hundreds). My boy was also active online and created his own profile where coaches can watch him pitch. To be honest the head coach from MSV recruited my son by video alone, never seen him pitch a game, when we went for our tour the head coach said he has seen so many kids pitch he can tell by mechanics alone. So here's the very best advise I can give you from me being thru this whole process, if your kid or anyone's kid for that matter is looking to play college ball and they are in thier sophomore/junior year of HS and the current travel league thier in is playing games with no college coaches in attendance or playing local ball just to play or you as a parent look for outside help because that travel team is not getting your kid exposure, then you are not in the right program. Once that kid becomes a junior in HS , the teams wins and loses should mean nothing, at this stage of the game its about putting your kid in front of college coaches at almost every game/tournament. If your league can't do that then move on. My son left a coach at 16 after playing for him for 6 years just because not only me but my son felt he needed the next level and the exposure wasn't there. Within a few months with his new travel team he was committed.

Shooter for sure. Boy has some years on him.

Agreed, I have shot some old bucks and they all taste great to me. How you handle your venison and prepare it is key. I never had bad tasting venison irregardless of age. -
My boy committed to a college, playing next level baseball, so excited for him. Not an easy task considering only 6% of all HS players go on to play in college. Started this journey at age 5 and he's now 17. Give this kid alot of credit and dedication to a game he truly loves. He will be playing at the College of Mt. Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY.

35 years for me but will be my hardest season by far, I will be without my hunting partner, best friend, my dad, lost him back on July 24th. It will be bitter sweet because I lost my life long buddy but excited for my 13 year old to take him on his first ever deer hunt, his grandpa was so excited to get the chance to see him hunt and buy him his first license. I'm just trying to make the best of this season and passing along what my dad taught me. My only goal is to put my son on a deer and have a good time. It hurts like heck, but I must push on.

If it's under 6" and has not flowered yet then leave be, at this time of year I have already given my last cut to my plots and fields.
