  1. Last year my father found one in the front tire of the tractor. 1 tine had punctured the tire between the bar treads, and it rotated so that the base actually got pushed between the tire and rim, but never broke the bead. Sent from my SGH-I927 using Tapatalk
  2. Lot's of deer in 8J & 8H; like Doc said, cameras and snow don't lie. Talking to other hunters, sounds like opening day wasn't good for a lot of folks (personally saw a total of 6 doe, harvested 1). One thing I've noticed is daytime sightings seems to be strictly does, not a single buck in our hunting area. Cameras & tracks are showing lots of nocturnal activities. Wind and warm weather I sure are contributing factors. One of the areas I hunt was pushed hard twice opening week; nothing taken, but after hunting it yesterday, not a single fresh track around. Deer on that property aren't pressured all year, and roam around pretty freely. Me & another guy have had good luck over the years (bow and gun season) sneaking in and out using climbing stands. However, as soon as pushers show up, the deer all get outta dodge and that spot is no longer productive. Usually this happens Thanksgiving day or the weekend after, but this year it was earlier; not sure if it's a new group of hunters and/or position of Thanksgiving in the season this year. Definitely not the same number of hunters out hunting as in the past... Opening day was quite; some shooting just after sunup (won't count the 6:15 AM shots I heard). Then pretty quiet most of the day. First year rifles are legal in Ontario County, but not really so sure about what's more popular to carry afield; most of by buddies are sticking with shotgun or muzzleloader. Listening to the shots in the distance, you could hear the difference in the type of report, but I didn't try to keep track of them.
  3. Usually see them just after sun-up. Seen 2 so far this year, but noticed lots of tracks in the snow the past few days. Once late muzzleloader season is over, it's game on.... In the past I've had good luck with distress calls either just after sunup, or right before dusk. This year. I'll be trying some night hunts.

  5. I work in Syracuse a few times a month, and stop by their stores there quite a bit, pretty satatasified with their prices and selection, so been patiently waiting for the Newark store to open. Stopped by the Newark Store last week, and was very surprised at the number of firearms they had; figured with the UNsafe act, they would be shying away.

  7. Wanted to share my latest coyote adventure with the group. This past week, I've been working from home, locked up in the basement office. Was on a teleconference call on Thursday (around 11AM), so I decided to wander around the house while using wireless headset and cell phone to attend the call. I looked out in the hayfield behind the house, and about 8-900 yard out I spot a coyote wandering around. I grab a rabbit distress call and open the french door on the deck just enough to get my head outside. I work it a bit, when suddenly the coyote turns towards the house and starts a quick trot towards me. Now the panic sets in; I'm on a call with my boss and my entire chain of command, and I'm supposed to report on a few projects I'm running. But I've got this coyote working his way into range. I'm thinking to myself by the time I get the rifle out, load it then sneak out onto the deck, either ( a ) the coyote would have turned tail and left or ( b ) I'll have to give my report. So I simply watch him through the french doors as I give my report. As this point, he's within 75 yards of the back properly line, about 2-300 feet north of the house. Not sure if he's realize he's moving into "human land" or what, but he then turns south and walks parallel to the properly line, directly behind the house he was about 100 yards out. The whole time he as looking and looking for the source of the noise. I finish up my report, and now I'm totally cursing myself for not grabbing the rifle. At this point, he turned back towards the woods, I tried a few more quick calls, but he was done looking and kept wandering on down the field til I lost sight of him as he went over a ridge in the field. Did I mention the whole time I'm working the call, the chocolate lab is in the other room growling and moaning and carrying on ? Oh well, maybe I be able to get him this weekend.
  8. Never used a mojo: a few questions. How far out is it from your set-up point ? Are you worried about leaving scent when you place it? Do you turn it on and let it keep running or just turn it on when a yote is comming in? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using Tapatalk 2
  9. Didn't people say the same thing about in-line muzzle loaders?, compound bows?, and of late crossbows? I agree with you on the AR-15 as a hunting platform; never was my cup of tea and never really took much intrest in them. But I do realize that times are changing, and it's kinda scary that at 42 years old I find myself thinking "Back in the day, we did things different." Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using Tapatalk 2

  11. I have 3 stands set up along the edge of woods/cut corn field from patterning their travels based on routes / time of day. sitting in the morning stand, watched 3 doe come out of the standing corn next field over and walk within 30 yards of the evening stand heading for the pines. A few shots heard before sun-up, but for the most part quiet. I can remember 10-15 years ago shooting all morning. Neighbors have a domestic turkey who keeps reminding me of spring turkey season. Unfortunatly, I think his days are numbered, and after Thursday I won't be hearing him anymore. Good luck to everyone out there and be safe. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using Tapatalk 2

    Fillet Knife

My grandfather gave me a Cabelas knife 30 years ago; it was used when he gave it to me. Wooden handle is darkened and this finish missing and leather sheath is pretty britle, but it still cuts as good today as it did when it was first given to me.
  13. I've shot 2 deer with a .40 over the years, both with 180 grain black talons. 1st deer was a 8 pt buck, I had the shotgun unloaded and on the ground tied to my climbing stand, and was just starting up the tree when my father spooked the buck on the way to his stand. I hear the buck coming through the ticket, and had a clean shot where he would cross the trail I was set-up on. I got off 2 quick shots from about 20 yards, and he dropped like a sack of bricks within 60-70 years. Even going through a rib, the black talon stayed in 1 piece and expanded as designed. 2nd deer was a doe that dad had shot on the opening day that there was like 2 foot of snow on the ground (16 ? years ago)... He hit it in the front shoulder, and the doe travelled for about a mile in and out of the woods and across open field just far enough away that dad wasn't comfortable taking a shot. She finally went into a drainage ditch that was overgrown and so thick it was almost impossible to walk through. I left the shotgun, and just carried the pistol into the ditch, thinking that I could "push" her out to a point where dad could get an open shot. As it turned out, I found her laying down and used a single shot to finish the chase. Same performance from the black talon on this one as well.
  14. Debian is what I cut my teeth on... a co-worker had a hosting business that was running a couple of debian servers in a lights out datacenter somewhere near Rochester. I was intrested in purchasing the business, so loaded up a VM and starting teaching myself... as fate would have it, I didn't purchase the business, but I did keep playing with the server I created. We got a few systems at work that I manage, but it's a cookbook installation, and a custom webmin interface. We're migrating these systems away from the local sites and to a remote data center where another team manages them, so I've lost touch with the production systems; the one at my site is there just in case any legacy clients try to connect. Unity.. I'm still on the fence with it. I've been a windows guy since "Windows for workgroups 3.11"... I've figured out the new Windows 7 interface, so Unity wasn't that bad.
  15. Funny you mentioned Linux.. I'm currently in Arlington TX attending a week long intro class for work. More of a Microsoft guy, with limited Linux experience in the enterprise world. I've run a few favors of desktop Linux over the years on test boxes. This Christmas I got a new laptop and set up dual boot with Ubuntu, but now after a few days of class thinking about reloading with Fedora.
  16. As a normal “lurker” and not very often poster, I can see the issues and attacks that occur on this board. Do I condone it? No; Does it make me less likely to post my opinion? Yes. Do I respect the opinions and passion of other on here? Yes. I watch the site on a regular basis to keep up with the day to day chatter. I’ve even learned a lot about people just by reading their posts. It has been (and I’m sure will continue to be) entertaining and informative… there’s always 2 sides to every story, and everyone has an opinion. The discussions that go on here are also local, and of a topic that I am interested in and actively participate in and therefore in some way or another affect not only me but all of us all. Because of the anonymity of forums like this one, people may say something important that they might not be bold enough to state publicly, but it can also encourage a sandbox mentality as well. It's just part of what makes this work, and it entails a certain amount of risk. But it also entails a certain amount of maturity and acceptance of other’s ideas and views. I am on several bulletin boards for personal and professional reasons. Some require a “full disclosure” (name, location, professional affiliation, etc.) upon registering; this insures that if someone gets out of hand, they can be dealt with. It also insures credibility of the posters. I am also a member of several boards where there is no identification needed; does this cause the board and its members to lose credibility and respect? Only if they hide behind the anonymity of the internet. This is something I learned long ago; it’s something I do today and will continue to do tomorrow.
  17. The Trees - Rush There is unrest in the forest, There is trouble with the trees, For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas. The trouble with the maples, (And they're quite convinced the're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light. But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made. And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade. There is trouble in the Forest, And the Creatures all have fled, As the Maples scream oppression, And the Oaks just shake their heads. So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights. "These oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light." Now there's no more oak oppression, For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw.
  18. I've got 3 Moultrie D-40's and 2 of the newer D-50's, and am happy with their performance over some other models I have. Here's a link to internet specials Moultrie has on their website. http://www.moultrief...oultriespecials The D-50 2 pack is actually cheaper that any place I could find on-line (including ebay)

  20. I've always noticed the same silence, and then within a few minutes, it's like I'm hyper-sensitive to any and all sounds in the woods. I think that helps to build an appreciation of what nature has to offer me. Very well said; For me, I don't pray to or for it or tell it I'm sorry; but I will say "Thank-you".. for the experience of the hunt, and for the opportunity to provide for my family.
  21. I've got 2 daughters who are now 10 & 13.... I've got an endless supply of "one-sies", old socks and underware that are used as rags for all kinds of work (most are either close to or are 100% cotton). Just last week I carried a brake caliaper into the parts store in a nice light-blue one-sie and got razzed pretty bad by the gal behind the counter.
  22. I know some people eat their soup with a lot of wine, others with none. Me, no wine, but I'll say a few words of thanks before eating ... Thanks for being fortunate to spend the time in the woods away for all the everyday issues life throws at me. And thanks for the memories of this year's season; successful or not, there's always some new special memories created and burned into my brain.
