  1. Well, hate to admit it, but the Fat lady has sung her song for me. Went out this morning, and very much the same thing like the rest of the month. Silence like a church!!! This was the last time out for me, work calls from now on.
  2. Like you, I feel your pain.
  3. Well, it may end up that way for me as well this season. I have two more days to try for a bird, tomorrow morning and Friday. This has been a very frustrating season to say the least. Tuff getting up early and being in the woods at 5am then staying till the quitting time without hearing a single peep. All my hot spots have fizzled this year?
  4. still trying to get a bird.....after that, working around the house on the landscaping. Bought 30 bags of mulch the other day from Lowe's, they have a sale 5 bags for $10.00. Already put down 21 bags, 9 left to go.
  5. Glad to hear the report. Will be heading back out starting tomorrow.....
  6. Like you, all my spots have been very silent up to this point as well. Heading back out again Tues thru Thursday this week. Hopefully by now, they want to play?
  7. Good post Mike......thanks
  8. Don't think nesting birds will be in the corn fields? Most nests I have stumbled on always have been in the woods along logging roads.
  9. WTG on a dandy bird. Like when a plan comes together......
  10. The best of Luck to you and Gator, Danno!!!
  11. As the mating season winds down, the gobblers shed weight like a buck does during the rut. Can't tell how many good 2 year olds tipped the scales at 17-18 lbs. over the years. Usually, early in the season is when you get the true heavy weights.
  12. Very quiet season here in WNY as well. Over that last 25 years, I have had good luck right up to the last day of the season. Little over a half month left......sounds like another photo finish this year as well.
  13. Danno, Dick Kirby was my barber when I was in high school. Graduated back in 73' from Orchard Park. He would show me all the mouth calls he was making at the time on an arbor press he had in his home. That veterinarian's name was Dr. Paul Pellam, actually met the guy at one of Kirbys seminars many years ago.
  14. Congrats Danno!!! That's a milestone to us youngsters!!!
  15. Hope you hear a gobble, or better yet see one!!
  16. After being out 4 mornings now without even hearing a single peep, I'm begining to wonder what's up with all the silence? I can understand gobbling once before fly-down then becoming henned up afterwards, but this is crazy!!!
  17. WTG!!! Awesome bird for sure!!!
  18. Was going to pick "D" as well, but now thinking "A" might be good too. This way you can sleep in on some days to catch up on your sleep and then head out later in the day. As far as "not disturbing the hens on nest" theory, that is and was the thinking for many years, I say hogwash. The odds of you stumbling onto a nest is like finding a needle in a haystack. So what if your walking around in the woods during the morning hours and stumble onto a nesting site? Same difference right...........Many states have all day hunting hours now, if their DEC departments noticed any bad results of this time frame, they would of canceled. I go for "A"
  19. My very thoughts as well......hang tuff, things will get batter for sure. Lot's of season left, just be sure to bring bug spray, The Black flys are out in droves now!!!
  20. Another very quiet morning in the spring woods? Went to a spot where I have taken a few birds before, nothing? Tuff to sit in a spot hours on end and not hear a single peep. Wonder if the gobbling lull is here? Hopefully, things will start to pick up closer to the middle/end of this month.

    Changes?

Seems that the gun season for deer has lost interest with me, but I still enjoy going out with the bow. Spring turkey season has always been my favorite bar none.
  22. According to Sunday's "Outdoors" page, seems that their is pending Legislation on eliminating back tags in NYS. Guess New York and one other state are the only ones left with this stupid requirement. Hope it passes......always thought it was a dumb idea to begin with. Besides, most outdoor wear doesn't have provisions for pinning your tags to anyway.
  23. There are a lot of brands and models out there, and I have used a bunch except the very expensive ones such as DSD, etc. The Feather Flex brand made some a while back that were very life like, and I still use their hen and jake decoys till this very day. Only had one instance, many years ago, in which a "Jake" spooked at the decoy set-up. Decoys add to the illusion of the hunt. Gobbler hears a hen(you) and comes it seeing a decoy which he thinks was the hen making the calls. I always carry mine with me each time I go afield.
