Shoot young bucks to let older ones mature
Culvercreek hunt club replied to nyslowhand's topic in Deer Hunting
Maybe it is just becasue I have shot a boat load of bucks that are small 8's and down over my life and now I live in an area that has plenty of permits for me to fill my freezer with but there is nothing that makes my blood pressure "spike" and insetting the adrenaline running like having an encounter with a really big buck, even if I can't get the shot. -

this wasn't fenced. just a large managed property with supplemental food in the way of plots and habitat management. This buck actually died of old age. and I guess that is part of my point. YOU CAN'T genetically manage a wild herd. too many variables. You have no idea what the does are bringing to the table. I think if you asked FourSeasons you see that even in farm raised deer they track the pedigree of the does as much as they do the bucks. -

I have a buddy in Maine that has a range in his sand pit with target stands at 25,50,100,200,300 and 350. for giggles when I went up shootign I took my shotgun up with 3" federal premium sabots up to play with. I was actually surprised. in bags it did really well at 200. 300...not so much...lol in my 3-9 scope the point on the duplex was dead on at 200 a max magnification. 300 was a wish and a prayer. -
Yeah. she's got a killer deal and 3.05 /# finished cut weight.

body look like a classic 2 and a half year old. i probably wouldn't shoot him for another year. Half of that gene cocktail comes from the does so in the wild there is no telling what could come out of a breeding. -

what makes it well bred and genetically superior? It actually is a wild deer. it was on a managed property with supplemental feeding though. -
yes

if the yield is there and it's good beef that isn't a bad price. Hell, burger in the store is more than that. Sounds like it's worth a shot it me.

A doe we got at camp this year was hit too far back. we had snow luckily and she started up hill, never laid down once until the end when I caught up with her after about a 2.5 mile loop (according to my GPS.) The last 100 yards was up a hill so steep I had to shoulder my rifle and use the trees as hand holds to get up it. she was right on top. took me quite a while becasue she got in with other fresh deer tracks by a creek bottom and then went about 100 yards IN the creek bottom. tough finding where she came out.

And I think that is why the thread went another direction. I can't see how anyone could justify what happened here so the conversation expanded. Your one sentence about sums it all up in this case.

What is this guys potential? any ideas? would he be a good one to take out of the "gene pool"? -
so what is the price? what do you end up with as a price per pound for his estimated 120# yield?

Well the one up in sandy creek was not because of the "rifle change" because I believe NZ and there wasn't a "change". The lady south of Rochester was about point blank range. I don't know about others -
Well Obama threatened NC with with holding federal funds. I bet he does the same thing. I thnk another nice touch would be to arrest the officials for breaking Federal law. If he is going that way I would love to see Cuomo make that push. INA: ACT 274 ...would love to see that pushing war. all these officials hancuffed for a felony and lose their positions.

Doewacker runs bird dogs. I believe his point was if someone is shooting at his dogs it could just as easily be shooting at him. i grew up running rabbits with some great hounds. We never went out during deer season and back then it didn't take much to be tagged out becasue tags were so few. I almost think I remember a regulation for the Northern zone where you couldn't run dogs afield during open regular season. but that was a lot of years ago and my memory isn't what it use to be.

Look on line. That is not in force. It wasn't removed prior to the print date.
