Maybe one of the Co-op guys here has 4-5 years of data on their harvests. -

A lot of variables but I have been trying to find a corresponding graph for body size (weight) to age. -

teach them to look at the body rather than the rack. Just up the game to 2.5 and they will be surprised with the outcome and fill their freezer faster. -

Too many hunting accidents this year
Culvercreek hunt club replied to chas0218's topic in General Hunting
how many of the accidents were caused by a rifle that having a shotgun would have prevented?? -

I don't care what genetics a deer has, if it dies at 1.5 what difference does it make? Personally i am looking for a more mature buck. It could have half his rack busted off and it makes no difference to me really. Now I would love to have a big framed 10 but my first goal is the 3.5 or better. So in your comment it doesn't fit how I hunt of even about the first property I mentioned where you commented on. I don't know where you hunt of how you hunt of what you hunt. Where I am I rarely see a spike. some fork horns but the majority of 1.5's I see are small 6- 8 pointers. between the 4 properties I hunted this year I had 16 different 1.5 year olds within range that could have been taken. 1 spike and two 4 pointers the rest were bigger. -

As a byproduct, in a healthy WILD herd you can expect these averages. Obviously there are factors such as severity of winters that we contend with but this gives and idea. And based on the numbers from the penned study it would appear to agree that the Forks would have better potential that a spike at first glance but in as wild herd there can also be the impact of a late breeding and late birth added into the mix. Personally I think the evaluation of a 2.5 year old lets a lot of that fluctuation fade out and gives a better idea of what can happen to a specific deer. If that makes sense. -

High grading management? Keep your pen raised studies. While they are beneficial for understanding how the genetics are arranged in the Whitetail they are not how it happens in a wild population. That study says nothing about the actual health of the deer in the study(I would assume good based on the protein % being fed). There is one factor and one factor alone that has the biggest impact falling short on potential. It isn't Ag crops. it isn't genetics, it isn't mast crops, or any of the other laundry list. It is AGE. Do all the studies you want but when the majority of the bucks in your area don't make it past 1.5 years old, genetics don't mean squat. lol -
Marlin Guide Gun .45-70

I've seen two shot with a Winchester 45-70 at about 40-50 yards and both looked like a carpet was pulled out from under them. lol -

I have a friend who is hunting a property that is being heavily managed here in WNY. The owner is taking a little different approach to the friends and family that are hunting it. The adjoining properties are starting to get on board with the approach as well I guess. It is in an area with pretty liberal doe permits being available. Shoot whatever buck you want to shoot, but every buck taken MUST have a full shoulder mount done. So if you are willing to belly up the $$ and want the mount then squeeze the trigger. -
I have opposed AR with every breath I have had since day one. I think it took Stubby to get me on board if he represents any portion of the hunting population. Having that little amount of flawed logic tells me there just might be enough out there that it warrants a mandate. Where do I sign on the dotted line for mandatory AR's
-
he was a scrapper. Congrats.
-
a quartering to shot at a moderate range, you wouldn't take the shot through the shoulder with a shotgun or a rifle?
-
And just for the record Stubby. QDM is a management principle. QDMA is an organization. Just so you get it straight.
-
I have a better idea than any more commenting to educate him. Just ram you head into the fridge a few times. It will more beneficial results...lol
-
how many QDMA events have you been to? how many talks and who put them on and where? I have heard the mention of larger racks but it is always as a byproduct of QDM which includes good habitat management and improvement, a balanced age structure (letting 1.5 year old bucks walk),a reasonable buck to doe ratio, tracking sighting harvest information.

The Dakota Pipeline
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Water Rat's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
and a large section of the pipeline routing is INSIDE an existing ROW that has other pipelines in it. -
You ever bird hunt with a dog? I owned a Springer and if someone started lobbing rifle shots at me/the dog while I was small game hunting they had better be ducking for cover. The dog was always working inside 30 yards to me, 50-60 max after the shot if I did my job. The dog was always in a red jacket so should have been no excuses to mistake him. We hunted birds during bow but kept him home during regular season.

Better to a little research about their principles. you couldn't be more wrong.
-
The best land is actually land with a well balanced herd that is sized below the carrying capacity.
-
But you example is for a stationary plant in a fairly isolated area. That is not even comparable to a wild whitetail population. but you knew that. very very few control enough property to impart a real influence on the whitetails genetics. Yes you can effect the population, sex ration and even the age structure but is in not a confined test tube and to suggest you could have an impact on the genetic make up is ridiculous.
