  1. Two timber managers I have dealt with have stated to me their approach is just as mentioned. Leave the tops as a partial barrier to browsing until the seedlings get growing.
  2. Possibly the comment was made to him that it was at least 3.5. Lol. It's left antler is as big as a Come can at the base
  3. Why would it suck? That thick undergrowth is much better habitat and will hold more deer and other wildlife?
  4. That is exactly what a lot of the state land needs
  5. Got to see the rack first hand today and meet the hunter. Very nice guy and that picture doesn't do it justice.
  6. A portfolio just isn't important to some hunters and the memories are still there. The hunter was there, only reason for a pic is to show it to others. Great deer.
  7. Have you done a comparison both ways in the calibers you reload for?
  8. Lol. Been there. FYI. The safe act does not effect private ammo sales at all (for now)
  9. There isn't a need to crimp for a rifle other than a lever of semi. (or ammo that will be handled roughly) There are many that hold the thought that a crimped round will give you a more uniform release and consistent powder burn. I have found that with my .223 the groups are tighter with the same bullets and loads using a crimp.
  10. I understood you had two separate conditions in your post but I wasn't sure anyone just reading the thread would see that. It may have come across as trying this with a charged round in your first post.
  11. It can happen if you aren't using that factory crimp and trying to load right at the lands. Everybody I have talked to back off a bit on the OAL once they establish the measurement.
  12. As Shawn confirmed. It is very lightly crimped so even hand pressure on the bullet would slide it back. It is a very acceptable process but I don't know where you are getting the powder in the chamber part from his posts?
  13. Once the fat is off the skin...salt, salt and more salt. When you think there is enough on it, put more...lol
  14. I have 3 people That I have registered to vote that weren't and I will be dragging to the voting booths this fall. If everybody upstate just got 3 that didn't do it last time.
  15. Bear rugs are very marketable. Often taxidermists I have dealt with didn't even take a deposit on them because they know they can make their money and then some on the sale if you don't pick it up. You may be able to work a deal with the taxidermist to give you credit towards a mount you want to do for giving them the hide. The biggest issue with bear skins in early season is getting them cooled down quickly and getting all the fat off the skin. The hair will begin to fall out (slip) quickly because the fat is so prone to bacteria growth in the decay process. The fat on a bear is nothing like that on a deer. I lost the skin on the one I got 2 years ago. even though I had it skinned and in the freezer with 5 hours of shooting it, I screwed up and rolled it tightly and the cold didn't penetrate the big ball of fur I had. Live and learn.
  16. Go easy on the crimp. just enough to hold it. you want it to move a bit. Like Pistol said. you don't want a bunch of force involved
  17. The Henrietta store is going through a remodel right now. Their stock is down waiting for the new floor plan.
  18. I would suspect those "mental rejects" are probably out there in the same spots even with the 500' rule. I understand the reasoning behind the 150' change. Many of the over populated areas are those that have areas that allow deer to live but are too close to currently hunt. Recovery will remains the sticking point whether the 500' rules stands or it is changed to 250; or 150'. The way I read it, the change isn't automatic. it just gives the DEC the opportunity to make a change is they see fit. You may very well see it implemented in areas like 8C to assist in the population control or it may be by town or such.
  19. Always blowing thing out of proportion and making crap up. Everyone one knows it was shot in a hangar in Area 51.
  20. DEC makes it sound like the boarder is in the middle of the river but then their map shows otherwise http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/67913.html http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lowerniariver.pdf
