  1. You guys heading for another thread about small hands?
  2. The GPS I use is pretty basic. No fancy maps or anything. I used it for this purpose and as a "get back to the truck" feature. It runs about $100, maybe less on sale. But i have an ariel map from Google earth I printed out (36"x48") I used Google Earth to plot trails, stand locations on our leased land. All from coordinates I acquired using the GPS. makes it very nice. If I have a new guy at camp I can get him with about 10-15' of any stand location I am sending them to and I know they will find it.
  3. I get al the other points he brought up But I don't understand the string at 20". I read in the summit specs it is recommended for trees between 8 and 20" diameter. Is the string just a guage to eyeball it? I would think a string about 63" long to check the girth would give you a better indicator of the max size for the tree.
  4. Phade. Is the guy you are dealing with a novice or is he a master?
  5. Just one word for the guys down in the Souther Tier------Amish
  6. I agree with the way the penalty should fit the crime but on this thread I was speaking more to how do we as hunters handle offenses we see. I have seen it go two ways here on this site (in general) the offense is pointed out and if the offender cops an attitude it goes south pretty quickly. I have also seen the "Wow I didn't know that" response fromteh offender and it peters out quickly. I think it is one thing to not know and then truely feel bad and make a change but entirely different when they are called on it and then you get the line of excuses and the "I am not the only one here doing it" approach. The latter will never get a pass from me. And one day when I screw up (we all do) and if I take that last approach I hope you call me on it too, becasue I will deserve it.
  7. FYI, many counties now have interactive tax maps. The one from monroe county and I know Herkimer county is the same, has the ability to view in a map. when you zoom in and hold the cursor over the property corner it give you a coordinate for it. that coordinate can be placed in a GPS and used to locate the corners in close enough proximity to have an understanding of the property lines. Close enough to put up stands and such. I verified the coordinates I have from a surveyor for the one property I hunt and the values off the site were within 5' of the actual survey. Pretty useful tool when going into a new property.
  8. The reality is there are a bunch of them out there that do a wide variety illegal things. every time we see it we should call it out and DRIVE the point home. If you are not only a law reaker but dumb enough to post it on a public forum (where it can be used to make hunters look bad) then we as hunters should give it in a double dose.
  9. well you answered how you wouldn't feel. Now how about a direct answer to the questions? You are sounding like the Obama Cabinet member when asked how many have signed up for health care.
  10. So would you feel the same way about a guy shooting a deer with a crossbow during archery season. After all they are still being killed with a sharp blade? So what exactly is an offense that is worthy to call out?
  11. Shawn, What is your obession with WNY's chops? LOl Sorry, had to.
  12. I don't take anything for granted any more. I ran into one guy that bought a sportsman and his bow license. and becasue the tag said BOW/ML he figured they made a mistake and becasue the tag said it he could hunt with his ML. I do know guys that don't even own a ML though and won't hunt the late season but are really die hard bow hunters and they buy both so they can get the tag for each and use it early season.
  13. Never mind....lol. There is no NON resident sportsman. only Non resident SUPER sportsman.
  14. Curious, Did he ask that the original one be went to them so they could examine it?
  15. Damn strange neighborhood Grow...lol
  16. Now if the same guys that estimated a deer track at 6" were the ones that estimated the weights of the deer, I think we have the problem solved.
  17. i once had that problem with regular nocks about 10 years ago, before I used a loop. at draw my release would pinch the nocks forward and pop them off the string. The loop fixed it.
  18. That is becasue in the "old" days. you could lay a case of Whoop a$$ on someone you caught. Or the dirtbags would have gotten straightened out by there parents growing up and they knew respect and right from wrong. Not today. I am sure these scum had something happen to them in their lives and the blame for how they act is squarely on that incident or the people that talked to them the wrong way when they were young. Hell growing up I expected an ass whooping from my friends parents if I screwed up and was positive there would be one waiting for me at home on top of it. There is no respect and fear anymore. No consequences for actions. If you found out who stole these they would get nothing but a slap on the wrist so where is the down side for them. They may be using them but could just as easily it might not be a hunter, just someone selling them for 50 cents on the dollar to make a few bucks.
  19. From the title I think he is talking about it coming off the string. Not the nock out of the arrow. Op. Where are you. Lol
  20. I believe the factory reduced recoil loads are about the parameters you suggested for the 06
  21. Me either. When I see someone new coming in I just want to see them shooting as much as they can with their hunting rifle. While there are a ton of excellent rounds out there some just are harder to find, harder recoil and more expensive to shoot. That was the point I was trying to make
  22. Biz. Know your audience and try just a tad of realism. 15 year old kid. Already knows the gun he wants. Had a caliber question. And anything he is likely to shoot in his young career he can with the 06 or 270 win. The best thing he can do for himself is shoot and shoot some more. That is best done with an affordable round. The belted mags don't fit that category. IMO
  23. Biz let's be real. You keep pushing this round and YOUR gun every time a thread comes up. The kid didn't ask what gun could he buy that would allow him to be way over powered and over priced for his first gun. Quit beating your chest and grabbing your crotch to try to impress us all with how long your shots have been and what a great gun you have. We have all heard it soooooo many times. Especially in the threads with the new hunters coming in, just try to help them and leave the feather strutting cock dance at the door.
  24. And then utilizing it in a NY whitetail season where any benefits of the round are basically lost due to relatively short shot distances. AND how much would a kid be out in $$$ to get him proficient at ranges where it could make a difference? Just Biz being Biz...lol
  25. I say Ditto to what Western NY said. Get a topo and an wriel of of google of the property and get it laid out before you start. Better to invest in a manager and do it right ONCE. Have a plan and keep working it towards the goal.
