  1. Oh my God...give it a break. You are the biggest "chicke little' guy here. I have no horse in this race but to make it sound unsafe is pure BS
  2. OHHHHHH. So jealous Eddie. I tried to get a few fromthe farmer so I could make of snack stick...He wouldn't cough any up. Good luck
  3. It has been the same issue for the years I have hunted. NZ has been opened early
  4. I just knew Pygmy would be on this thread...lol
  5. They say it isn't illegal if you start by yelling "SURPRISE"
  6. And if you are luck enough to land one like this there is a BUNCH of meat...lol. http://www.fieldandstream.com/photos/gallery/hunting/big-game-hunting/big-game-hunting-season-tips/2012/09/us-veteran-sets-maine-s One thing I have noticed about bear though. A 150# dressed buck will give you more meat than a 200-250# dressed bear. must be the hide and heavier bones. Much higher yeild on a deer.
  7. Whay aren't they outlawing th sales and possession of video games and smartphones. Seems those are promoting poor health through inactivity. And they could get a chunk out of that evil big business .....Apple
  8. I have been working on the shape round since I quit smoking. Been 7 months
  9. Well take a digital camera with ya. I would love to see some pics from out there
  10. Biz, How much do they rape you for shipping the meat back? or don't you?
  11. Biz...if they are guiding won't they be able to provide guidance inthe size of the ones you see. I have heard for us Eastern White tail hunters.... a good Muley is hard to jusdge because they look so much buigger. I have no reference though.
  12. first guide page I have seen with no package prices posted.... weird
  13. Wasn't it Geno that was gonna give 308 sharpshooter a toss last year? or was that Elmer?...lol
  14. I will be off and hunting the opener. I will hunt the first two weeks after work in the evenings and during the first weekend. The next weekends will be up in the NZ for ML and Rifle openers. then back to SZ for bow weekends until gun opens.
  15. Cross bow would be a legal implement during the youth hunt becasue it is grouped with the firearms currently. as would a ML
  16. You must know different people than I do. Everyone I know down in SC, VA, MD and FL all gut a deer just like we do. Ice is still made by chilling water and the blood in the pick up boxes still gets washed out...lol.
  17. Weird. Someone should get on the phone to all the souther hunters and tell them that it is so hard to hunt in warm weather. States like SC have been deer hunting for a month already.
  18. The fat on a bear is much different than the fat on a deer. It is VERY sensative to spoilage and needs to be cooled down quickly and skinned fast if you intend on either doing a mount or a rug. If the fat starts to turn it will cause the hair to fall out and could ruin the hide. If you are skinning it try to leave the fat on the meat as you trim this hide off (trying to get as much fat off the hide during skinning is easier). the the fat can be trimmed off the meat much like a deer. It is almost a jelly consistency. Get as much off the meat as you can and like has been said the are what they eat. I love bear meat and it is my daughters favorite meat even over domestic stuff. I prefer to cook it raised which lets any fat fall away from it. marinade and rubs are great for it. One of my favorite for steakes is a 50/50 mix with montreal steak seasoning and brown sugar. Into a blender and pulverize the mix. rub it on the steaks and wrap in plastic wrap over night. then gril as any other steak. I know there were other threads that discussed this so you might want to seasrch. CAUTION!!!! I am not saying anyone should do this because of possible diseases just like pork. I eat my bear medium...never well. just understand any risks before you cook it. Good luck and one thing to think about before you go out....who will do your mount or rug. You are going to want to get it to them as soon as possible and knowing what you are going to do with it makes a big difference on how to cut during gutting and the skinning process. Pick one out and talk to them BEFORE tha hunt. then you know averything you will need to do so the mount is just as you want it. mounts are usually a money loser but a rug you can usually get your money back on if you ever sell it. (if it is taken care of) My taxidermists doesn't even request a deposit on a rug because he knows he can get more than his money back. Good luck
  19. LMFAO....I knew you were goign to comment about pressure. "it is just a deer...it is just a deer...it is just a deer"
  20. No doubt it is a problem. I just disagree the solution is an unenforcable law that does nothing. Do you really want to let the responsibility lay where it should? unhealthy habits should be reflected in each persons health insurance. just like auto insurance. That is the only fair way to do it. If you are taking care of yourself then you should have lower costs. But the ones that get all warm and fuzzy over these type of laws are the same ones not willing to make the tough calls and hold the unhealthy habits accountable. You drink 2 gallons od soda a day with your McDonalds meals and eating whole pizzas and can't afford the increase in premiums . Guess what...you chose it.
  21. I didnt have time to dive in further but since NY was one of the group of states I was trying to find the actual numbers in an age reange showing increases..or not
  22. If we can believe the second link, which I belive was the basis for hte article linked first, there is over 30% + license possibilities that could participate each year. THese are people that do not buy a license every year. many do it just 1 out of 5 years. Preety good pool to draw from if it is done rigth. They also discuss the national increas in hunter numbers since 2006 and one of the factors contributing to it is youth opportunities.
  23. Couple good articles. I woul dlike to point Doc and Eddie to Fig 5 on Page 4 of the second link and point out they are really screwing with the North East's average...lol http://thinkingafield.org/2012/08/new-growth-in-hunting-fishing-participation.html http://www.nssf.org/PDF/HuntingLicTrends-NatlRpt.pdf
