Finally got Dad's Cabana done
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Deer Hunting
It is on some masonry scaffold I picked up cheap from a guy going out of business. old 2x4's and left over 1/2" CDX plywood. Up hill side is about 8' off the ground t the platform the downhill side is about 10. the joints are all tight and i will put plywood over the window openings at the end of the season. Next spring we will put in plexiglass but still working on the way that will work. He has visions of a buddy heater in there and insulating the walls. I precut everything except the window openings. I ran the plywood by and used a chainsaw to cut flush with the framing once it was up. I skidded the platform in with my 4 wheeler and all teh materials were brought in on the wheeler to. no carts...just the racks. -
I know it is late but we just couldn't get it in this year. Seems like we always bite off more than we can chew for the yearly project list. Thought I would share some pics. It is on a easterly facing side hill with a flat hemlock plateau to the west and a 150 yard view down the hill to the bottom. the side hill is mixed timber and blowdowns. They really hang there with a strong west wind. just have to place the windows and paint next year. I don't think it will produce since it is new but he is determined to sit in it this year. Time will tell.

That is a great program Sits. I wish organizations would do a better job of marketing those services to the masses. I cut my own and never do anything with the pelts. I will look into that around me

You did the right thing Wildcat and should feel very good about yourself. I wish 2bad experiences I have had on 2 good bucks turned out the same way. Both were shot on the ground with their head up as I was tracking them with mortal wounds. I actually saw one guy shoot one of them. I actaully asked the guy if he was going to mount it after he damn near threatened me that it was his deer and he said "yes, why wouldn't I . It is a great buck". That deer wouldn't have meant as much to you as if the whole hunt was yours. But kudos on knowing your area and making the right call. a damn pic would have been nice though...lol

never thought abou that...bleached blonde bucks...lol. Makes sense though.

When hunting is not fun anymore.
Culvercreek hunt club replied to noodle one's topic in General Hunting
The State land by our camp gets some opening weekeknd pressure, but after that we hardly hear any shooting there and it is sizable land. we swing over late season and push some areas back to our property and never see anyone. Hunter sign in the woods are very uncommon. I bet the land around the city does get hammered though. -

Really? seems to me there are more per capita dollars sent to the cities than the cities send out. so what services are you talking about that the cities use "zero" of? -
you don't get excited about a kill? I do and I am not ashamed of it. It is part of the sport..part of the traditional excitement of our heritage. ...hmmmm...we can hunt and kill but we can't enjoy the killing part of it? Sounds like another one that is all for femminizing the country. youth sports with no score keeping dressing the QB's in dresses because they can no longer get hit feelings...feelings...feelings.

I have donated quite a few deer int he past. I think the program is great. Personally, I would rather see the needy get the meat rather than some of these abused social programs, but that is another story. I think charging a hunter to donate is about the craziest thing I have heard in a long while. hmmmm....charge to help the needy out ??? ??? . you have to be kidding me. Even if the cost comes from taxes I think it should work. tax money to put good food in front of them or tax money to feed them in other ways. still tax money.

Here is one that will generate some debate.
Culvercreek hunt club replied to nyantler's topic in General Hunting
I could be wrong but....I think even with the hunters and the herd health aside they wouldn't pass it for fear of losing license revenue during that 3 year period. I would still hunt but I think that some wouldn't bother. I do agree NY...this would seperate teh horn hunters from the ones that believe in the QDM process. -
I end up using the same saying as she does for clothes and shoes..."This?....I have had this for years"...lol

You two sure you just didn't have chili for dinner?

I have a lever mod 94 in 30-30. Love it. But if you want the longer action rounds I think you just narrowed your available model pook way down. Is there a lever gun out there that will shoot an 06 that isn't a BLR

Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I believe the way they get deer/sq mile is total population of a WMu and then divide by the WMU land area...total....everything included. the total population of deer in the state is very high.....if there is less usable area in a WMU due to development then by observation the deer population may appear even higher because they are concentrated in that usable area. in reality ...a deer doesn't need all that much room to exist. They are masters at living in small over looked areas.- 1885 replies

Culvercreek hunt club replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I think I agree with both...how is that for riding the fence...lol. I think across the state the herd in in higher numbers now. Back then there seemed to be areas that had a sever [problem with over population. IF that makes sense.- 1885 replies

When we are talking most of the rounds listed above it really boils down to two old standard casings that have been modified over the years. The ought 6 and .308 have given us some of the best shooting cartriges around for the type of hunting we do. You really can't go wrong with any of them and like Steve said...inside 200 yards it really doesn't matter what you pick.....a well placed shot and the deer is goiing down.

Bummer...hang in there. did you grunt to him again?
