I found when windy deer are in a hurry to get where they are going. You have to be on alert to get that shot. They are very spooky and don't like to hang in one spot too long.
This is my neighbor up by my place. He shot the deer at 6 feet! Yes six feet. Was on the ground in some heavy stuff and had one opening. This deer came by and he missed the first shot. Deer was wondering off and he only had the buck growl with him and it worked. Deer walked right back to him. Six feet shot was right through the neck. He is a hell of a shot with that recurve. His face is concealed because I didn't ask him if I could post the picture. Nice 1.5 year old!
My Father in law Gus who we lost this year would tell stories of hunting pheasant with bow and arrow when he was a kid. This was all done in the Bronx just as you go over the Whitestone bridge. He and his buds would make home made bows and arrows. Yes they did get a few! The stories go on and on and mostly take place around Indian lake and Roscoe. Old green and red wool coats and pants were the dress. He had mittens and boots from Korea.
Hunting was done out of a army tent with a wood stove..............I'll miss that man but somehow I think he is with me, saw 3 shooter bucks last weekend.
That never happens...................
Zemm,
Sorry to hear about smokie. I'm sure you picked a nice spot by the in-laws to lay her to rest. Most of us have been in your situation, we all know it sucks.
Good luck this weekend-your journal is great!
The extra two weeks for bow have been a blessing. Gives me an extra weekend to hunt, saw a lot of deer. Learning a lot about early season hunting.
Next year we will have some youth hunters also. I like it.
Better luck next time. You gave it a good shot. Deerthug and Carbon said to look and listen to the crows. I found a buck I liver shot years ago by doing this. It didn't take more than 6 hours for those birds to start feasting on my deer. Its tough, that liver shot deer left blood for 40 yards and bedded twice. Found him 300 yards from the last blood sign. For once those damn birds were useful.
We are all rooting for ya but do as Buck says and call deer search. They are amazing and helped my Nephew find his deer last year. Sort of the same situation. He couldn't believe where this deer lay dead. He must of passed it a few times on his initial search. Good luck.
