I planted my corn last weekend because it was suppose to rain this week. I didn't realize how much rain we would be getting!!! Is it possible to have too much rain? I would hate for the corn seed to not germinate and I am not able to back up for a couple of weeks. Should I be worried???

2013 Prep work? What are you doing to prep for the 2013 Hunting Season?
Pav2704 replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
I had that same problem in one of my brassica food plots last year as well. I actually walked through the entire food plot pulling all of the weeds. Took me and a buddy about 2 hours but definately worth it! lol good luck in the new property. -
First batch of deer pictures for this year

Looks good! How big is that clover plot? Just curious as to how it holds up to the heavy grazing by all those does. -
Snapped this pic on the way home from petco today for Bella's yearly shots. She's completely pooped from playing with all the other dogs.

Had a really productive weekend. We brush hog all trails and began to reclaim some of the old apple trees. The previous owner let the property go for years and the areas around the apple trees have become over grown. I got the brush hog in there and hope to clean up around more of the trees later this summer. We also planted some corn and tilled two more plots which we will plant later this summer. Even got a chance to smoke some ribs. Couldn't be happier!! Well maybe with some rain.

Phade I totally get what you are saying about winter scouting for buck beds, however, I think that it not possible to always have bucks bed on your property, especially on smaller lots. My uncle and I scout his property in Carlisle every year. He has 33 acres and and is loaded with deer sign, most of which I believe to be does. Very rarely do we come across rubs or scrapes and hardly ever do we catch a buck on the trail cameras which are out being in June. However, his food plots which have been established for the last ten years are loaded with does and once November rolls around the bucks start coming out. He hasn't shot anything less than 90inches during the last four years. I love to be able to scout for buck beds, however, it's not always possible. Especially when dealing with smaller pieces of land. -
I just ordered the tree tubes, mats, and stakes from tubex. I've definately spent more money on the supplies than the actual trees. I still need to get some type of wire mesh or fencing before I plant. Lots of money for ten trees!!! As one of my hunting buddies says, "All this work to miss a doe!" lol

How do you tell the difference between a buck and doe bed without using a trail camera or actually bumping the deer? -

I definately see the benefits of scouting year round. You can definately see more sign later winter and early spring. However, on my 70 acres, I am always concerned about blowing deer out of their beds and creating unneccesary pressure. Any thoughts? -
Just finished cutting the grass and mulching the beds. Not sure why all my pics come in upside down?

Great season wooly, I am sure you will continue to add to it this year!

Hey John... How did the pine trees work out? I was hoping you would have a pic of them planted. -
I'm missing the bear and coyote as well. This past season I missed a coyote during bow season that was directly below my treestand...I still don't know how I missed??? I've never seen a bear in the woods by me and I checked the DEC website, I believe that they stated theres only one bear per square mile in 4f. I will be going to Maine this August and with any luck I'll bring one home!!

Wooly, I hope you got your information from a credited source!!! lol -
Great story wooly... It would be nice if anti-hunters were able to hear how you went out of your way to save this deer's life! I would of loved to been there. Keep us posted if you hear anything. By the way, when you look back, are you even going to remember the turkey? Lol

Incredible pictures! Can't wait to hear the rest of the story!

Great pic wooly... I especially like the box call in the picture. Was that the only call you used?

I was wondering when the best time to plant my chestnut trees? I ordered them bareroot and have since planted them into two gallon pots. They are sitting on my deck in the backyard and have all leaves. I bought grow tubes and the weed mat for them as well. I also plan on putting up some type of wire mesh so the deer dont destroy them. My concern about planting them next week is that I will only be able to water them every other week. They would have to rely on mother nature for the rest??? Would I be better off planting them in September?

How's the draw on winter rye? I was under the impression that deer weren't crazy about it? -
Very cool! I had shot a small basket six a few years ago that had a fresh wound from a pass through. Congrats!
