Putting some crushed gravel around might help cutting down on wind blowing underneath.

Cabin looks great! Lots of hard work and memories. Do you find that the floor is tough to heat since its on pillars?

80 Percent off Goldrush Apple Trees
Pav2704 replied to BigGuyNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I just purchased 10 chestnuts for 4.99 a piece. I got them for half price. The total bill was close to 65 bucks with shipping. I actually cancelled my order with realtree nursery. Realtree wanted the same price for only two trees. The only difference is that gourneys trees will be a little smaller. Not a big deal considering I'm going to keep them in my backyard for a year or so till they get big enough to plant upstate. -
Check with growalot... I believe that she uses them often.

Do they give you any insight on how to improve the habitat for the wildlife? I would like to get them to walk around my place and get some suggestions if that was the case.

Went to my usual spot to look for sheds and followed some tracks in the snow. No sheds but I found a bunch of rubs that still look real fresh. I didn't think that they still rub this late in the year???

Looks great! I really like the coloring on the antelope.

has anyone grown a few acres of switchgrass?
Pav2704 replied to Geno C's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I grew sorghum two years ago. I planted it mid June and it grew pretty quickly. The deer were all over it mid summer through early fall just before hunting season. It did provide great cover and I believe that whitetail institute advertised it has a great source of protein as well. The only downside that I found was that it was completely abandoned during hunting season. -
Grow I enjoy reading your posts... always learning something new to try at my place! Anybody know how to draw over google map?

NyAntler, your cabin is beautiful!!!! It almost looks like a Connestoga Log cabin kit that I have been researching online. Was it a kit or did you frame/build it to your own specifications? How big is it and many does it sleep?

My one concern is how close the food plots are to the road. I would plant some type of screening. It would prevent possible poaching and allow the deer to feel more comfortable while feeding in the food plots.

Plans set in motion so far...

I am planting: half acre each of rr corn and clover, quarter acre each of brassica and rasdishes. Deer absolutely destroyed the radishes last year. I also try and add at least four to five bags of powdered lime to each plot. I wish I could get it delivered but I don't have the access. I use my atv with the Kolpin attachments for all food plot work. Two years ago I used a reartine tiller which was WORK that I never want to do again! Grow... how many food plots do you have throughout your property? Are they all used as hunting plots or do you use some as feed plots? Split... how did you make out this year? I remember that your plots looked incredible! -
Thanks split... The area is about a half acre. I checked ph last year and it was close to 6.5. I planted brassica and turnips last year and they came up great. I usually add 5 bags of lime every year. Could I use the brush hog that I rent from agway to cut with or is that too harsh on the clover? I could bring my lawn mower up as a last resort.

I get just as excited planting as I do when hunting season starts!

Thanks guys... I thought April was too early. Best bet then is opening weekend for turkey.
-
I have never planted clover before so I was curious as to when you guys plant it? I thinking about using whitetail institutes brand. I have great success with many of their other seeds. They reccomend anytime between April 1 and June 1. That window seems awfully large? Is there an ideal planting date that you guys reccomend? Thanks

Great mount... I made a couple of wood plaques myself. Very cool!

lol... I do too! I can definately relate more to the doe harvests! I actually enjoy seeing those clips on the hunting channel compared too the big buck shots! As usual, great video!

I thought about having the farmer lease the land, however, I want to keep it standing throughout the year. I realize that corn has 0 nutritional value but I've definately seen an increase in deer sightings on my property once my neighbor harvests his corn. If you can afford to pay someone to plant it and leave it for the winter, I think you would be better off.

I had asked a farmer up the road from my property in schoharie county about putting in a little less then an acre of corn for this year. The area has been tilled and planted in previous years. I just don't have the equipment for corn. He said he would do it for $50 an hour and it would probably take him no more than three hours. I would also be supplying the corn. That price seemed more than fair to me. Figure his tractor, attachments, time, and gas. Money well spent !
