First I use the wind as a factor. Next is location between bedding and feeding areas as well as access to the stand with the least amount of disturbance. I do use trail cams, but I find by the time I am in a stand to hunt, the patterns have changed due to the change in feed such as cut corn fields they no longer utilize. I try to set my food plots to accommodate my stands rather than the other way around. In other words when I find a good stand place, I put in a plot to help the deer move the way I prefer. Another factor I take into consideration is cover for my stand. It needs to be well concealed.
