Don't forget to get Get out and VOTE Tuesday November 4th
mmkay replied to HuntingNY's topic in General Chit Chat
just voted, and been calling like minded friends and family to vote. trying to get 10 couch sitters to the polls -
the 1st few days on tate / city lands will be packed. get there early...REAL early, find the the farest thickest swamp or mtn lauriiel patch you can find. sit all day. your best chances sometime are around 10 when the other pumpkins leave for lunch...2pm when they return is also good. make sure you walk in and out in the dark with a good light on...most of them know deer don't carry flashlights. after the 1st week, the woods will empty out.

I've seen moose in Putnam...maybe a moose, but I'm thinking bear cubs f'ng around
-
I suspect they took him alive because they are better human beings than him. They would have to live with killing him for rest of their lives. "It's a hell of a thing; killin' a man. You take away everything he ever had and ever would have.” ― Clint Eastwood

Most of my guns were inherited for my father, uncles and grandfather. I regularly use the 1960’s marlin 35, a captured German 8 mm mauser converted to a sports rifle. On average, the guns I use the most are pushing 50 to 60 years old. I also have a bunch of new bows, but will go back to a 1980's hoyt from time to time.....it killed deer in the 80's and still get the job done
-
First-light - I think you're close. But I think its a large Raccoon (dark mask like eyes)...not a bobcat that the deer is confronting.
-
I would call the junk yard and get a used tank
-
sometime the bullet is deflected by the shoulder. best not try to shot thru the shoulder bone. I've found quartering way / front shoulder forward the best shot.....they are tough and can run MILES before dying

You’re actually late. You should have scouted as much property as you can get to in July/August. This said, if you only have limited time and haven’t already scouted and found a few bears, find 3 or more parcels within a hr drive (usually means state land). Start walking! You want to find sign (bear crap, berries, farmers field or other natural food. Once you found sign, look for the trails they travel…i.e.. Into a low area, swamp, evergreens, etc… set up on the trail from where they spend the day. They’ll move within a few hours of dark to feed. Bears are large greasy raccoons…nothing more. They’ll shit their pants and run from you if they know you are there or were there. DON’T let them know you were ever there! Control your scent, use a tree stand….ground blinds can spoke them…they’ll know it’s new to the area I’ve never been scared when I found bear crap. However, I’m always scared when I walk up on a cub and don’t know where mom is. also - if you get a shot, make sure the front leg is extended forward. If it is the shoulder bone won't block the shot into the vitals. bears are sometimes real hard to kill. Good luck

I called my brother, tell him I seen 3 bear. He says, I'm not working Thursday, mind if I hunt your spot?...it's state land, so i can't say no ( I wouldn't have). he sees same sow but it actually had 3 cubs. watches them for 30 minutes, until 300 pound boar comes in and scares the 3 cubs and mother away. 444 comes to life and bear hits the ground. it was a 3/4 mile in but near a good trail, he throws it in a wheel barrol and has it out of the woods and hanging in 2hrs. brothers suck!...he left my stand in the woods, so tomorrow I get to drive 1 hr to retrieve stand and look over a place that will have to wait until next year Oh well, there a 400lb bear on a mountain in Dutchess. big yellow tag (#32) in his ear....#32 watch out, i'm coming for you!!!

2014 HuntingNY Whitetail Challenge
mmkay replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2014 HuntingNY Whitetail Challenge
I'll play. doubt I'll shoot 4 deer. kinda think the winning score will be around 66 good luck folks -
if they are loaded with fat, they will hibernate early.
-
First-light - good advice. If you see a sow........you might not always see the cubs right away. You should make sure that its isn't lactating / nursing. if you ever had a dog that had puppies, you'll know what to look for. I've been on many maine guided trips and usually 1 or more nursing sows are shot each week. Pissing the guides off. The hunter might have gotten a nice bear, but he also left a few cubs to starve to death

I want out Saturday near port jervis. saw a sow with two cubs. let them walk. also saw a ton or deer and a few nice bucks...i'll be out again saturday maybe a boar or sow without cubs will walk by

I've gotten a few bears in my time....they are not that hard to get out to the woods. If you don't have an ATV the best option is to cape and quarter in the woods. Next best option is a heavy duty plastic sled http://www.amazon.com/Otter-Sport-Sled-Small-Black/dp/B002YBEG80 if ATV, caping and sled aren't your thing, a few guys with a cart or gurney. But one guy with a sled can get a bear out of the woods no problem

there are lost of bears in Putnam and Dutchess. try the NYC property in Kent ( seen 2 there 2 yrs ago) or state land off rt 22 (saw 8 last year...might have been the same ones on different dates). My brother got one bow season and his son got one shotgun last year. we saw about 8 in total last season...but they could have been the same bear. At least once a year one gets killed on 684 or rt 22. last one killed by a car was cub in patterson a few weeks back. there are plenty of bears...just hard to actually see them or pattern them.

There are a few groups looking into mountain lions in the northeast. None have proven they are here yet. They have gotten lots of reported sighting, but no real proof. They are tracking slighting and trying to compile info. If anyone is interested in them, check out the links below http://ctmountainlion.org/ http://trackincats.com/ Not saying they are here or if they are just occasional wanders, just passing a few links along to those that might be interested
-
thats clearly a Bumble, Bumble's bounce! hitting with a car would have no impact
-
if price is a consideration, they think twice. It will cost from $1000 to $5000 on the rug / mount and who does it for you if you have room in the freezer or a taxidermist that will take payments, then shoot it, you most likely won't see another on a non-paid (non-guided) hunt
-
shoot the bear....they are not that much harder to get out fo the woods than a large deer. Average bear you're going to see will be less than 250lbs. throw it on a cart, put it in a sled, or cape it in the woods. walk ot and come back with an atv if you need to. or call a buddy to help out Regardless, the bear would be shot, I would figure out what come next after the fact. I'm in my 50's and can still drag a sled with a beer / deer a few miles...might take an hour or so. if i'm in the woods further, I would just cape / quarter same way I would do a deer

The scope and gun are over 50 years old. The scope is starting to fog up internally. Its basically shot. I'm looking for a new 2x to 4x, but not really sure what scopes are worth looking at. so maybe I'll stay with a 2x. but any recomendation on manufacture or particular scope?
-
I have a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem it has a fixed 2x scope. been looking to add a new scope to it, any recomendations? var 2X to 4X maybe? Thanks
