  1. fyi I wouldn't post about cutting timber rattler s in half........ n New York State the Timber Rattlesnake is a threatened species on the Endangered Species List. There is a fine for handling or possessing a snake without a license
  2. There's agood place in green point brooklyn called Spritzenhaus....hispster beer garden. kinda pricy, but the beer are plentiful and good. if you're over 25 you'll be the oldest onethere and if you pay with cash as opposed to plastic they look at you like an odd ball. oh you also need an outragous beard
  3. does piels or schaefer....or genny screamers count?
  4. Lots of good state land and NYC land. check these places out. get in a few miles and get in early 4am or 5am...let the pumpkins push the deer to you or make friends with some landscapers.....pay them to find you a hunting spot...offer them a few $100 for each estate they get you on
  5. You're going to need to look a bit further north. Anyone with huntable land (large enough or ok with hunters) in Putnam either hunts it themselves or has it already leased out. There are lots of private clubs that already have most of the farms leased. I lost access to many farms because of this...can't blame the farmer...they need to pay their taxes and feed their families maybe you can outbid the private clubs, but I suspect you'll need to pay anywhere from 10K to 15K per season. I know that what the farmers in Dutchass get for 200 area club leases. lots of NYC money to compete with
  6. I used the term 'PET' very loosely. these folks think all swans are their their pets. I live on a lake... I know what the weekenders (NYC crowd) think of them The damm things are gaint tame DUMB ducks. no need to hunt them, you could just throw some bread out and then whack them with a bat if you wanted. or chop their head off with a machet. they don't run, they follow you, pecking at you for food. I had one fat one follow me every time I cut my lawn a few years back.. Neighbors dogs got that one. but again, I really don't care what happens. I don't hunt ducks, but I do fear no one will hunt duck in Southern NYS if swans start getting shot on TV or youtube
  7. Mike Good luck with the giant white duck hunt! They are actually good eating. 50+ years ago when we were poor and if it landed in the farms pond we used to eat one every now and then. But I still think it will get bad press and hurt duck hunters in the end. The duck hunters get haressed on Long island sound now. shooting somebodys 'pet' swan won't go over very well. Best.
  8. can you point out the false information? what's accurate? what isn't? thanks
  9. I would love to live there half a year....leave their in late Fall and return in Early Spring. Wife won't let me. when I'm done working, I'll sell everything and go down south, but I would perfer a second home up there...mainly for the fishing
  10. sits in trees – I wish that were true. But high taxes will not keep out the riff raff. The federal government will sue your town / county. It will force you to build housing for those that can't afford to live in your town. You'll end up paying even higher taxes. The fed for 3 decades fought and bankrupted Yonkers on this. They are trying to destroy parts of Westchester. Just google. Yonkers federal housing lawsuit or Westchester federal housing lawsuit. The fed pretends that these towns/ counties are discriminating. Anyone regardless of color can live in Westchester as long as you have the money to do so. Putnam / Duchess Counties are loaded with former WHITE Westchester residents that couldn’t afford to live in their original home towns. So in the end, taxes increase in part due to the federal governments meddling, residents are forced to leave, but only after having to foot the bill to build the riff raff new tax payer supplied homes.
  11. I love my state and nation, but recently I'm been feeling the total opposite of our first lady "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback." - First Lady Michelle Obama I kind of feel like......for the first time in my adult life I am sad for and ashamed of my state/country because it feels like the hope and change thing really messed a whole lot up.
  12. frankieh - are you a Brooklyn hipster? One of those 20 something’s with an outrageous beard? I heard you guys were getting into hunting. To learn how to hunt correctly, get a mentor. You might want to join a hunting club. You'll find one on Putnam or Dutchass that might be open. It will cost you some $’s and a bit of your time volunteering, but the old timers there will help you out
  13. here's an on-line link that might help you. http://www.arborday.org/trees/whattree/WhatTree.cfm?ItemID=E7A
  14. I picked up a Browning safe off of craigslist a few years back. The guy had a receipt that said he paid $2700. He was moving and couldn't take it. I got it for $650. If you don't mind used with a few dings or scratches, try looking for a used one. as an example, here's a safe that is listed on Craigslist. It looks worth the $350 selling price http://hartford.craigslist.org/spo/4460954260.html
  15. I believe you can legally donate it to a museum or school. But you would have to admit having it first. this said, I think it would be your father that is on the hook. you would just have to say, you cleaned out their home and found it. But I doubt anyone would put their eldery father in jeopardy, so as fasteddie said, burn it or get rid of it
  16. you mean for the gate..right? no I never did that. Its the weight of the gate thats the issue. At the time, trex didn't sell a gate kit...not sure if they do now. It needed to be beefed up with steel. I scraped the gate idea and ended up makeing a sliding gate on upped track (rail) and casters (kinda like an exposed pocket door)
  17. I've used trex. I think its the same type of stuff. It will fade a bit over time and mold seemed to like to grow on. Be careful with a power washer, as it will dig into it. For installation, it just as easy as any other decking. use predrill the stuff and use the correct screws. Also, i'm yet to find a good way at build a gate out of the stuff. gates seem to fall apart(won't hold the screws).
  18. One thing to watch with bayliners is the floor and stringers...they tend to rot. mostly likely not limited to bayliners, but I've seen it quite a bit. I site you might want to consider for research is: http://www.thesaltydog.com/default.aspx
  19. One night while surfing the net I came across this site. South Park was playing in the background and I thought Mr Mackey would be a good avatar. no meaning behind it. just needed something for a screen name...MMKAY
  20. My groups been looking at Alberta for a while. can you recomend a guide? also what did it run you? thanks
  21. I concur, hunting bear over bait you'll be lucky to even see a bear. the outfitter video's are often misleading. In a one week hunt in Canada (NB) or Maine, a hunter is lucky to see 1 bear for perhaps 5 to 10 seconds. the bears often hit the baits at night after legal shooting times. In Maine the other choice is hunting with hounds. Although it can be fun, you'll need to be a younger man or an old fart in good shape. I've been hunting bear for years, gotten close to a dozen. Until recently I would have said it was near impossible to get one without dogs or bait. But my brother and one of his kids both got one last season (1 bow / 1 gun) in Dutchess during deer season... They both are very experienced bear hunters, but the bears were local stupid trashing /dumpster eating bears...very easy to pattern. so the trash and dumpsters although a 1/4 mile away were in fact bait....just needed to post up the trail a bit and wait for the large black greasy raccoons to walk by
  22. Once or twice a year, I rent table at large area flea markets. I've always had success selling deer, fish and bird mounts. As a hobby, I hit tag sales and buy stuff to resell. I usally buy a mount for around $15 to $35 (estate sales just about give them away) and then resell them to NYC folks for for a few hundred. As others said, I doubt a hunter will buy them. But a person lookingt o decorate their weekend place or gentleman farm will jump take them.
  23. Mike I have no idea if a permit is needed to chase geese with a dog. but if anyone is interested in learning more the following url contains suggestions from NYSDEC http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/geeseproblem.pdf
