Thanks for the responses

I understand your point Doc and obviously I will bear some of that risk since I prefer bow hunting. My question was, for those that have hunted both ways, was there a significant difference in recovery rates.

1975 Bear Kodiak Magnum 55/28 with Easton traditional axis 400s. Shooting with a glove 3 under.

Reminds me of golf already with the good and bad shooting days so far. I did overcome that in golf too by most people's standards so I will just stick with it and see how consistent I can become. Having a 20yd range in my basement makes daily practice easy

So I have started to invest a fair amount of time in shooting a recurve with the hope that I will be sufficiently proficient to bring it into the woods this year. I learned to shoot with a compound and never picked up a recurve until late last year, but the thought of hunting with a traditional bow with no rests, sights, etc. and shooting instinctively is appealing. As a result, I am practicing a lot. That said, I have a lingering question in the back of my mind about how bad I may kick myself if I wound one or miss, knowing that no matter how proficient with the recurve I become, I am reducing the risk of a bad shot by staying with the compound. Trust me, if I do hunt with the recurve, it won't be in the woods with me until I have great confidence that I will hit where I aim - it wont be a shoot and hope scenario. But the reality is, I will always be less likely to make a bad shot with a compound - I think. Soooo, for you folks that have hunted both ways, what is your honest recovery rates on shots with a recurve vs. compound? Does it differ significantly? Presumably, at a minimum, it limits your shot distance, but I am good with that.

Not really but I heard it was a lot. It was a friend of a friend.

Not sure this is true all of the time Culver. For example, I shot two doe on nuisance tags last year on a 90 acre bean field was completely decimated by the deer. This farmer could open up his land, but the deer all filtered into the field from adjacent neighbor lands (woodlots). There is no way he could handle the nuisance problem by simply allowing more to hunt his land or field (it would have to be a community effort). That said, killing 5 or 10 or even 20 of the 50 plus deer that browsed on his beans nightly couldn't save his crop either. I was told it was a $200k loss. Seeing that type of damage made me realize why DEC allows nuisance tags in the first place.

some healthy critters there. -
A heavy rubber stall mat from tractor supply will do it. May even work on a higher poundage bow.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver Arrested.
moog5050 replied to grampy's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The charges are serious and I doubt a slap on the wrist will be the result. The US Atty will make an example of him, IMHO. He is not the only NY legislator with these types of arrangements, including both Democrats and Republicans. The fall out will be interesting. I guarantee many others are squirming right now. -
Geeze Pygmy, I thought you would recommend the leupold fixed 4x. Wouldn't that be perfect for a shorter range mountain gun?

I found that by going with a bigger boot, one pair of sock liners and one pair of carhartt arctic wool socks, I was much warmer than when I tried to layer two or three pair of heavy socks in a tighter boot. The layers of air really helped. I never had cold feet this year and, as a side benefit, the boots were more comfortable.

Just in case anyone is looking, this site has some steals on Brunton Binos. Only catch, Brunton stopped production and will not honor the lifetime warranty for binos purchased after 8/11/14. That said, they have some very high end binos with great reviews for 1/5 of the normal price. Just wanted to pass it on. Probably worth the risk of no warranty at these prices. http://www.botach.com/brunton-f-xn105-camo-m-epoch-v-2-10-5x43-binoculars-mossy-oak/

You are breaking down muscle every time you work out and it will causes soreness. The more your body adapts, the less sore you will be from working out, but even with 29 years of constant heavy training, I am still sore up to 2 days after training (Usually more sore on day 2). In fact, if I am not sore, it tells me that I need to change up my workouts because the body has adapted and I am not really breaking down the muscle such that it needs to rebuild stronger. Naproxen (aleve), lots of water and potassium help. Be sure you are getting sufficient protein to allow the muscle to rebuild. Keep at it Grow, best thing you can do to slow down aging.

Good luck Geno. I wish I had applied. Should be fun.

Just get a really long corkscrew and start turning. Should tighten up those groups. -
If they stopped all Buck hunting.
moog5050 replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
So generally Phade can we assume you are happy? If bucks were off limits, some of my stand locations would change, the extra effort to try to kill the big ones would be eliminated, but I would still hunt. I like venison, the quiet of being in a stand, and the sunrises/sunsets. I would also carry a good camera because what else can you do when you see Mr. Big. Maybe wooly could give wildlife photography classes. Lastly, I can almost guarantee you that I would spend more time trying to become proficient with a stick bow to increase the challenge of killing a doe. -
Has your family had any success? Good luck and enjoy it.

Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.
moog5050 replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
If you have to wait for a 12pt before shooting, not many of us will be shooting many bucks. In the last 3 years we have only had one buck with 12pts or more (17) even on cam and we have pretty good property to hunt. This is the TX AR: Special Antler RestrictionsAntler restrictions apply only in certain counties (see County Listings). In these counties, the bag limit is two legal bucks, but only ONE may have an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. In these counties, a legal buck deer is defined as having:a hardened antler protruding through the skin AND; at least one unbranched antler; OR an inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater (does not apply to a buck that has an unbranched antler). In these counties it is unlawful to take more than one buck with an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck with ears in the alert position (see illustration). Does not apply on Level 2 or 3 MLDP properties. Definition of a point: A point is a projection that extends at least one inch from the edge of a main beam or another tine. The tip of the main beam is also a point. -
OK - I am officially jealous of the areas where Sam hunts.

That's a smart deer. She knows you won't kill a pet. Made friends with the enemy and now is safe. lol If deer were inclined to walk up to humans and be friendly like a dog, who would want to hunt them.
