Do you remove sling while actual hunting
ATbuckhunter replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Hunting
I have two slings, one that I keep on my deer rifle and I've never taken off since it's been on and the other I swap back and forth from my shotgun and .22 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Well did some scouting at my grandparents property and found some great sign. Best sign on the property for deer was 15 yards behind my tree stand. Also found 2 of the biggest rubs I've ever found and some huge tracks. Reference is my size 12 boot print. Heard the neighbor got a 9 point...hope it wasn't the big guy I saw during bow season. First and second pic is right next to my stand while the others are rubs and turkey tracks Also found some great turkey sign, but I knew they were there all season...just didn't want to give up deer hunting to go after a turkey. Awesome! Which one do the deer like the most? -
Lose or break any gear in the field this year?
ATbuckhunter replied to goosifer's topic in Deer Hunting
So far all I know is one of the string suppressors on my Mathew's bow cracked, but from what i was told, it was normal ad got a replacement part coming in the mail. -
Now your talking! Now you'll really get to enjoy bow season.

Maybe you can try to stop them from coming into the clover by using an electric fence. Not sure if it will be allowed next year, but eventually it'll be allowed all bow season. Like it or hate it, its bound to happen.

So what's on the agenda now that hunting is over
ATbuckhunter replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
Ill be focusing more on class and getting things ready for next year. My family is considering putting an offer on a property so in January ill be meeting with the guy and discuss numbers. Really would be a dream to have a property. Started scouting already for next season. Ill also hopefully getting into fly fishing this spring so maybe ill do a bit of that. -
Well you and your father definitely had good seasons. 2 bucks down on your own property and your guys saw quite a few good bucks. Hopefully that continues to next year.

Sitting in the landowners smoke shack today instead of being out in the rain. Only 80 yards from where I shot that doe 2 weeks ago. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I like to pass the mature does and go for the 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 year old deer. This year I took a nice old doe, but she was completely alone with no others behind her. The way I see it, your taking out a good parent if you take out an old doe. Im not looking to do population control so I like to have a doe that is spitting out 2 fawn a year. I also think the younger ones taste better so Ill enjoy them more.

Yesterday I dragged my dads last deer
ATbuckhunter replied to Buckmaster7600's topic in Deer Hunting
Sorry to hear about your loss! At least he went while doing what he loved and surrounded by his two sons. Don't think any father could ask for more. -
I think you should do some coyote hunting this year! And happy birthday to your father!

Have you ever had a miss you couldn't explain?
ATbuckhunter replied to ApexerER's topic in Deer Hunting
So far I haven't had one I can't explain. Most of the time it was 100 percent me but one time my scope must have been knocked when I wasn't aware because my scope was way off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Maybe he gets a shot at him tomorrow morning.

My buddy smoked a giant yesterday afternoon.

Nice deer! -
best/worst game animal you've eaten?
ATbuckhunter replied to rachunter's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Well hard to narrow the best since each time i eat venison this year, its gets better and better. The weirdest was probably alligator tail or cows foot. Both of those were amazing. The worst is easy, before i knew any better we used to eat the shank like a steak. Talk about tough...dont think we ever finished one shank before we started boiling them of 3 hours. As of now I really only hunt deer and Turkey so I haven't tried to many types of animal. Always up for it though. -
I use 2 cheap knives i got from deer and deer hunting when I renewed my subscription and a fixed field and stream knife that can swap between skinning, gutting and a meat saw. I would love to get a good quality knife, but i'm bad at sharpening and the worksharp sharpener I use, always seems to dull the tip.

Id say 130's for sure and maybe possibly creeping to 140.

Stoneam2006 2016 hunt and trap
ATbuckhunter replied to stoneam2006's topic in Member Hunting Journals
Good for him for sticking with it this late in the season! -
That's what I thought, but he loves it that way so who am I to say anything about it. As long as its enjoyed by someone, its fine by me.
-
Not how I would butcher it, but if he likes it then why not. I know someone who grinds literally the whole deer...backstraps and tenderloin included.
-
Well in theory is should be the same as letting it hang for the second question, but im not sure about the plastic on the first questions. Should be fine, but ive never heard of anyone doing it. Congrats on the deer btw. Have any pics?
