  1. For those gun hunters getting discouraged ,guy on the farm just had 5 bucks come out into field,he shot the biggest one, dropped in its tracks. While waiting for his hunting partner a bigger one came out and stood over his dead one . 6 bucks mid day late in the season in a wide open field. It's not over until you quit, keep hunting!
  2. I know the feeling but don't give up on gun season ! Mine was also a bit slow , but deer my last 3 sits, young bucks and doe though . So tue I added another doe to the freezer. Now with neighboring corn finally cut and less guys out I'm waiting for a decent buck to move in our cover .
  3. Work with the dec officers around you . I know 2 and have talked to a third in my area . We've had poaching issues , they have changed their work hours to nights to catch them. . Set up the robo deer , parked on hills looking for lights , asked me for hair off poached bucks to compair DNA against saws and knives of known poachers . So work work with them , clue them in .or wait a few months and handle it your own way, something I often prefer ....
  4. To me an outdoors mans knife is a loyal companion that he has shared many of life adventures with. It cleaned his game, split kindling for the fire, built shelters ,carved a tent stake, offered a degree of comfort while camped in a remorse area. Then gets passéd on to the next generation. I have a knife in my safe that gutted my first buck and many others ,canoed the Yukon river with me,hiked canyons inArizona , rode on my side as rode motorcycles up and down the east coast camping on the side of the rode. It's big heavy, razor sharp and made of natural materials. Simply holding it brings memories from canoe trips in true wilderness ,gutting bucks, pulling it on two guys with baseball bats and a machete to a name a few, I'm not sure a cheap disposable thingie would have held up, or held such memories .
  5. I own Lone Wolf climbing sticks and love them ,Muddys as well but much more bulky to pack in. Back when I started bow hunting never knew of screw in steps, made my own climbing blocks . Chunks of 2x4 with rope passed through a drilled hole. Easy to pack in , set up and use. Basically free as well.
  6. Wow that's some cheap land . It's closer to 4 grand an acre around me and one guy is asking 190k for his 30 acres of rec. land . Of course it's just sitting there , while most land never even gets listed. I would also try to conceal that you are the one making the offer at least as long as possible,if I knew the neighbor wanted my land to add on to his, well that's a buyer who can't just go 5 miles away and pick up a differant piece so there would not be much movement in my price. Our 120 acres is on 3 roads with a few houses here and there butting up to a piece of it. Not a year goes by someone does not inquire about us developing it as it's headed our way. They all want to preserve their 1 or 2 acre lot with a buffer, well I'll give them right of first refusal , but they'll have to beat the developers price . Maybe one day Unicef will get in the land business.....
  7. Got any high end production, mid techs or customs ? I'd pay a fair price.
  8. Please except my apologies , I did not mean to make it an argument . Just sharing that I went through similar struggles . I recommend everyone own land as part of their portfolio . It's been a nothing but great for us. The rent from the farmers pays our taxes and gives us small 4 figure profit, the real sweet spot is a handful of large farm families fighting over every acre in the area ! I wish the same for you. And many big bucks!
  9. I get it,we're hunters ! But he's already saying, 1. Money is tight 2. Taxes are high 3. He has two young children and he already owns 24 acres he can hunt . How much does he fund his retirement or kids 529? His business I know, but speaking from a purely financial aspect it's not a move I'd be very comfortable recommending . This is why one of my advisors is big on pre nups for women, men buy mostly rapidly deprecating assets, boats,Harley's ,big 4x4 trucks. Then want half of the wife's 401k when divorce comes . Altough the land may go up,but frankly it's sounds as if it has little value other then recreational . Good luck .
  10. We own a bit of land, although I don't hunt it much,we rent it to the farm i do,hunt . It's nice to have land as an asset ,along with 401k,pension ,Roth and the like, and farm land in my part of Ontario county never even gets listed its so hot a market,so the price keeps a rising! You'll most likely never have the chance to pick up land right next to yours again . Now I've always dreamed of a camp, but we chose to pay for our kids college instead. We're not big fans of debt for us or our kids.
  11. Did lasik a couple years back,went from 20/200 to 20/15 .
  12. I'd love to shave my whole body to tell the truth, even though I have fine blond hair that stuff on my back is a pain sometimes. As far as shaving in general ,I use a double edge, with a pure silver tip badger brush, along with a quality shaving soap and often a pre shave oil followed by a after shave balm,I prefer Crabtree and Evilyn . HINT with Christmas coming..... So no razor burn here!
  13. They serve a purpose I guess. Myself I pride myself on being decent on the lost art of knife sharpening . Here is one of my Syderco Enduras after a light pass across my leg,and it's seen a bit of use since I last touched her up.
  14. I feel your pain, but this is nothing new . 20 years ago we had a group ce down from Canada , a local would moose hunt up there with them. , they would come here for deer. They bought slugs by the case, but not hunting Lic. Trespassed on everyone's posted land. Oh to make it really fun they did drives I'm a circle ! They would surround a field , woods and tighten the circle till deer ran out ,swing and unload . I've been caught in a Couple of those ..... They no longer come down , I think ever since they needed to have A lic to enter the US.
  15. The year of the small buck continues ..
  16. Nomad

    Growths?

I have little need for 3 knees, but iid eat that deer raw if it gave me 16 balls!
  17. Now I may have to,it's been tradition for me too,but I have to pick up,my 92y/o Mom at 12:30 . It'll be a rush to hunt get home shower change and out the door by 11:45 . We'll see how tomorrow and Tue. Hunts go...
  18. My guess is that it was straight on and he had a bow.
  19. Hunt it , if there are houses around then he's ran Into to people many times before . I've killed a deer or two in the suburbs , listening to kids playing, lawn mowers, watching dog walkers,30 yards from a house..... Good hunting!
  20. I,often say the same thing,I'll have one chance a year at a great buck. This year was in bow, would have been my biggest buck, ever. 15 yards broadside had no idea I was there either. But to many little, branches in the way.oh I looked hard for a window I was happy with. He walked off I let the bow down,I'm sure many would have left 'er rip ,I could not . As I always do jest before getting down I shot a field point for practice, this day I picked a spot he stood ,hit the leaf on the ground I picked, but a leaf is not a deer i have no regrets passing that shot on the deer.
  21. I've hunted out off wall tents in Montana , deep snow and lows of 6 ...... I could not tell you what we ate, took so much work just to get back to,camp, change clothes ,get the wood stove going eating was important but secondary , certainly did not want to spend a lot of time making it. I'd go the chili route,in other words stuff you can just heat up.
  22. Monroe county special opps collapse team and Rochester Fire Dept. Rescue 11 and Truck 10 headed to Buffalo to help out with building / roof collapse .
  23. I believe my dept is sending out structural collapse team your way to help out.
  24. I thought the county put a stop to that because of the travel ban ? Personally if they would cancel all NFL games for the rest of my life I'd be pretty happy or just get it off tv.
  25. Don't know for sure, 30 something.
