  1. I feed them to the boys every year...but I never cook them..cooking I understand makes them brittle?...any ways they are 12 years old and that's getting up there for a big shepherd
  2. Well the guys had a great afternoon weather wise...but saw no deer in range and not in brush...I on the other had saw no deer...heard 3 shot behind the house and it poured all afternoon ...It was miserable out there...Though I was able to sit in Rivers blind ,coat off and reading the NYODN I picked up on the way out......So much for no wind...Think the no wind days could just a few times, coincide with a rain, sleet, blizzard free day
  3. Sorry I'm with phillyfan on this one...that read does not sound accidental...time will tell. Sad and sickening all the way around and condolences to the Family. Lets see this is for Sandy Creek NY No orange was mentioned and a scoped rifle???? Ya I have some fair hearing, but I do not hear deer at 100 yards in less they are plowing through the woods...
  4. Prayers go out to all involved, family and friends This season hasn't been the safest..too sad.
  5. Wow , that was just so enjoyable! Thank you for sharing your talent.
  6. What you still sleeping?...I am not sure I'm going out this am...I just got in from driving the Gator around the property picking up wood for Mr B to take to camp... Apparently their wood pile had a problem during the summer, Ya, I know but, I asked and offered several times over the last couple of days...and all summer when I was cutting it and was foolish to ask again this morning..."Well if you really want to ,it would save us from having actually cut it at camp" ...Lord I do love him......needless to say...probably wouldn't be very productive to hunt right now anyways...and I haven't had time to shower yet...but he has a full dumper of wood to take, all cut just the right size...So they can all just go hunt and not worry about cutting or splitting wood. Maybe I'll take the cross bow to the swamp.Hope you all had a great time with family and friends yesterday...We certainly did...Good Luck ,be safe....
  7. The DEC did terrible in their efforts to produce bigger bucks ,if Charlie NY link is all the effort they put into is... UN like other states management efforts where. Live deer video comparison and discussions are made. I also think implementing the x bow in to just the last 2 weeks of bow season was counter productive to the efforts of producing mature buck. Your into the rut then...doe have all ready started to go nocturnal. Guys have that either or tag ,that have been gun hunters all their lives. They usually only take one buck because late season hunting is usually cold ,snowy, and near the holidays...So of course they will be out their trying to tag a buck before regular season . With a greater chance at seeing a young roaming buck over a doe anyways. Don't think so?...Well let the harvest records tell if I am right or not
  8. Crunchy walking out there ...thin layer of ice...no deer and there was still at least one guy still around last night...heard shots though..... Happy Thanksgiving...Remember even in hard times we all can find at least one thing to be thankful for ...hold on to that until better times arrive...Bless you all...
  9. Well that's an interesting statement..for as you all know I live in such an area and add to that nearly everyone hunts or they have hunters...they also tend to shoot 11/2 and 21/2 yr. Olds...me included, yet you've seen my cam pics and we have seen mature buck roaming every year. AR's and spreads are not efficient for the purpose intended. Especially when you have areas of 1 1/2 year old 8pts. And wide racked young and genetics of high narrow racked older bucks. There is just one way to identify older bucks and that is knowing how to identify body size. If you must try by rack then you need to identify good mass not just points.
  10. Our weather station says we have zero temperature and zero wind. Not that the temp is 0 degrees...just zero, nada, we have no temperature..lol...I stuck my head out the door and the wind is whipping ,wind chimes are singing and It feels like the low 20's.......will see where I'm going once out the door...Good Luck everyone....
  11. I'll be out for a while before leaving for daughters in Big Flats...
  12. No I don't....I happened to be in the local gun shop and looking through the pictures for the bow contest. I had just told the owners wife about my encounter with the buck. That it caused me to go to the Dr' s because the buck fever was so intense..complete loss of control..Well I had to go on high blood pressure meds! So I see the picture of the guy with the buck..I said this was taken in my town...She said how did you know...It's the buck..Kudo's to him for shooting it a week later about 3 miles from the stand I was in. Just an amazing animal.
  13. Spread minimum..Ya that's a brilliant plan...The guy who was lucky enough to shoot the 11 pointer with 11 5/8s brow tines, that nearly caused me to pass out when so spotted him 10 yrds away.unable to stand or breath right, let alone shoot. Well that guy would have loved this spread restriction idea....When he would have had to pass that very mature buck who's rack was in side his ears, but up to the guys waist when he STOOD behind it holding it 's G1s for a picture
  14. OK...First what a great hour and 41 mins....I went to the morning stand and watched deer just piling out of the neighbors section of gully to feed across the farm field in my general direction but several hundred yards down...16 in all..I had walked in both morning and tonight with a drag soaked in buck bomb. I had sprayed one boot as well. At 4 pm I look up to see a 5 point nose down walking my path...He walked past the drag I hung and right to my ladder...sniffed the rungs..looked around and then up at me. I stayed perfectly still with my eyes half shut...after a few minutes he continued on up into the other neighbors sanctuary... I sat back very pleased and though I hope his Dad does that..I watched the deer in the field a bit and looked back at my trail. There is another buck! I saw a flash of white, and my hopes soared. It was a nice wide 6 but you could tell young no mass. He has the same rack configuration as huge 6. Well doesn't he do the exact same thing as the 5 pt. It was like a rerun. So much fun, but I had settled in archery for meat ,I'm not settling now. Which brings me to what I did next...some of you may say that's mean, but you don't live here. Thanksgiving is the brown down crowd here...they have been filing in all afternoon...This weekend they will fill theirs, the wife's, the kids buck tags if possible..The wives and kids that don't hunt...This was a really nice little 6pt that I want to live ...It was 1 min. to close when he finally picked up the other bucks scent and went past the stand on it's trail..as soon as he did I fired a round into a stump behind him...He dug in after ducking and I swear he was clearing 30 feet a leap....He is now one educated buck and I hope Leary enough to stay hidden a while during daylight. BTW...I have now passed 2 5pts and a 6 pt. at the base of the ladder this year...should have been hunting it all along! Buck bomb works... CONGRATS ON THE DEER EVERYONE..Way to go Eddie, see now your on a roll!
  15. Again Congrats everyone...I did chores and figured seeing I always take my gun to feed the chickens during season I'd do a slow stalk and clean a couple of blinds...They really did a lot of shooting out back and I have to say...there are absolutely no tracks behind the house on top...I walked half way down the hill towards the swamp and cleared my 16 ft wooden stand with the wrap around and rails also cleared the deck on the first cardboard blind... There is a bedding area between the 16ft stand and a ladder stand I have overlooking the ridge...these are along one of our streams...the sun sparkling off the water and the sound of the small falls was very relaxing. I missed the young deer that snuck out of the bedding area over to the new neighbors ...I really wasn't being as quiet as I should have been cleaning that stand...It was snow, leafs and branches Those were the only tracks seen.. found some rubs but doubt the deer that made them are alive any more...All in all...even having to walk back up the hill, had to side step most of the way down...same coming back up.... I feel like a Mountain Goat... I had a good little hunt... More chores then back to the stand I was in this morning.
  16. Congrats on the deer...I'm back in for A BIT ...Chores, everyone needs hot water in this weather. I had a great morning ...I pushed at least two going in and at 7am I looked across the farm field to see 2 of the big boys crossing the field headed in our property direction...problem was, headed away and were a little over a 1/4 from me. Now I have to tell you I need my glasses for real long distances...not wearing them and I could still see the size and even the rack on one and the nose doe "dogging" the other was doing...then he came back across chasing 2 doe before trotting off after the biggest buck...doe fed across toward me then disappeared... Just a huge doe and a 4 or 6 point walked past cams. I did pull cam pics of my constant companion Angel...She was out checking tracks and doing cam cards with me the other day. She hates hunting season,my leaving the house without her...
  17. Back at it this morning...hoping the tracks I Found prove fruitful. Wind has died and 27 degrees. The wind is good for the tree I plan on going to. Good luck guys/gals.
  18. No need for sorry' s Paula...I knew what it read like, but was in a rush..headed out door now and needed to shower. Though note what that comment brought out of its dark little hole, to like what I'm sure was a perceived slam
  19. Other than my not caring about Capitals and my using those ....you guys hate .....what did that mean?
  20. I wear my pants tucked into my socks 24/7/365 days a year on the property...but I came home from my last blind sit(doghouse in the grapes) and took off all outer wear on porch ...it was during that freezing rain before the storm....I was at the computer for an hour when I feel something scurrying across the area between my thumb and index finger...Well I immediately snatched it up pinching hard...When it tried to recover I had slid it across desk top grabbed the pen and crushed it..yep a tick..and I have to say bigger than I expected. I swear I've been itching and feeling crawlies ever since...that's 2x's in the last month and I've never had problems before...and never had engorged ticks on the deer like this years buck ...It's just nasty!
  21. Just took a walk around property line...So deep snow knees a tad bothered...but I now know I have been hunting the wrong areas all along!...one area looks like the Los Angeles highway system....old fresh big bigger and small. no cam sets there due to trespassing....Anyways I now know where to concentrate. Nothing on cams but one fawn today and this guy on the 18th 6 yards from a blind...hope he stayed in hiding...
  22. I don't know...the last near us he was shot by another drive member and died screaming he didn't want to die...went through his upper arm into chest from what on scene ppl told me... Mercy flighted out ...there's along story that started in the morning on that one..it all happened when they came back from having lunch at the Legion I believe. I Distinctly recall the land owner /neighbor's phone call before it happened..He said they couldn't meet me to track morning deer on my land, because they went out to lunch . Even though his wife had made a perfectly good lunch for them....one hour later the guy was shot as another neighbor and I were talking at my mail box ...we heard the sirens go off. He was there asking for tracking permission...I remember telling him they probably shot each other, due to what I'd witnessed that morning. Or neighbor had a heart attack. Well he actually did after witnessing what happened on his land to a friend by his brother.
  23. They do not refer to hunting ACCIDENTS as suspicious...they never called the last one here suspicious.
  24. Ya Paula...just go to a garage sale or salvation army, buy a sleeping bag and cut /sew arm holes and sew shoulders in the top in it..That's how it was invented in the first place!
