WTB: LH varmint rifle in .223

What are your plans for this rifle......Walking varminter? Bi-pod gun? Sandbags from a sturdy rest? Heavy barrel a must? What are you hunting? -
Great job on the survey Mike, I like most of the results but can go with the flow......... I see that the NY Dove Hunters are looking to do some advertising, good deal. Lets see if we can get some funds generated here. Is this link good? http://nydovehunting.weebly.com/help-fund-advertising-for-ny-dove-hunting.html

Call Ron the Barrel Man, he WILL have the answer.

The roads are a mess here; all iced over BAD.

Another thing........I would think that the used gun or used barrel market would be at an all time high right now. There has to be plenty of guys looking to get out of the slug shooting business with the advent of rifle legalization. I'd scour your LGS (local gun store) market and see what they have.

I'll add more to this in a bit but you might give this fellow a call, barrels are his thing: We Be Barrels PO Box 307 Batavia NY 14021 585-343-0197 I have no skin in it, he is just a good guy with mucho barrels! Oh yea, his name is Ron.

I bet you'll be an expert AFTER you do your first one. How expensive would it be if you had to do it twice? Or three times............... What vehicle is it for? Don't the Amish do even THAT?

I'd say more monkeyed up than handicapped. I do have a couple CF righty bolts too; a Rem 722 257 Roberts, Sako 22-250 heavy barrel and my son's Tikka 223. I can (and I know you're NOT surprised) go both ways, easily.

Mostly "catch", I haven't mastered the "release" yet.

I did a little snowshoeing down in Arcade last Saturday. There is plenty of snow there and they always get a ton anyway but like others have said, the combination of deep snow and super cold temps sure don't look good. I could see some areas where they had dug down deeper than I've ever seen before. Much evidence of browsing on pine needles and branches could be seen too. I did see two deer, they were only about 75 yards away and stood for probably 20 seconds before chugging off in the snow. The trails, tracks and deep beds were numerous........... I saw no place where they had dug deep enough to get to open ground for feeding, just bedding.

Center gun is a lefty I see, what ya got there?

Things don't look to adverse in the picture you posted above with your Kimber. Just a fluke day or was a big storm headed your way?..................................... A nice wood stocked blued beauty would have been the cats azz that day I'd bet. Don't get too worked up, I sure enjoy those blue bird days too and I've been known to kill from a hut. Not often, just twice I think. Even this year........

No gutters? Since when is that a good idea? -
Spend a week in a tent under adverse conditions, it'll test you! You can't do a terrific job and your sure as heck aren't pulling the barreled action out of the high luster stock but with some care they'll be A-OK.

I have to type faster I see...............

I wouldn't fret the game seeing those bead blasted stainless barrels to much, they might spot your blaze orange first................ Highly polished blued barrels could spook game though. Don't forget they can smell really good.

Anybody in the counties that have recently gone to legalizing center-fire rifles ever have a stainless barreled shotgun? How about synthetic stocks? I'm sure there are a handful out there but I doubt many people used them....... My Ithaca DS 87 II (or whatever that darned thing is called!) with its blued (GASP) barrel and wood (EGADS) stock & fore end still look pretty good after 28 years. I haven't used it much the last 10 years, the ML got 98% of the face time but that shotgun saw some seriously horrid days in the field. I'm sure every avid deer hunter (the guys that hunt hard AFTER opening day) has had their guns completely soaked for hours and hours. Then how long does it sit in the back seat of the car on the ride home or in the gun rack at camp?? Sure you wipe it down eventually or even break it down and give it a once over but it can be tough getting them all dried out completely. Then of course you wipe it down with scent-free, right? Blued/wood stocked guns can be kept just fine with a little care, heck my friend and I spent 11 nights in a 4 man tent while bear hunting Yakutat Alaska in 1997. During those 10 days and 11 nights we had (officially) 11" of rain. My wood stocked & blue barrel Sako 375H&H got as much love as I could give it under those conditions and I promise you will not find a spec of rust anywhere today. The stock is perfect as are the Sako rings and Leupold 1.5-5 scope. One thing though, my buddy and I never fired a shot during that hunt so I can't say if the stock curved left, right or stayed on the money, that we'll never know! The last time I shot it it was right on the money. All that said...........I love my synthetic stocked guns more than the wood ones. I only have three stainless barrels, one on my NULA 300WSM and the other two on custom guns I had built. 7 of my guns have synthetic stocks and I really like them. One thing I do know is that Melvin Forbes has always preferred chrome moly actions and barrels for the guns he builds, but they are available with stainless barrels. Your stuck with the CM actions..............

Ice Dam............................................
Lawdwaz replied to Lawdwaz's topic in General Chit Chat
I've heard of people putting rock salt in panty hose and laying them up on the ice dams. I've also heard of people putting heat to them..........followed by fire truck and news crew. Not a whole lot to be done now, the ice mass is formed and Ma Nature will probably have to take care of it. You can shovel the snow off now but getting rid of the ice will be a hummer............ -
Boy, if you don't have any leaks consider yourself DAMN lucky. I know a bunch of people who are having serious trouble with them right now. This morning my BIL called and told me that a piece of income property he owns in a condo association (1st floor) was getting water from the neighbor above. After much trouble he finally got the owner to come home and open the unit to see WTH was leaking. By the amount of water he figured it had to be a frozen pipe, cracked toilet tank or some other deal. I told him Ice Dam......he said no way, too much water. Yea, ice dam it was. Funny thing though, no water was visible from anywhere in the 2nd floor condo. You had to look in their furnace room (right inside the unit) and then you could see the water pouring in! There are houses around here with freaking icebergs hanging off of them big enough to sink a battle ship........they have to weigh 200-300 lbs easy, maybe more. With the sun and warmer temps they are going to start pouring water into houses and businesses all over the place. In all my years in the restoration field I never saw it this bad. Prayers sent to all affected..............

I'm not too big on yellow mustard but I'd try it ASAP if I had continual bad cramps. Funny thing, during a weekend hunting down in Canadice in November I went to get out of bed around 3am for a johnny break, when I went to swing my left leg down I had about the most awful pain I've ever experienced in my life! It felt like I tore something in the back of my thigh and it was unbelievable. I grabbed at my thigh and quickly laid back down, bending my foot towards me and trying to do something..... After about only 30 seconds or so it started to ease up. It might not seem long but it scared me enough that I was thinking we might have to call 911. In about a minute I felt confident to try and stand up. I limped to the john and was just shaking my head, wondering WTH just happened. It must have just been some kind of strange muscle cramp but it sure as heck felt like something tore badly. To this day, occasionally I'll feel a slight twinge in the same place when getting out of bed in the morning. I've had plenty of calf and foot cramps but the pain I felt in November was unprecedented. Here's to the Weber's Yellow Mustard!!
