I've killed only one deer with the Berger VLD. 6.5mm 100 grain? I forget what grain weight and I'm way too tired to go down to the basement & check. It worked fine, expansion was more than adequate. About 200 yards out of my XP 100R. Mine were the hunting version. John Barsness (writer & author) shot a pile of game with them in Australia or New Zealand and had terrific results.

You would hope that common sense would prevail with both the sportsman and City leaders. Maybe limiting chamberings to 243Win. or less would be the answer. (we all know they aren't very effective outside of 100 yards or so)

Crazy law. 260Rem. at work................

I doubt it will come to the pancake flat counties like Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne etc. Same with most of Livingston & Genesee. I'd LOVE to be wrong on that but..........we'll see. I'm excited to see that it is back on the table for Ontario, south of Rt 20. Who wants to buy my Ithaca Mod 87? <grin>

Only thing I'll ever do anymore is grind mine I've tried all kinds of methods and have finally settled on this. Here is a similar recipe to what I make............ (I just couldn't find mine on my hard drive) Turkey Tetrazzini Ingredients: 8 ounces thin spaghetti, broken into 3-inch lengths, cooked, rinsed, and drained 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese, divided 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, divided 2 to 3 cups diced cooked turkey 2 tablespoons diced pimientos, if desired 1 tablespoon butter 4 ounces sliced mushrooms 1/4 chopped cup onion 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1/2 cup chicken broth 1/4 cup dry sherry salt and pepper, to taste Preparation: Combine spaghetti with 1 cup Cheddar cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese. Add turkey and pimientos. In a skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms and onions just until tender; add to the turkey mixture along with remaining ingredients. Gently stir to combine ingredients; place in a greased casserole and sprinkle with remaining cheeses. Cover with lid or foil and bake at 350° for about 45 minutes, or until hot and bubbly. Serves 6 to 8.

Bummer. Had it happen once with my Darton Maverick in my basement, full draw also. Kind of like a "come to Jesus" moment. I thought I was hurt bad but it was just a hell of a womp to my wrist and ego. Scared the living daylights out of me. You'll probably be a little gun shy for a bit.............

This will be my last post on this thread, I promise. Bubba, if you (or certainly anyone else) want to read a terrific book, pick up a copy of "Spring Turkey HUnting" The Serious Hunter's Guide, by John M. McDaniel. I got it in 1990 and it is beat up good. During some of those frustrating years I'd pick it up and reread some of the chapters it it would give me a good attitude adjustment. <grin> Chapter 5 tells the tale of a true spring gobbler hunt, IMO. This book was printed in 1986 so some of the information is a little dated, such as camo & gun selection. I don't recall but I doubt he talks much about hunting out of blinds in the middle of a field with motorizied dekes! I highly recommend this one. Here is a link to it on Amazon..... http://www.amazon.com/Spring-Turkey-Hunting-John-McDaniel/dp/0811716880 Good Luck!

Maybe you should get off the couch and get into the field bubba. You'll learn more from that then reading your dog eared copy of Field & Stream. Put me at the top of your list.

Maybe I should call it walk & call? When I'm hunting a spring gobbler, I'd really like to hear a gobble. Matching "wits" with an adult gobbler by callin is what it is all about to ME. If a guy wants to sit and ambush a silent gobbler with no calling from either the guy/gal or the turkey isn't spring turkey hunting. End of story. Sorry to offend. Plenty of state land for "walking & calling". Plenty of large tracts of private land to hunt with permission. Why in the hell would it be dangerous? Who is hunting hens? I call as much like a raspy old hen as possible, I'm not gobbling. I'd worry more about all the guys using decoys of GOBBLERS more than a guy walking & calling. Rude to other hunters? If a guy is working a bird, I'm gone. Generally it's pretty easy to tell if a guy is working a bird. I worrry more about all the "stalking" turkey hunters. You know, the ones that can't call or don't know how to call that figure they can just sneak in on a Tom. (and all they are doing is stalking a hen call, then they see a decoy................) Be afraid of them.........

This is going to kill me.........................I agree with bubba. He nailed it. Ah, that wasn't too bad.

Looks like the Ontario County Rifle Bill has legs again............ Rifle bills introduced in Albany New York Posted on May 3, 2012 Albany — Several more counties would become part of the state’s rifle hunting zone for big game under legislative proposals introduced this year. Whether the bills – which would add Albany, Rockland, Cayuga and part of Ontario County to the state’s rifle zone – advance beyond the committee stage remains to be seen. State Sen. Neil D. Breslin, D-Albany, introduced the Albany County rifle bill (S6849), which was referred to the senate environmental conservation committee for review. Breslin’s bill would allow rifles for big game everywhere within the county except the bowhunting-only portion of the county – Wildlife Management Unit 4J, a heavily populated area which includes the city of Albany. “Advances in shooting technology with regard to shotguns, including the use of rifled shotgun barrels and specialized ammunition, have given shotguns ballistic characteristics similar to that of rifles,” Breslin wrote in the bill. Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt, R-Greenwood Lake, sponsored the Rockland county legislation (A6591), which was also referred to the assembly’s environmental conservation committee. In Cayuga County, Assemblyman Brian Kolb, R-Canandaigua, was the chief sponsor of the bill (A9638). There is also a Senate companion bill (S6801). “Since 2005, several counties in the Finger Lakes Region, Central New York and the Southern Tier have been allowed to permit hunting of deer and bear with rifles,” Kolb wrote in a memo attached to the bill. “There have been very few reported adverse incidents or problems. Given the rural nature of Cayuga County and the safety record of hunters in the counties where rifle hunting has been permitted, it would be reasonable to now permit rifle hunters in Cayuga County the same opportunities.” The Cayuga County bill also sits in the environmental conservation committee. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, is the sponsor of the Ontario County bill (S2975), which if approved would allow rifle hunting in the portion of the county south of State Route 20. Several counties have been added to the state’s rifle zone in recent years. At times, the legislation was approved after the DEC’s hunting regulations guide was printed for that season, forcing the state to attempt to get word out to hunters of the approval of rifle use. But officials said the problem wasn’t a major one since the rifle bills’ passage creates a less restrictive situation. Rifles are now allowed in all of the state’s Northern Zone, as well as the Southern Zone counties of Orange, Rensselaer, Sullivan, Ulster, Columbia, Greene, Delaware, Chenango, Cortland, Otsego, Schoharie, Montgomery, Madison, Tioga, Chemung, Schuyler, Yates, Steuben, Allegany and Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties. Rifles are also allowed in a portion of eastern Broome County, the southern portion of Chautauqua County, as well as the sections of Washington, Herkimer, Fulton, Oneida and Oswego counties which lie in the Southern Zone.

Dove Hunting Season
Lawdwaz replied to mike rossi's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Thanks for all the updates guys. Looks like we're in the running for a dove season! Saw George Maziarz last night at the Smelt Festival in Lewiston. If I'd have been aware of this bill I'd have bought him a beer or three and got him voting for our team..........- 70 replies

Not my style. I'd much rather run & gun looking for the right bird on the right day. I understand sometimes a different strategy is what it takes to close the deal but if he's not gobbling at all and your just going to sit tight and not call, where is the fun in that? Spring turkey is all about a gobbling turkey and a calling hunter. Sometimes one without the other but never without both. YMMV................

I'll take a WAG and say the dude is from Long Island. Well, am I close? <grin> -
Shot my bird Tuesday morning around 10am. Rain, fog, wind and miles of side hillin' later we stumbled onto this 2 year old. Closed the deal with the Benelli at 30 yards or so. Despite the "no smile" picture, I was very happy!

Dove Hunting Season
Lawdwaz replied to mike rossi's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The fun meter is pegged when hunting dove. I just got back from a couple days of turkey hunting and noticed the fields of southern Ontario County loaded with the wonderful little mourning doves. I'll tell you, once you have hunted them once, you'll NEVER look at them the same. I just smile when I see the little buggers. Very cool birds.- 70 replies

Maybe you missed my point, the biggest reason for nixing the Sako is the fact it HAS a detachable mag. Not really the price of a spare mag. That is just a little more reason NOT to want one for a deer gun. My opinion. Detachable mags were part of the reason I grew out of my LH Remington 760 25 plus years ago. I didn't want to be messing with a clip that COULD be lost in the woods, truck, coat etc. when it was "go time". All that said, I bought a Tikka 223 for my son as a xmas gift back about 5 years ago. It is a great shooting piece and it is also fed with a detachable mag but I'm not so concerned with that a woodchuck/plinking gun. If a guy was going to go with a Sako, just get one with attached bottom metal and a hinged floor plate. It might look like this......................... No, this one isn't worth $2000 but you get the idea. 375HNH is the chambering. Only used it once for deer, killed a beautiful PA. spiker with it on an opening day 10+ years ago. Good times..... Another Sako is in my safe but that one is a HB 22-250 in RH configuration. Killed lots of chucks with it too. (no mag)- 40 replies
