  1. Good luck, see you at Aces around 10am <grin>
  2. Gutting? Updates....................
  3. Heading to PA for the first couple days of the season. Primary gun is my 7mm-08 stuffed with RL 15 powder and 120 grain Barnes TSX and backup rig is a 243, IMR 4350 and Sierra 100 grain Pro Hunter bullets. Interesting, the Sierra bullets came out of an abandoned camper I helped clean out this summer. We found a box of 243 components and the only thing of any value to me was a half a box of these Pro Hunters. Very old, price on the box was $7.30 They shot pretty good during load development, final load is 41.7 grains of 4350 and they shot into 3/4" @ 100 yards. I'm thinking the 243 will go for a walk on Tuesday.......
  4. Yes, the NULA is a great firearm built by a heck of a guy. I also have a 7mm-08 and a 300WSM, all with a FUBAR bolt (LH)!
  5. Is this topic where I was supposed to post this or start a new topic?? http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,2481.0.html
  6. As close to a perfect 10 as I'm likely to get (other than my wife) in this lifetime. Shot this brute at 11am on opening day in Ontario County. 275 grain Parker BE bullets out of my NULA 209 smokeless ML. Approx. 120 yards, walking. I use a Treewalker climbing stand. It took about 4 days to get down after the shot, climb down, unhook harness, load gun, peel off multiple layers of garments then put on orange vest and hat. He only went 40 yards or so after the shot. DEC in Avon aged him at 3.5 years. We weighed him on two scales, 175 on one and 160 on another. Just between us here, lets go with the 175lb. mark. G2's and G3's are pushing 10" and we rough green scored him at 147" B&C
  7. I also heard that this morning. What a shame...........
  8. Only one that really failed miserably for me was Elmer's. That stuff sucked
  9. Good old electrical tape works when you run out of gloves
  10. The past couple years I've been using Saunders NPV arrow mate cement. No problems and very fast drying. I've used the old Fletch Tite, the newer Platinum and Duco cement also. Like mentioned above, a little drop at the leading edge of the fletch when you remove the finished arrow from your jig goes a long ways at keeping feathers or vanes from being FUBO.
  11. Tough to beat a Block. It'll probably last you for years.
  12. So very sorry to hear that, condolences and prayers to your family.
  13. 400 lbs? That would cover me, my wife and part of my Lab! 240 on a good day.
  14. Related to our Doc? He lives near Bristol.....and it is a somewhat unusual surname. Regardless.....prayers for the families. Good lord.......................
  15. Is this an ad for the Rescue 1 CDS? I've also been looking at them. Gander Mtn and a local shop, Doc's Archery carry them. I talked to Mark at Doc's about them last week. The ones he had would not fit either him or me. I think it is a terrific idea that could certainly save your life in the right circumstance.
  16. Congrats on the buck! The pose could use some help though. :-[
  17. Hey Cabin Fever......... Bummer on the broken main beam. One time probably 20 years ago I shot a pretty decent 8 pointer, made a so so hit and it took off. About 300 yards away a guy starts banging away at it. 5 shots later and the deer falls to the ground. The other guy and I get to the deer at the same time. Hmmm, interesting, only one hole in it and the main beam looks like yours! 5 shots and the guy put him down with a shocker to the melon! Basically he was dead on his feet from my shot. The other guy was a bit disappointed but he understood!!
  18. A band saw is not necessary to cut up a deer. Bone him out. I can do the entire job with out a saw of any kind and have plenty of times. I do use a meat/bone saw (looks like a hack saw on steroids) but that is when I butcher at home and only used to severe the front legs, above the knee and to remove the neck after skinning down as far as I can go. After I remove the front shoulders, neck meat, back straps and tender loins then I remove the hindquarters at the ball & socket joint. At that point, I have to remove the rear feet from the quarters before I bring them into the house for the boning process and that is also done with the bone saw. The last time to use the bone saw is when removing the skull plate of the buck for mounting in a prominent spot in my man cave or just toss in a bucket of other misc. bucks over the years. Get a decent skinning knife, a boning or fillet knife, a bone saw. some quality Cling or Saran wrap, some Reynolds Freezer Paper, masking tape and a Sharpie and rule the butchers world. The only difficult thing for me is getting rid of the parts but we have sources for disposal! (I know, the deer in question is already cut up but for the next one, he'll be prepared)
  19. Nice character to the dude! Where are you from? He looks like a buck I saw in East Aurora. Good job.
  20. Great job! Looks like a Rage broadhead. (You know, like you hit 'em with an axe!)
  21. Funny thing, I have some friends who have been hunting forever, one in his late 50's and the other in his early 70's and both are very intelligent. Neither one takes the safety end of this too serious. Hunting from a climber without a harness on and attached to the tree at all times for one and the other just uses a strap like we used to use, 10 years ago hooked around the tree and around his chest, under his arms. I know, better than nothing. Or not. Close to 100 years experience between them. One of them is in a boot cast right now, because his climber slipped and he took a 8' slide down the tree and wedged his right foot into the V of his stand on the way. Nice.................
  22. They don't? That's a crazy blanket statement. Keep it coming..............
  23. Damn shame. Didn't have to happen. Prayers to his family.....
