largest STATE park in the US. Very important distinction and after the state made it forever wild and eliminated logging, it's really, really tough hunting. The best thing NY could do would be to go in and selectively log the DAKs. It'd generate millions in revenue, fuel renewable resources from within the country instead of the rainforests of Brazil to help with the war on plastics and best of all open up the canopy to new young growth for wildlife to thrive. But yeah... never going to happen.

yeah I know, that's why I'm at peace. At the very least I was able to till some land and learned I need to keep the weeds down prior to planting so that I have more soil exposure and less thatch/hay clippings. As far as timing, I was just going by what the bags recommended for our area, which was somewhere between 7/20-8/20. -
except regular middle class people can't afford that for just hunting land. Those that can afford these leases are the rich and pushes us more and more towards the European model . It's not the case out west where public land is plenty, but sure is the case east of the mississipi and even the heartland.
-
To each their own... but to quit hunting instead of even giving a public a chance? That kinda tells me all I need to know, which again... you do you. Shot one of my best bucks on public land down south as my only options were pay a shit ton of money to join a hunting club, hunt public or don't hunt at all. We shouldn't discount what some of the property taxes have risen to. "back in the day" ag land wasn't a lot of money at all in taxes, but now (especially if you have a barn on it), it's not cheap. So I think many are just maybe hoping to cover their tax bill.

Many a wise people have repeated these words to me. Just because someone is asking for a certain price, doesn't mean it's worth it or that they'll get it.

stopped by saturday. Did some tree stand work. It would have made about 6 days post rain. I have some green, so something is growing but I don't know if it's what I planted. I've decided to hold off on opening up the expensive extra seed I bought for now and will give it a few more weeks before I decide if I should put it down or not. At this point I'm at peace with my experiment for the first year. Clover has come back real well in just a week post rain and if the fall plot works, that's great and if not I learned a ton and will be better prepared for next year. -
who is marion? Why do people keep changing their names around here.
-
in fairness I don't go to rochester either.
-
and then a grouse is flushed in front of you and you have to spend the morning with the small turd in your pants. smh....
-
When's the last time you've been to the roc or buffalo? Quite a bit of industry has moved in... although yes it's nothing like the Kodak days.

rain last night and more today. Either today or tomorrow I'm hoping to see some sprouts and also maybe so rejuvenated clover in the spring plot. Not sure if I overseed yet or keep the bags closed. It's another $90 I'd like back if I can haha. -
we get it. You post this same line of thinking constantly. Very few guys are out there claiming it's easy to get a bird or 2 every year. I don't know why you bring this up so often, it's not a point that needs to be repeated or that is misunderstood.

My draftkings sports betting has also sucked lately. Apparently I'm better at NBA and NFL than MLB. So there goes my backup plan haha.

I'm down 12% this year in my 401k. My personal stock fun money isn't as bad, but not great either lol.
-
you can't quite claim CT yet bud. You have to be there at least a year (or full deer season) haha. And you're still a downstater to us
-
ah yes, when it comes to covid it's us upstaters who are soft. Notice they're not dropping off buses of illegals here? haha

this is what I came here to say. You don't have to be a biologist to drive down the road and see that once fallow field is now a housing development. You don't need to be a biologist to see the old overgrown vineyard or field is now a corn field. I don't know if I believe predator increase is as substantial as some think (there is all sorts of data out there about wolves and elk that don't line up with the publics opinion on predator impact), but I do firmly believe that habitat loss is a huge factor. I listened to an actual biologist from the NWTF talk about the fact that 1 in 6 eggs actually hatch. Then 1 in 6 polts make it the first month, then from there only 1 in 6 make it to a year. Those odds are crazy. Final thought, numbers might be down because hunters are down. Look at this forum as a window into hunter interest. It will never be as popular as deer hunting is, but interest seems to be waning even more lately and just isn't a big spike like we see with deer. People are busier now these days than ever. I myself am a very casual turkey hunter. I go out 4 or 5 times a spring. I don't really push too hard to "get my bird" and I'm not bothered if I don't. But turkey hunting in my opinion is hard. I did a survey a while back and most on this site agreed that it's harder to get a bird than a deer. So you have this hard to kill animal that produces little meat and it requires a 4am or earlier wakeup call... and you end up with what you have today. Personally there is nothing more magical in the woods than hearing a gobbler close in on you as the sun rises, so I'll continue to head out every spring, but I know for many it's just not worth the effort. Final, final point. I can turkey hunt hundreds of acres with permission and encounter no hunters. That same land is way off limits to me during deer and I hear guns boom all gun season long. food for thought.

I think some school admins need an adjustment post remote learning too. Talked to quite a few teacher friends who feel the same but seems the state or school admins aren't listening. We're still holding all of our kids to the same expectations and yet most missed a significant amount of learning and that's not including the social aspects. My kids are entering 4th, 2nd and K. These are critical learning years for reading and writing and yet they seem to be comparing their "levels" to students who had full on in classroom, no mask instruction like it's somehow equal. end rant

what's the average germ time for a winter blend of kale, turnips, beets etc? Like how long after the rains monday should I hope for little sprouts? Just wanting to know when or if I should overseed if all my seed was eaten by birds lol.
