wrong. overall numbers are down, but bowhunters have increased every year for as long as I can remember. That's why this is such a stupid ass rule. You're punishing the one group that is growing. The land access is absolutely the problem. Most deer infestations aren't in giant tracks of public land, they're in small parks around the burbs and people are sick of their shrubs being eaten, but nobody can hunt and kill the deer who are doing it. -
So to piggy back on this, I was in my climber on public land last Saturday evening. MS has a 30 minute before and after rule. 2 doe came in and I was under a deep canopy. At about 10 min after sunset I lost them in the thick stuff, only to shift my weight and realize one was still there at about 20 yards looking at me. I would not have taken the legal shot even if I could have.

or maybe your buddy is an idiot. Just because it's legal doesn't make it right either. Dark canopies don't provide good light even in NY legal hours sometimes. A field on a fresh snow and a full moon can be more than enough with a scope. You need to be legal AND USE YOUR BRAIN.

so I'll admit right off the bat that I'm not a knife guy. I only own a few, and the only ones that really get used are my buck knife and skinning knives. So what are the benefits or why do you guys use stones? NY's sunrise/sunset rules are senseless. 30+ is the safe standard. Even then I wait to get down just to limit spooking.

I hunted darien one year. Didn't see a ton of activity during bow and this was about 5 years ago. -
i agree with most that you did your best. it's part of hunting unfortunately. I wont try and make you feel better by assuring you the deer will survive, because I don't think any of us can say that definitively. But they're a tough animal and the fact that you're torn up is a good way to feel. Best to try and forget and get back out there.

not going to totally disagree with you, but I've killed a handful of deer downwind. The deer weren't pushed and they were unspooked. Could be the height of the stand and the thermals, and it could be I didn't smell "enough" like irish spring or cigs for the deer to care. Regardless, nobody who is "scent free" or who doesn't practice scent control can say they've never been busted. I choose to limit my odds.

I'm not sure I would agree that anything I buy hasn't helped with success. Sure, I could still hunt with an old recurve, but my compound is more accurate and the range is better. The same can be said for rifles. When it comes to gadgets, camo, gear etc. Almost everyone I've bought has mostly just been to make my hunt easier/more comfortable. nothing wrong with that.

you're going to need internet for anything unless you just want an antenna and the 5 basic.

valvoline has damaged the gasket on our old rav4 twice. i do my own vehicles but rarely do the wives. I will never go back to them again.

Hunted a spot and tree for the first time tonight. Had 2 doe near dark just out of range in some thick stuff. One of the problems using a climber on public land I guess. Still nice to get some action just the second day out -
only mod I made to my summit was a pullup rope. I honestly don't think I'd change anything other than maybe something to reduce the noise.

I always found it funny that the non-scent free guys treat it like a badge of honor. Who cares what I do in prep for hunting, I don't care that you fill up your truck at the gas station in the same boots and clothes you hunt with, don't be bothered that I put all my outer layers in a bag and hang them outside on the deck.

there is nothing illegal or really even wrong with scouting or small game hunting public land during open deer season. But it is kind of a dick move to other hunters. /flame suit on

I don't know where you hunt, but a firestarter and knife are good things to have in the woods no matter what you're doing.

satellite owns me only because of sports. if it wasn't for sports i'd have dropped it. if you're not a sports fan, there's plenty ways to get buy. I do believe alacart cable is coming in the future, it's just a matter of which provider dares to roll it out.

do what makes you happy. Just don't complain if what makes you happy doesn't achieve your goals. that's my philosophy.

there's a good thread or 2 here about what to pack, i'd search for it and other threads. we certainly have some dumb pissing matches here but also a lot of invaluable information. I think you're on the right track, just be patient and learn from your mistakes. You will make mistakes

i started a few years ago with laser eyes and switched to nockturnals this year. they're awesome.
