don't underestimate public land. And start earlier for permission. I found a few good spots by getting turkey permission, showing i was respectable and responsible and got in for deer as well. There's whole threads and articles on how to get permission.

an appletv will allow you to rent movies for a similar price as cable. also netflix or amazon prime of course.
-
yeah they definitely missed cell phone and caught taking a pee hunter.
-
that's fair. once in season i significantly decrease number of arrows flung. I do believe however that too many guys stop shooting all together and I've never understood that.
-
I wont drag it on. practice makes perfect and practice how you play. even more so if you have 1 pin i'd think you'd practice after different yardage. at the end of the day it's not hurting anything and I'm a little surprised to hear you poo poo practice.
-
that is other pins are also functioning correctly. To practice the shots (hopefully from a practice stand) and understand the angles at those heights.

thought this was pretty classic

I know we've had some lengthy discussions on reporting poachers and I do still believe that it's hard when most of the hunters you know are good friends and family. I'm not saying you shouldn't blow your uncle in, but it's something to think about before getting all huffy and puffy.

feeling sick is totally part of the game. Some guys are harder on themselves then they should be and I'm one of them. I know others who shrug it off, seen them shrug off wounding a deer like it's no big deal. That's not me. I think it's important with all things in life to realize it's not the end of the world. I've screwed up on some wall mounters. You never fully forget, but time does help, and so does the next deer. as far as gun hunting, the deer are a whole new animal. don't assume it's just as easy

this isn't intended as criticism, and don't take it like I'm being hard on you but hunting at night when you know there's no way you can track in the morning is a risky game. I'm not saying you shouldn't ever do it, but unfortunately even if you recover the horns the meat might be lost to either yotes or the temp this time of year and that's a shame. Plan your hunts carefully guys and always plan for the worst.

and it's also ignorant to pretend it doesn't happen.

I'd like to recommend you have at least 2, but preferably 3 targets. Mine are at 15, 20 and 30. But it's important to practice for all shots, even if it's just an arrow at each.
-
2 unwritten rules we have as well unless you're a new/young hunter. even then there's enough doe where you should try to avoid the bb's.

i guess it's not surprising this thread went in the direction it did. To be honest I was really hoping to keep it as more of a journal. I know some outdoor writers lurk here and would not be surprised if some DEC do as well. But they're not going to read through 20 pages of bitching. They might however skim through a few pages of frustrated bow hunters.
-
point is that hunters are pretty traditional and the enforcement of the baiting laws are nearly impossible. So change is always met with cynicism.
-
If you golf, dropping your bowhand is very similar to lifting your head to early. if you play baseball or football it's very similar to taking your eye off the ball if you play basketball it's almost exactly the same as your followthrough archery is a sport and your technique is critical.

cheap bushnell for me. I generally bring it once or twice to new stands or the first time I hunt them. Then I pick out the tree or spot and put the mental note in the brain. If you're using a climber or stalking or hunting a lot of new property I'd invest in a good one, but generally it's a basic tool I haven't felt the need to buy "the best one" of.
-
i'm not saying to take it easy, but a lifetime ban is basically as bad as it gets. Although I bet most poachers could care less whether they have a tag or not.
-
chances are anyone knowingly breaking the law is just going to cut up the deer themselves. They're just going to catch the idiots or uninformed. Which isn't a bad thing, just saying. lifetime ban? Really? For the first year it was introduced?
-
so they just passed baiting in Mississippi. The first few nice bucks making the rounds down there were all instantly met with "probably shot over bait so it doesn't count". It's sad really what these rules have done.

If you're going to skin right away you shouldn't let it hang long. it'll dry out. quarter it and put it on ice, but don't freeze. If you're not going to skin, you can let it hang and it'll be just fine. There's no absolute right or wrong method, but there are certainly some techniques to avoid.

Curious who has been hunting doe only land and had to pass up a buck they would have normally shot? I know this is a little bit of a taboo discussion so I'm not sure how much "volunteering" of info we have but I feel we should at least have a "vent" thread.
