I agree grow. We have 2 spots that we hunt that were old orchards. this year they're all dropping apples, and they seem to drop at different times. But if you have the time, clearing out the sunlight blockers and doing some pruning of these old trees will keep them producing for years to come.

because at the age of 3, we're taught violence is bad... but people are beaten and murdered every minute of the day. education, legislation. Sometimes it just doesn't matter. what.... with that logic why don't we just eradicate all deer? can you elaborate? -
thanks. I'm thinking if I do buy a savage rifle it would be the 11/111. I look at is an investment and something that'd be handed down for generations. a few hundred more for a better gun might be worth it.

I'm not sure how long ago this was, but OSHA's whistle blower line would have been your friend there. Not to mention a good lawyer. -

yes and no. big deer and freaking giants are 2 separate things, and I understand the "must be something in the water" comments when they appear in consecutive years. -
dont see a lot of red-dot's on deer guns. prefer a 3 to 9 myself. Good luck.

i think his question was if he should call before the season? and if I'm correct, i'm not sure that would make much of a difference especially once the rut starts. Bucks will travel quite a distance, but maybe someone who has tried this can chime in. calling during the season, if done right can certainly pay off big. You seem to be focusing a lot on lures and attractants and you really don't need to hunt that way. All those things can certainly help, but scouting your area and identifying runs and patters is all you really need. It's getting late to put in a stand or blind so I'd do that soon and dont get frustrated. You can sit days without seeing a deer. Patience will pay off eventually though.

a guy I work with who's based out of Kentucky was talking with me about this. I don't understand the appeal of shooting a velvet buck, and he thought it would be cool.

one thing is for sure. It sucks that we even have to question these things. That some hunters are so sneaky and spot light hungry they can call into question the actual legitimate kills that others achieve. -

and that's the point of my other post. Big knock on us "millennials" is that we feel entitled and want the big bad job NOW. What's lost on most that come out of school with high debt, or who are just starting out in the work force is that you have to work hard to earn it. Work hard, get a few breaks and know the right people and eventually you'll land the job you want. I'll never forget drinking keystone light and eating nothing but venison and ramen noodles in college while my buddies who went straight to work all bought motorcycles. I almost thought about dropping out. But 10 years later, I have a bike and a house and most of them had to sell theirs and still live at home. -

I did not open the link, nor do I really care about the topic as I agree many hunters have different goals, standards etc. and that's just fine. However, if you are a trophy hunter (and in my book as long as you're not wasting the meat then that's fine) I do not see anything wrong with joining a group that has similar goals.* *so long as they're ethical and not hurting other hunters. With "hurting" being subjective. -

agreed on letting it play out. But smart or not, some people do dumb things to make a buck no pun intended. -

You have to be very careful how you word that. There are absolutely people who should go straight to a trade instead of wasting money on college. However, for the right profession (engineering/medical/computer etc) and if you're the right person who will be dedicated to what you go to school for then you should absolutely do it. This is also to say if you think you have a good knack for business, getting your MBA can pay big dividends. Don't get me wrong, there are days I wish I was just working with my hands. There are days I enjoy sitting at the desk. I do also think that a trade will and can make you more money early on. Not to mention some offer some great pay with overtime to the younger non-family man willing to put in the hours. The college education might need to work his way up through the entry level jobs making less, but can also have a higher ceiling for those that deserve it. But there are travel requirements, late nights without overtime etc. pros and cons. it really is person specific. And never underestimate going to a community college first then going to state. The 4 year private schools can really rack up the bills, and yes loans do take time to pay off (although their IR is low and tax deductible), so you have to weigh your ROI. If the average salary of the career you're getting into is $40k, you might not want to go to a 4 year private school for that. If you're becoming a doctor, those huge loans are easier to swallow by your nice salary. Don't overlook the armed forces paying your way either. My father in law is an eye doctor making great money and his education was paid for by the army. -

perfect illustration of what i was trying to say and exactly how we do ours -
not bad. not a lot of experience with their scopes, but sounds like it'll do just fine.

for deer or human? plant spring. be sure to prune properly first few years. should even fence them in till they can handle the damage a deer can do. i would say the cheaper the tree the better as i dont believe deer are picky. but if you really want to suck them in, pears are where it's at. But look at what's planted near you. Give them something they dont have hundreds of acres of access to already.

the couple bucks that show up in my back yard basically lost their velvet overnight. one day full velvet, the next shiny white. not even anything hanging.

where things get confusing is that different WMU have different regs and in some cases counties as well. The DEC website is pretty good, but from you posted, for most of the state yes, you are correct. to a point. For example you cannot use 2 tags during the same season. But spread out over 3, as long as you're using the right weapon, then yes you can generally shoot 2 antlered deer. And given your WMU DMP regs and the ability to transfer DMPs you can shoot a ton of doe... haha.

yeah at first I'm like... ah what's the big deal? haha.

I think very few people truly "love" their jobs, and what I mean by that is would you do it for free or a greatly reduced paycheck? For example, racecar driver, playboy photographer, outdoor guide etc. I do not love my job, I barely even like it. But it challenges me enough to keep it interesting and provides enough of a paycheck to support the things I do love in life (hobbies and family). I think as long as you don't dread going to work (of course nobody wants to go to work) and you're not overly stressed and the job is taking a toll on your health and family then most jobs are just that. Jobs. I'd qualify all my dribble with the fact that i'm not 45+ haha. -
nice setup man. scope gun combo?
