it's been said in the deer biologist community that 70% of antler genetics come from the doe. also that making harvest decisions to hopes to change genetics in a free range deer herd is like pissing into the north atlantic while watching the water level. are that many doe at all being taken in the area you hunt, or are they the same deer with the same genetics year after year? if you see more 6 and 8 point spindly racks it just means more young bucks are blooming into 6 and 8 points still at a young age. research has shown that a buck can make it happen with around 6 doe at most. if you're in the catskills or an area with lower doe density that number is probably lower. even then twin fawns are found to have different fathers. what you see is what you see. I can't argue there but I think it's probably from other reasons though than what you think.

in areas you see little to no deer it makes the most sense to have ARs. you're constantly having a protected portion of bucks up moving around to compete for the limited number of doe. you see and experience more action with them running around. yet next year they will most likely become fair game, along with any yearling bucks that following year that are fair game too. as buck age structure grows the AR minimum buck becomes what you know to be the spike horn, the smallest legal buck out there. it very well might get passed by a good number of hunters despite legal, because they're seeing or having encounters with something bigger running around. almost all AR proposals voluntary or mandatory do or can make exemptions for new hunters. you can't imagine the opportunity they have then. on our co-op with voluntary restrictions new hunter opportunity is extremely high to the point that it's practically guaranteed.

I've posted here before, but bulleye pistol matches can take place at local club leagues, traveling leagues, or sanctioned competitions. basically, it's shooting a 22LR pistol one handed. 16ish yards away. 3 courses of fire; slow, timed, and rapid. 10 shots for each course. 10 minutes for first course. timed fire is (2) strings of 5 shots each string being shot in 20 seconds. rapid fire is (2) strings of 5 shots each string being shot in 10 seconds. targets are different for slow fire vs timed and rapid. bullseye is about the size of your thumbnail. anyone participate in these?
-
Sorry Steve. I'd pay for the string and do the review. I don't have a recurve crossbow though. I think the max draw weight regs for NY strangle the heck out of the idea of using a recurve crossbow. maybe that's contributing to nobody posting. also many were probably out dropping deer and turning into late night butchers as it was last weekend of regular season for southern zone.

I don't think many people realize that when everyone is subjected to a restriction like one buck or antler minimums, everyone is now vested. the community starts policing themselves more. I know because that's what happens on large QDM co-ops out here when no legal or contractually binding repercussions exist for breaking the rules.

take my area. DEC doe harvest expectations are about 3.5 doe per square mile to maintain population. Hunter density is a lot more and could easy take more than that, especially if you can fill any doe tag with a gun. DEC plays around the idea of creating opportunity despite it's unlikely to be capitalized on. for example everyone can shoot doe with over the counter tags bow/muzzleloader in all WMU's except a small number of them up in northern NY. it's just the hunter wielded implement allowed isn't as proficient as a rifle or slug gun. you'd be taking more than a sustainable number of doe. that's why earn a buck will never happen in almost all areas of NY.
-
made it what, doe only? i'd still hunt 100%, most years that's all I shoot anyway. Many areas of NY couldn't support that rule though.

ARs have to be tailored to the specific area and what's harvested there to achieve the same goals throughout NY state. for example the AR would be ideal here, but people would hang you at the idea of limiting them to one buck. out in portions of western NY 3 on one side would do very little for results exception add restriction that'd piss people off. it has to be different for different areas. while I agree with the second one about the doe it'd be beneficial to limit it to having one antlerless tag good for anywhere in NY and the rest lottery. that would allow some to flexibility to take advantage of opportunity they might get to hunt elsewhere unplanned but have more controlled and closely monitored doe harvest.

exactly my point. that's not what he typed. what he did type wasn't really the whole truth and nothing but the truth. you cherry pick part of something and present it on it's own and it doesn't retain the same meaning. there's also a set of criteria that QDMA requires outside of that statement that warrants the acceptance of antler restrictions, mandatory or otherwise.
-
in Mississippi the state record was being contested by a buck shot in a management area open to the public that has antler restrictions and self in manned check-in stations. private land isn't the ones that'd benefit the most from it. it's the tracts with much smaller private land parcels and public land that'd see more improvement and benefit. I can talk to my neighbors to get a sense of being on the same page. someone hunting public land has no idea if the next guy or another in the area will pass any deer, for whatever reason, as any deer is really fair game in NY.

the author is blatantly against antler restrictions as a whole even though he pretends not to be. he even slipped in some evil myths about antler restrictions that have proven not to be true. also let it slip that he's concerned about antler genetics in a free range herd. he even fabricated QDMA's stance on them. antler restrictions and one buck rule each have their place. each can and can't do certain things. it's been beaten to death and back that hunter feedback and dynamics of deer population lend itself to the conclusion OBR is best suited in some areas of western ny and ARs are the tool of choice everywhere else accept once you get up into the Adirondacks. regardless a vast majority seem to feel that with either restriction on buck harvest throughout the season, new hunters young and old should be exempt. that's the way I feel it should be and with either restriction that exemption is feasible. DEC weighted certain things differently than others within the survey results to present their modified decision moving forward that killed the idea of either OBR or ARs, championing the idea of "no change". I think the take away here is consistent with raw survey results, in that a majority of us are willing to accept some form of restriction and aren't truly content with "no change" for decades more.

i'm with SOD. also you may have in advertently connected up too much load to that timer. unless the outside light posts are LED lighting you might have them and something else connected. also if something else like a pool pump or air compressor in the garage is running on that same circuit it can cause a problem for electronic control switches like the one you put in. load on the circuit like those create electrical "noise" which can damage the switch electronics. it's more than likely moisture from snow and everything that got in somewhere it shouldn't. that causes a brief short that trips the breaker inside. maybe a gasket on something outside is bad. when YOU wire something using wire nuts you should still use electrical tape to wrap the outside of the nut/wire and make sure the wires are insulated from each other.

family Christmas party out of town this weekend, busy at work, and sitting at my desk sick as it is. most likely not happening at all. I wish that wasn't the case.
-
definitely. we have no big bucks here. at all. period. hunters don't waste your time and instead hunt elsewhere.
-
I don't. not a single one. all mine guns are babied to a degree.
-
I've never recovered a bullet either. 30-30, 30-06, and 300win mag is what I've used for deer. for a while I've only shot deer with a 30-06 and Federal Fusion ammo that's a bonded spitzer boat tail I think. I don't even think I've gotten a single hole with my muzzleloader.

never known of a buck in it's prime to be called a "scrub". age does wonders when it comes to deer. proof that with age some can get big, even out here.

I on rare occasion have posted some here and on facebook. local people who know of me know where my families private land is, other hunting spots not so much. reduces temptation and issues if I don't post trail cam pictures or bucks I take. do tend to give all the trail cam pictures and info I have when someone takes a deer if been after or have seen. I did take a small by my standards 8 pointer this year. I posted it on social media but it was more sharing memories of the evening than anything. Moog's reminder buck kinda stuck with me. despite it was small I had no regrets taking it, good to ground yourself every now and then. I have friends that we just say took a buck but don't share pictures. we know there's plenty big enough and happy we both had success. don't ask don't tell. works well. -
I have yet to see one in the wild or a black bear. moose and whatever else I've seen.
-
i'd do it over beer and stories but i'm on the otherside of the state. real hitch is fitting it into my schedule. November until the new year is busy for me with trying to find time hunting myself, work, and QDM co-op stuff.

bag balm or okeefe's working hands both work good but that's a horrible spot I agree.

i'd like to see us get less sensitive over carrying out the death penalty. if you say rob a bank and things go wrong and someone dies you go away forever, but I get it. it wasn't the intent. someone like a bomber or one behind a mass shooting should just go to the front of the line. no need to rehab you and no need to pay for your room and board. -
Can a bullet kill a deer even if you miss?

No match for pool water. That episode 2as cool. Still see in movies bullets zipping thru deep water. BS. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk -
I don't need to do ours. My in-laws were paying over $50 to do theirs. Last couple seasons they asked me to do it. Took me 20 mins. I'm a big fan of the woven cloth gloves with rubber dip coated palms and fingers. I use them for everything from gutters to loading hay bales at the farm. $20 gets you a giant bag. Just toss them when they get too worn out. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
