  1. I actually don't have one..... yet? I'll probably be out with others who have them though.
  2. doing what Phade said will help. over 20 yards is where I use my rangefinder most and to scan for branches. otherwise at say under 20 yards you're pin gaps are small enough at close range that your shot is more effected by your body position (form) at the steeper angle due to being so close. you generally remember what's within that wheel house distance to where you're not using it. at single digit yardages from a stand your shot angles are so steep it's harder to hit enough vitals and you're actually shooting like it's 35-40 yards depending on your setup. I've mostly found hillsides and ridges is where it'll save you and make the shot count. my best stand is a wooded hill side funnel between two bedding areas and bigger sections of timber. using the rangefinder and shooting deer out of it there's a difference in pin placement of several yards compared to what it'd normally be. it'd be enough for a deer to jump the string or shoot over its back.
  3. this is pretty much what I do. I've got a Nikon Riflehunter 1000. most of the time I keep it on a lanyard across my chest to rest on my right side (I shoot right handed). that way if I need it quick I've got it at the ready, but most of the time you don't have time or the situation doesn't allow for that extra movement. low light transmission sucking when compared to binos is something to remember. especially when my display text lights up red. consequence of a range finder being a small optic.
  4. oh I can get to mine but damn is it cold.
  5. more layman's terms than saying a loaded down 375 Ruger.... from the description that's what it sounds like.
  6. heck I've just put mine in the microwave and they're still good.
  7. mine were from Stratton's Custom Meats here near the capitol region.
  8. definitely sounds like a capable thumper but manageable. if I loaded my own ammo it'd be something i'd look into.
  9. when talking about it I'm surprised how many people have it! found out at the game dinner I went to this weekend. the bear there was cooked and cooked some more though.
  10. I don't during the winter but do during the summer into early fall before season. outdoor 3D's now usually have low turn outs do the cold. indoor 3D's are fun but usually limited to 35 yards and by the time I shoot a couple targets the yardage for the rest is dialed right in, compared to outdoors.
  11. I haven't. Most of the time it's someone's dog with a collar and tag clinking around from it's neck. one year I had the same two dogs with collars chase bucks off before the shot during bow season in just one weekend. I got down and tried to call them in to read their tags but they were all crazed from chasing deer and very nervous. most people make sure their dogs aren't running wild during hunting season. I think owner should've gotten slapped with a heavy fine for endangering the welfare of his/her dog. I know it's not the dogs fault but I was so pissed and saw their condition I honestly thought about shooting them. Couldn't do it though for various reasons. Cats are just ridiculous for some reason there's more of them around than anything. old barns with insane amounts of cats you have no part of is being a problem yourself. I don't know of anyone who calls them in to a humane society or DEC.
  12. had a couple when I was a young kid but nothing to that big. probably a shorter tined, 17" wide, 7 pointer was the biggest. had a 100" 6 pointer my cousin ended up getting. to far in the woods and just over the bank to get a shot. he shot that within 15 minutes of it passing by me. bigger have gotten away from me but I took them later in the season. hunting out in northwest OK I watched a bedded 140" buck out in the middle of a field from a spotting scope tagged out several hundred yards away with a friend in a blind at the field edge. it got away. saw a big one jumping through a CRP field in KS that was very huge but I wasn't there to hunt.
  13. yea I've heard of it but rare and isolated to this case I think.
  14. definitely.... it's the only thing my uncle really ever drinks. it's really not that bad at all. rolling rock and many others in my opinion are worse. not to spin off on a tangent.
  15. I was making a joke about hipsters (and might as well throw in "lumber sexual" dudes) compared to women. being a woman not a problem. being a dude, acting a little too feminine (trendy and whatever else), while trying to looking like a manly outdoors man.... well that to me is a bit odd. I think you may have took my post the wrong way. connection to hunting is what it is... people of all walks of life can and do hunt. I'd support any right minded individual in their efforts to take up hunting.
  16. it's very true and I welcome them.... I mean it's inevitable that there's a growing population of women involved in the hunting world. ....seriously though despite the hipster concept to me is ridiculous, I would and have welcomed them to hunting.
  17. never really stop but tend to pull in cams around late January and don't put them back out until around May.
  18. it's not in working order or the best condition but I've got an heirloom that's similar. it's been passed down to the oldest son or oldest son of a generation otherwise and for a very long time. skipped a couple to get to me because my great grandmother had no brothers and no sons of her own. my dad was the first boy of my grandmother or her sister. so my dad has it and decades down the road i'll end up with it. hard to believe it's lasted centuries despite house fires and whatever else. I'd have to go check as I can't remember exactly how old it is. ... I don't think it is in working order anyway.
  19. yea 90 day clock is about up. I haven't been out much lately. getting more snow tonight. I may skirt some bedding areas down wind and hinge cut some more smaller tender stuff to the ground. I try to stay away this late though unless it's relatively warm with little to no snow. they don't need me chasing them through the snow. it probably takes a lot of buds and little woody shoots to get back the energy it takes to run up and over to the next ridge. that and it's pretty darn cold and miserable out. especially this record month.
  20. Stainless vs blued barrel thread got me thinking. Is there a rifle out there that you'd like for certain reasons that'd be something with emphasis on looks and meaning? what would it be, with a description, and why? Growing up hunting when I was younger and before I had a rifle of my own I'd borrow my dad's Remington 7600 in 30-06. He bought back the rifle he'd shot his first deer with and I shot my first with which was a Win 94 30-30 but that I'd never change and keep it for what it is. However, that 7600 was absolutely coveted in my young mind. I mean that was is still is his go to rifle he had a bond with. Blued, wood stock with standard for back then engraving/checkering, see through Weaver rings, old Bushnell gloss 3-9x40 scope, and simple leather sling. Despite his connection he was glad to let me use it, especially when my younger brother started using the 30-30. brother even used it on occasion. despite the less than perfect fit and horrific trigger both my dad and I made some ridiculously amazing shots with it. for decades it's only seen one specific load through it, 150gr Rem Cor-lokt, that it shots lights out sub-MOA with. growing up is was the NY woods and more importantly Dad's gun of choice. For that reason a glossy blued Rem 7600 pump in 30-06, with a fancy high grade wood stock would be my custom gun of choice to keep nice and pass down. It'd have an Illion stamp on it, have a nice accurate Hart barrel from NY, and some replacement trigger or trigger work. I'm a Nikon man but it'd have to have a Bushnell scope on top as that's what his 7600 has worn for years. Finally it'd have an engraved receiver. Pictured on on side would be a woods scene with a lone old and large pine tree with a rickety chair at it's base. it was dad's spot and then when I was old enough he dubbed it mine. I had my first hunt with dad from it and shot my first buck from it and alone (high racked 4x2). on the otherside would probably be my dad's, brother's, and my name maybe. So like I asked above, what would it be?
  21. I will say that I still have to imagine stainless catches the eye of game but my experiences say otherwise. I've had game so close I couldn't breathe and the stainless barrel didn't bother them. non polished SS I think is not much worse if any than a glossy blued barrel. the polished side of the bolt on my Browning a-bolt however bothers me every time the sun comes up. hasn't busted me yet but there's some glare coming off that thing for sure.
  22. my dad's friend with hunt, mounting and everything costed him $25k
  23. i'll back that with mountain lions out of a tree with a bow. I've seen lots of bear footage where they didn't follow up but a big hand cannon was at the ready.
  24. not sure on the bullet/load but my dad's friend has hunted all kinds of stuff with his rifle and it's a 300 wrby mag. he's got a full body mount of a 10.5+ foot square bear on a rock formation. his rifle seemed to do just fine. didn't hardly run at all. guess they were pretty worried about other bears skirting them while trying to break it down though he told me.
  25. different. I like it too. looks like a clean and real nice job from the photos.
