Binoculars Recommendation
dbHunterNY replied to BKhunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I've got a pair of Nikon monarch 10x40mm. I'm happy with them. Pulled all the binocs out of the case and tried them all that we're close to $400 or less. Nikon glass was slightly better but what sold me was depth of focus with my eyeballs. I could look at things different distances without straining by eyes and touching the dial as much. This is something that wins over many westerners that spend all day glassing. Vortex are good too. Swarovski are good but 3 times as much. Nikon edge are the similar cost along with others with similar design and glass. -
Easton FMJ are tough and penetrate deep so don't the Injections.

That's got to make you feel good.

Anyone attending any outdoor 3D bow shoots to get practice in for the fall? or maybe you attend them because they're just fun? I just attended my first one of the year on Sunday. Definitely had to 'kick some rust off'.

The ones of my PSE bows are pretty adjustable. at times I need to get a nylon washer to get things perfect. it'd make things quieter with no question. speed though has to depend on the bow geometry and how you set it up. as has been said if the arrow doesn't leave the string at the right time, before it gets to a point past rest where it slows down, it'll actually be slower than with your other stop.

he's strong as heck and pulls more weight to shoot a heavier arrow faster. that helps fight wind but all he does day in and day out is lift and shoot. that's his job. he's not the best but pretty good.

NY DEC: 2013 Deer Harvest Results are In
dbHunterNY replied to burmjohn's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
I know some DEC reps for some WMUs are reluctant to give the amount of permits you actually need. they don't give them out because they don't think you'll be able to fill them and they don't want too many taken in a small area. I've been open to taking doe for a while now and usually take a couple each year and figured that was alright. now I realize about 30% should be taken. when I drive in my car or am out in the woods and count the deer as green up happens, I'm in awe at the realized number of deer that would need to be taken. most have a mentality that was far from taking does than even mine was. -
not in the area. you've got to be patient and more passive with suggestions. younger kids tend to take criticism as getting in trouble. if you see they aren't having fun anymore then you have to break. otherwise you'll both get frustrated. try not to focus only on form and have to shooting a boring target the whole time. mix it up and turn things into a game. don't know any coaches down your way.

Ground Blind for bowhunting
dbHunterNY replied to THHuntNY's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
yea I'd stick with the hub style blinds. a vertical window helps too. -
ok slack makes sense. not a Mathews man but it looks like a nice setup you've got.

well it'd be possible with a consistent wind to reach out around 600 yards. you'd have to be a little lucky and dialed in right to hit the woodchuck in the first shot or second if it were to come back out. little better in central or western NY but here around the base of the Adirondacks the wind could be going in four different directions by the time the bullet gets there. with the scope mounts being level I can't get much more range out of the setup though, as I'll reach the max within the range of the turrets. on an 80 degree summer day in the area I shoot, at 480 yards I'm already at 8 MOA and I've only got 20 MOA of elevation for the scope (10 up and 10 down).

I agree with the string replacement. They won't do it unless there is an issue. Strings are a normal wear item. yea I know they're supposed to. what I'm saying is from the picture the cord looks almost pulled tight at rest. It's hard to imagine it's going up at the right time, but pictures can be deceiving. it just looks "off".

that QAD HD Pro drop away doesn't look like it's timed right. does it go up in the last inch or less of the draw cycle???
-
first one was probably 190 yards. shot rang out and the second showed up just down over a bank and off to my right. it was probably 40 yards. I'm really looking to setup on one out past 400 yards and film it with my camera and tripod. if I put the camera 2ft off to my side you'd be able to see the bullet trace all the way to the chuck.

I know they've had problems with EHD for a while.

Also it helps to have a good adhesive for inserts that can take shock. I've found found BSI insta-flex+ cyanoacrylate works well.

Sorry guys yea IBO speed. It's a PSE Evo. The rubber bludgeon heads hold up with high KE bows I've found. I use judos too but they'll pass through or sometimes break the springs/claws off. Especially shooting into softer green wood sometimes the judos heads get stuck and buried. That's what I've found. Bludgeon heads are also usually noisier in flight than judos.

Setup is a Savage model 12 in 223 Rem, Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40mm scope with target turrets and sun shade, Caldwell XLA pivoting bipod (tall enough to use while sitting), and Slogan Outdoors Ultraflex sling. I get sub-MOA with Blackhills loaded Hornady 60gr Vmax ammo and on a good morning or evening with no breeze I can clover leaf shots at 200 yards. Factory ammo and rifle, so I got lucky with the combo.

Tough to get out sometimes but I did take 82 two summers ago with this gun.
-
That time of the year again where I rid the farm fields of hole digging woodchucks and fill in some left over holes so we don't break any equipment. Had an hour or so of time Saturday evening. Got a couple. Some what of a mile stone as it was chuck number #99 and 100 with the gun in the picture.

Strutting bird: do you pull him out to shoot?
dbHunterNY replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Turkey Hunting
well not just that but the head of a bird in full strut also makes a small target. -
