  1. His dad Hal and his dad's friend Lenny or something like that. Neither one gave a shit but they had years of sleighing monsters under their belt. They were happy just to get back in the woods without shitting their pants or getting cold right after they sat down.
  2. never made it out that far to hunt. farthest was driving to NW Oklahoma. drove so didn't worry. anyone I've known packages it in town and ships it back frozen.
  3. It's been a long time since hunting bigger woods. still I think about using shooting sticks. i'm torn. I've use them still hunting all the time with success in less remote terrain. I think the walking stick aspect and stability if you need it off set weight. I remember a lot of time deer would be coming down ridges and it's pretty far shot without being next to a tree to rest against. @Buckmaster7600 know anyone that uses them tracking in big woods?
  4. makes you wonder how many world records have died before maturity before coming close or surpassing the milo hanson buck. i'd bet it's a lot despite that buck was likely 4.5 yrs old and not quite there yet. what happened in Nebraska with no hunting for multiple years is a crazy thought that amazes me but would scare the hell out of me if applied today though.
  5. I've gotta to go get mine and take down to inspect them. seems i'm getting lax leaving them up all year. didn't always do that.
  6. Just got done watching a deer research webinar on using drones with thermal cameras to assess deer population in urban areas. Time for a beer. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  7. Practically running over my feet last time at the farm. Never sit still versus in the woods. Dont think I could hit one with anything but a shotshell. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  8. thought about picking up some shotshells for the 9mm. they're all over the barn yard at the farm. not sure why there's so many this year. i'd leave them alone but their getting up into the vehicle and equipment and into bldgs in places.
  9. the house is only an 1.2 acres. no dedicated range but have 3D targets for bow setup often out to 60 or so yards safely. can't legally shoot a gun (pistol) without asking a handful of neighbors to allow discharge so I don't. no worries as 12 minutes down the road is my family farm. no dedicated range there but ability to setup targets out to 750 yd. neighbor's property is a valley vs our mountain top farm so he has ability to set targets up at just over 1,000 yd. 12 minutes down the road in the other direction i have unlimited access to a club with (2) trap house ranges, indoor 50 ft pistol range, outdoor covered 40 yd pistol range with reactive targets, outdoor covered 50 yd archery range, and outdoor covered 300 yd rifle range.
  10. With the one miss high right I thought I'd go to the range to check the gun. Verified drop with furthest 300 yard target and zero at 200 yards. Turns out the miss must have been all me. White target is 300 with a high left screw up. Shot broke and i just didnt have crosshairs on target. 200 yds is black used up shoot-n-c. I had to use crude felt lined wooden blocks at range as i couldnt find my shorter range bipod. My natural aim was low and forcing it up for bottom 4 shots. Top few shots i tried to adjust but little awkward hold to get elevation. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  11. .222 Rem isnt common these days for ammo. Honestly any real accurate deer rifle works if you can afford and get ahold of ammo it likes. Look up varmint rifles and you'll see a trend in calibers. My gun has served me well but I wouldn't go with the stock I have. Getting good repeatable cheek contact is tough vs say a nice adjustable raised comb. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  12. Al and Dan said it's all about shot placement and I agree. it'll kill a chuck if you hit it in the vitals but won't put it down at all. best get within 50 or so yards and hit it in the head if you're using a 22LR. I flooded one out from under my garage at my old house. I used my Ruger 22LR pistol and to be safe I aimed for vitals and it took a handful of shots but only slowed it down a little. I know where I hit it because it was my competition pistol and I was only a few yards away.
  13. I was scrolling through some topics and threads. I find it funny that it matters so much what a "pro"...motional staff hunter uses. I know of pro staff switching brands for all kinds of reasons.
  14. it's another tool that has it's limitations. is it really that important to know a deer's exact age down to the year? not really in my mind and i'm fairly serious about it. it helps a lot to have the right trail cam pictures that are time stamped. see it in the field with optics. then send in the teeth to back check your method, as well as include any history with a particular deer. at the end of the sit on stand it really doesn't matter, because what trips your trigger is what it is. aging on the hoof though gives you a realistic idea of how big any particular buck will get. beauty of trail cams or sightings is you can make up your mind vs deciding during that moment of truth.
  15. this county of Rensselaer said there are no phases. everything's open at everyone's discretion. if a business gets fined we'll all chip in and send the fine in pennies.
  16. They definitely stick to certain spots you mentioned out this way too. Often the spots that are easiest to setup on get burnt out. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  17. Find any farm land and they're there to some degree. I'm not really vested time wise in recent years but still provides lots of trigger time. I really only hunt them on our farm. I've hammered every chance I could so usually only get a couple dozen each year now. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  18. Smoked babyback ribs with touch of bionic chicken seasoning and a good amount of cow massage. Had veggies on side. Also had parmesan crusted taters with bionic tater topper. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  19. Savage Arms Model 12 chambered in .223 Remington. Shoots 60gr Hornady VMax loaded by Black Hill Ammunition well. Just under 1/2 MOA if I do my part. Talley single piece rings/bases. Nikon 6-18x40mm scope. Slogan Ultraflex sling making it easier to carry without beating you up, as its heavy. Caldwell over 20" (dont remember length) pivoting bipod that seems to work just as good as a Harris. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  20. Dinner taking time this afternoon. Might as well have a beer. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  21. Not a lot around which must be a good thing. Shot 1 and missed 1. Unloaded a few hay wagons into the barn and been here all morning. only second time out but dont have time to stay longer. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  22. I've got mail@Bionic It came yesterday. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  23. Never heard of canned chicken. Good idea. Tried venison during field to fork and it was good. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  24. I've never canned anything myself but my dad and his siblings grew up on canned everything. He was 1 of 8 with 6 of them boys so they had to. Had crazy amounts of veggies and stuff canned. Even now my grandfather had a room setup to do it and another to store it. Someday I'll get into it and have a garden again. Moving to the new house it's taken a bit to get settled while working on everything and tearing up the landscape. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  25. Not a bad beer for being readily available just about anywhere. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
