  1. Never heard of it and knew about them until a Meat Eater episode. it seemed like a very cool hunt. small deer but delicious.
  2. honestly the biggest appeal of a deer drive was you drove a section of woods and didn't know what was going to run out. with trail cams now you have a pretty good idea of what's around. also if you knew something was around why would you clear the woods out and take a guaranteed chance it'll be somewhere else. also monday opener had hunting parties and get togethers the weekend prior now it's work straight to game time. not to mention the general population of hunters is getting older and can't really do it for each other as well. i'll throw out one more, that happens to be a molotov cocktail to deer drives. more often than not deer drives bent the conservation laws hard. i know of more trespassing infractions and inappropriately tagged game from deer drives than otherwise. not to say i think they're bad. they have their place and i've done them.
  3. i still have a pile of lead ammo. once it's gone i'll switch.
  4. i've used different factory loads over the years in 30-06, 30-30, and 300 win mag. Your basic Federal PowerShok, Winchester Power Point, and Remington Corelok bullets have worked great. i use 150 grain that seems to shed more energy but still has enough pentration that i've never recovered a bullet or not a hole in and out. I used 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips in 30-06 for a bit and they worked fine. For a while now I've used 150 gr Federal Fusion ammo that's a bonded spitzer boat tail design. Seem to work great and drop them more often than not. Shot Hornady SST 250gr sabots in muzzleloader with mixed results but seems that's the case with a ML regardless of what you use. Maybe next year i'll try Hornady 178gr ELD-X in 30-06. By this weekend I'll hopefully see how Hornady 120gr SST low recoil 7-08 ammo works on deer, assuming my mentee can make a good shot.
  5. correction i guess jimmie did not shoot this. they're back out this evening though. hoping for some good news. jimmie did gut this deer though. first time he did it and was a champ so he's all in i'm thinking.
  6. if the deer i got trail cam pictures of not far away came in front out Steve and I we'd have two mentees with great deer. it's a nice 4.5 yr old. good buck for here.
  7. you the man Matt! i think you're getting better. must the the Husky saw.
  8. i've had all of those except what i think i'm seeing is Super Sap. Out of the others in your picture i think i liked hurricane the least but it was still a good beer. i've had others too like alterrrr ego, spring, summer, etc. Tree House is good stuff. Along with the northern VT beers. Still have yet to make it to Trillium in Mass or Hill Farmstead in VT.
  9. A fourth mentee almost scored. My mentee Steve got to come out with me Saturday evening on opening day. He showed up when we had a family and friends hunter lunch get together outside at the farm shop. Just so happened neighbor took a respectable 8 pointer. The whole group watched the whole hunt from across the valley with binos and spotting scopes. I slapped together a pair of shooting sticks for him at the shop then went to my personal spot. Saw deer while traveling farm road to get there. We got to the spot and saw group of doe way in woods later in the sit. One young adult doe came in at 50+ yards for at least 20 minutes. We were above it on the ground. Being new to shooting a gun and hunting he couldn't get settled whenever the doe was clear of trees or brush and broadsided. Eventually it bedded in some brush until end of legal light. Cold and nerves were getting to him. He was shaking real good. He really enjoyed it. Next outing I'll have him in a popup blind more comfortable. He's hoping to free up his schedule to get back out this weekend. I pulled trail cam cards and had a nice 4.5 yr old just on the other side of the wood lot from where I set him up. I'll post up more as the hit the dirt.
  10. Mentee Hany has been at it for many hours on stand with a bow with no success and then switched to a rifle for regular season. Mentor Brian put him in a stand that had a stud of a 5.5 yr old (one the mentor had history with) right in front of his mentee. Hany like the Eric and Jimmie made the shot count!
  11. Mentee Jimmie with took a doe and is pictured here with his mentor Jesse.
  12. Mentee Eric took a doe with a crossbow prior to regular season.
  13. i think i need another beer that processing menu looks kickass compared to a lot of places out this way.
  14. i used a $50 walmart mountain bike. nothing new. bicycles have been around for quite a while. i'm not paying money for some kind of electric bike to go hunting. lol
  15. Wrong thread.... you can take off the AR tin foil hat. They cant get you here. Lol Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  18. it was probably just another expense and therefore got axed. probably more work than it's worth to contact them to find out what they thought. especially right now. they're all out in the field often and only go back to the office to do paperwork. it's 2.5 or 3.5 for age. i'm saying 2.5 yrs old but that's just a guess without the jawbone. cam picture looks like he's got the shape of a 3.5 but he's at an angle which can sometimes be deceiving. a giant can look like a dink quartering away.
  19. email the pictures and ask region 4 biologist larry bifaro. bears are in his wheel house. [email protected]
  20. i'm saying they could be but not always. you also have to know if the DEC individual that shows up has changed. i think in this case it was just a punch to know it was recorded.
  21. the 6th through the 8th was awesome days for older buck movement on trail cameras .....while i was at work of course. lol
  22. if a couple are working together to speed up the process a biologist or tech the can age and punches the holes. a grunt then rights down the info. in recent years they had a white slip of paper that was size of a restaurant order ticket. that's where they record age and other info. i'm sure i've still got a copy somewhere. not in my deer folder right now.
  23. for me it wasn't getting deeper so much as to a place with less pressure or the funneled deer from the pressure. i've rode cheap mountain bikes in out in WNY where it's flatter. you can get into and out of a spot quicker. the idea of electric bikes and pedal assist e-bikes are crazy if you can stomach the cost versus a $50 walmart throw away bike. also helps to find a spot to park and access from somewhere other than the normal trail head with everyone else. i've donated to fire departments and even nocked on doors to businesses.
