Your gun and caliber for the SZ opener ..

i've got options but i've checked and have a couple ready to go. my usual Browning ABolt stainless 30-06 will be with me. my adult new hunter/mentee will be toting an Abolt III in 7mm-08 with reduced recoil ammo. both topped with 3-9x40 scopes. farm consists of anything from heavy woods to swamps to open ag fields with shots out to hundreds of yards. we'll be setting up for something to come in nicely well within 100 yards. -
over 60 lbs and 29" draw on a 330 fps IBO bow you're good with just about any head. if you shoot the biggest cutting diameter mechanical, then i'd try to make sure you're not shooting the lightest arrow possible and taking really long shots. doesn't matter what head you're using, just put them in the right spot. even with perfect placement not all deer will bleed right away in the first 30 or so yards. i've had no blood for that far and then had to pour out seemingly in buckets. used the original Rage with great results and would hesitate using any of the current 2 blade Rage heads with your setup. I've used Rage heads since they came out. especially on quartering away shots i prefer the slip cam design for better entrance holes, less head deflection, and less loss of energy due to induced torque on the arrow shaft during impact. Rage 3 blades i have reservations about. seem like a lot going on with even the slip cam design. at times i've felt like blades contacted each other too much while deploying. they can even hangup when folding forward, technically making them illegal if an ECO really starts fishing. not the 2 blades though. always have stuck with the 2 blade heads. my preferred head over all others they don't make any more. It's a 2 blade Rage titanium. 2" cut. low profile long forward cutting edge. low profile indestructible titanium ferrule. I bought up a ton of them years ago when they go on super sale post season or due to them not moving off the shelves. Originally they were $80 for 3 heads and practice head but i'd pay around $35 or sometimes less (cost of regular Rage heads). I've blown through more deer and had those heads buried into everything from trees, dirt, rocky creek bottoms, etc. worst case was still swap out the blades and another O-ring. they'd spin true, ready for another deer. i've lost arrows with heads over the years, and i'm very low on replacement blades. not sure how much longer they'll last me.

i hunt a lot out of a climber. there's no reason that should have went down that way. using a climber with a rope style tree strap is very easy and quick. you're attached to the tree the moment you leave the ground.

You may have already started to following the Field to Fork program here in eastern NY under another thread https://huntingny.com/forums/topic/51742-2019-field-to-fork-program/ "Field to Fork is a food-focused hunter recruitment program for adults from non-hunting backgrounds..." taken from https://www.qdma.com/recruit/field-to-fork/ The Upper Hudson River Valley branch of the Quality Deer Management Association that covers NY counties of Warren, Washington, Rensselaer, and Saratoga. However, to ensure we retained enough participants and expand are range of mentors and mentee participants, we reached out to the Backcountry Hunter and Anglers group, DEC hunt ed group, and our neighboring Capital Region of NY QDMA branch. We put the word out, setup at local farmers markets, and through word of mouth we acquiring new potential hunters moving forward with the program. More on a waiting list and will likely participate next year. Participants put down a small refundable deposit to reserve the limited number of spots when starting out.

i really like the idea cell cams. eventually i'll get some. running a couple extremely cheap ones and then plan old Bushnell and Cudde's that have lasted a long time now and still keep running. i put them in spots easily accessible but i know will likely pick up target deer if in the area. stand locations and when to hunt them is done the old fashioned way. cell cam idea is really hard not to jump on. especially since i already have verizon and there's a tower right on the farm. service is so good you're missile launching capabilities are better than North Korea. lol

people do crazy things over deer. we've had cameras stolen and treestands destroyed. i write my name right on them in black permanent industrial marker. that way they know it's not just anyone who hunts that own's it. if another person gets a glimpse of it they know exactly where and who it came from. no halfass story i found it where we hunt but it's not ours BS so must be a trespasser BS. Just something I do. Not necessary saying it'd fix any problem.

I have a picture of my daughter when she was I think 3yrs old in a ballgown standing in front of the a decked out Christmas tree and the main beauty and the beast ballroom. It's annoying with crowds and prices of things. Some stuff is hard to criticize. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

no idea what you're situation is. for all everyone else here knows you've pin wheeled big game that far out countless times. 47 yards is a good poke. need a deer acting right and a stout arrow setup for getting through a mature bucks heavy rib cage that far. people would be lying to say a 160+ inches buck doesn't tempt someone to stretch there limits. still a bowhunter is either without any doubt they can make the shot or they can't say so, size of antlers has nothing to do with it. hope you get some redemption on a nice buck. good luck this season.

crazy stuff happens when you shoot a deer with an arrow. they can have deflection as they pass through, not even get there from a deer's reactive movement, could be quartering more than you realize, or you release in a different spot further off the shoulder than you thought. you did a lot of the right stuff after it went down. happens, you try to learn something from it, and then get back in the game. make sure you keep that 'T' shaped form by beind at the waist vs dropping bow arm. 15 yards away but 20+ feet up (or depending on how high you were) can be a steep angle.
