2019 Field to fork Program
dbHunterNY replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Greater Rochester Southern Tier QDMA
Honestly none of them brought that up. One of the first things we discussed was conservation and how hunting is important. They all had acknowledged meat comes from somewhere though and are interested in the whole process. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk -
Oklahoma has some really big deer. Mentality out there is different too in line with the Midwest it seemed. when weighing in my buck at the 7-eleven people other hunters seemed to think a 150 class deer was decent. to me here in NY that's huge! went to the outfitter's personal home and saw his trophy room. it was packed with turkey, a wolf, a couple more less common things for around here that i don't remember, and loads of whitetails. had shoulder mounts 150 class and past 200" right there in your face all from there. "camp" i stayed in got the sub par lesser bucks in the 140's and below. haha multiple 170's shot before i got there, just over the border in KS and back in OK. they had a 2.5 year old typical 14 pointer he pleaded with a client not to shoot but client shot it anyway. lol

2019 Field to fork Program

https://www.outdoornews.com/2019/10/07/field-to-fork-program-arrives-in-new-york-state/?fbclid=IwAR3YmNsw3vS5C9q2x8raZyy9JvZNP3IID7tFAZtFQgiy3cx6ONvrkWaZ23Y I'll say it right now though, Bob and the Rochester branch blazed the trail here in NY. The rest of us just need to follow. Also Backcountry Hunters and Anglers group, as well as the Capital District NY branch are helping out mentoring in a big way. We lost one new potential hunter due to him having family matters to deal with. He'll likely be back next season though. We're still at 9 new hunters here in the East. With Rochester's 8, that puts us at 17 new adult hunters joining the ranks this season. -

could only get them doubled, because some legislators said it wouldn't pass otherwise. if someone gets caught again within 5 years the fines triple. all we got in 2017 and it took a lot to get that. really dependent on the local judge. they don't have to go with the minimum fines and they could be into the thousands if they're willing to send a message to the public about poaching. -
Knife Sharpening ?
dbHunterNY replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
it isn't as good as sharpening by hand but gets a knife practically sharp enough and that's fine. shaving sharp edge doesn't last long so there's no point in trying to keep it. i have the Ken Onion edition. works good. -
it's like a chainsaw chain or anything else. damage to the edge takes a lot of strokes to make go away. keep count and make the same passes to keep the sides/blades the same weight and height for balance. unless your grit is real coarse you're not removing enough material to make it to the actual edge if the sides aren't looking polished. i try to go into the same cuts in the quiver foam so taking arrows in and out don't dull your edge.
-
depends on what it is. usually it's rinse, take apart, inspect for damage, wash with soap, reassemble/replace parts/sharpen, and then spin test.
-
happy bday! be sure to go for a joy ride to somewhere and celebrate.

it's a hassle but i wouldn't care. i haven't in the past and still don't. only time i'd care is if my safety was in jeopardy and it never has been. i haven't hunted long island but i've hunted albany and it seems like the same thing. you just follow the law and be respectful. those are the best spots because people don't want to deal with that crap. i sat in a treestand before with hunter orange on despite it was bow only public land. lady came out into her backyard and noticed me. yelled at me for 20 minutes. i just ignored her and then she went back inside. walked a hiking trail and have passed by hikers for an evening hunt. they would be surprised and say something stupid. still some will say "thank you, be safe, and good luck". others will give you intel.

i don't mess with ozone except for the cigarette lighter one to refresh the truck interior. anything is washed in scent and dye free detergent and dried it goes into plastic ziploc big bags though until it's used once. then regular ones go into a cedar trunk/box. carbon or scent absorbing clothes go back into a plastic ziploc big bags.

How to handle deer meat in fridge?
dbHunterNY replied to GreenHunter's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
I recently boned out a deer. I keep it in the fridge in containers with drains u till I can get to it within that week. Then I vac seal it and put it in freezerahortly after. Dry aging is too much waste with a deer being smaller cuts. Venison is so lean you dont have to age it longer than 4-7 days. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk -

2019 Field to fork Program
dbHunterNY replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Greater Rochester Southern Tier QDMA
The Upper Hudson River Valley QDMA branch had our 2nd whitetail and conservation 101 class last night. It was again at the 4H training center in ballston spa, ny. Venison tacos were the first night and last night was pulled venison sliders, snack sticks, and jerky. Other sides to go with the venison too. We covered a whitetails senses, habits, and briefly strategy on how to hunt them. Including resources for doing so. Each new hunter got a free 1 yr premium subscription On-X Hunt maps. Sunday will be hunter ed, range day with 22lr rifles, and purchasing their licenses for them. Also they'll get some goodies to use on their hunt as well. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk -

First Self Filmed Bow Kill (Public Land Doe)
dbHunterNY replied to Canis Latrans's topic in Deer Hunting
nice job. i use to film stuff for my own use and sharing with others that hunt with me. standard def so that sony cam is more or less useless now. i have a nice nikon dslr but have told myself i'm never bringing it up in a tree. if i ever dropped it out of the tree i'd puke. camera arm i found out is as important as the camera. that one seems to work good. cheap ones are hard to stay the same tightness when panning. also start and stop of motion is super jittery. your video didn't have any of that. really well done. stayed on it too after the shot not zoomed too far in. mine's good for 20 mins of HD video recording at a time. if i hike into Pine Bush I've got more to worry about more power to you. -

that'd be interesting numbers to see. hunting out in WNY vs here i don't notice any difference. seems like there's plenty hunters per sq mile out here in the east too. it is what it is. i took my doe in a brown it's down war zone as to save opportunity on the farm for others. we only take so many doe otherwise we wouldn't see anything. -
Rensselaer county's ECO Canzeri met with some local youth hunters during the NYS promoted Columbus Day weekend youth hunt. The youth hunt was organized through Capital District Sportsmen group (on facebook) and the Upper Hudson River Valley QDMA branch. Local QDM co-op landowners opened up their property to the youth hunters and their mentors. Several local landowners volunteered their property for future youth hunts. Some youth hunters couldn't make it do to sports and other conflicting activities that weekend. We plan on making this an annual event. You may have seen a Finger lakes youth hunt on the internet with many more involved. It's important to realize we have a historic antlerless deer take in this WMU of 3.2 antlerless deer per square mile per DEC, being located in the foothills of the Adirondacks. . This is less than 1/4 taken from some WMU's in central to WNY. Makes for a tall order asking already hunted property to allow access and providing opportunity. Fortunately, all had opportunity and a great weekend. Some just couldn't quite seal the deal.

yea hopefully the cleaned and took care of the bore well. it's likely worth the $400.
