  1. I think it comes down to what kind of hunter a person is. The ones that are hell bent to kill anything with any kind of bone on its head are the ones that will have a problem with AR. Like it or not there are guys out there that would rather cut a finger off than to have to say to their buddies that they didnt kill a buck last year. Then those same guys would say..Oh he was in thick brush and i thought he was bigger..Or any other excuse they can come up with. Now most hunters that live in areas with low deer populations travel to different areas to fill tags. We used to do just that on letchworth years ago. If its brown its down and fill them tags!!! Then back home it was racks only. Now for me its a mature deer or no deer. I have never went without meat in the freezer. You will never make everyone happy...Including myself because i want 1 buck a year..TOTAL...You pick the weapon and 8 weeks of deer hunting total... See we all cant be happy!!!
  2. Enjoy the view and let him walk is my view. Even tho he is a 2 yr old i would give him another year, Myself... Now if you are just in it for the gravy, I say fire away and enjoy the meals. Rack wise he might get a little more mass but with the messed up pedical he will be limited on what he can make!
  3. I always plant atleast 2 acres of corn to leave standing all year long. We have 600 acres of corn on the main farm this year so when thats gone my plots of alfalfa and standing corn are going to be Hot,Hot,Hot!!!
  4. Oh, I am not calling anyone out by any means!! Your statement of 135in 8 point was very strong and kinda out there. I mean how many guys reading these words have even takin a 135in buck in Ny State. I am no Roger Raglin..lol but i think i can hold my own as a hunter, I have 700 acres of great land to hunt and i hunt some top state land and i only have 3 of that size. Heck i bet many have never seen a true 135in Buck. They are not behind every tree thats for sure!! Now with this AR coming into play we might start seeing a few more of those pop up! Fyi...My captive bucks better be 130 to 180 inches as yearlings or i would be out of business fast!
  5. You might want to look at the last few years harvest posts. I believe you will see a few taken in an AR zone and this hot air will tell ya its workin just fine in the areas i hunt. Hope it just keeps gettin better!!
  6. I would like to see some pics of these 135in 8pts with a broken tine that you say are so easy to find. Heck i would like to even know how many on here have even ever shot a 135in buck. And how many?
  7. Its all about the $...You would not buy a playboy book with susan boyle on the front cover would you? You also know that what you see on the front cover of most girly mags, You will never get but you sure like to look at it. No different in deer. You see something on the cover,(Even though its something we have but you will probably never have) that you like to look at, even though most will never have it. Mind games i guess and plays on emotions.
  8. Dont fool yourself. Any tree hugger see's a deer get shot or layin in the back of a truck does not care where that deer got shot...They want to know why?
  9. How many of those 135 inch 8 pointers with a broken tine have you seen in Ny State. Not many i would guess....
  10. But on a side note lets not forget how good we had it. With me pushin the big 50 i can remember when i first started with the friday to sunday party times. I could go out with $5 bucks and tear up a night. For that 5 dollars i could go out on the town or go to the woods with a case of Genny beer and a pack of smokes and get some change back. 99 cents a 6 pack (bottles) and 55 cents for a pack of smokes. Then you threw your change together with yur bud's and got ya's a 5th of southern comfort. Talkin about buds...Well we wont talk about those. lol... Times sure have changed but i sure remember the good old days!!
  11. Thats cool!! I have always wanted to do that but truth is im not real good with a compass. I have a GPS for when i hunt Fort Drum and that has saved my butt twice but i have also been in spots on letchworth where i have tried to mark a buck i shot and had to service. I think i could get lost in walmart. I have learned the areas i hunt, Like Letchworh, Like my own bathroom. I commend anyone who hunts the big woods like the benoint boys and i guess yurself. I do hunt up in Fish Creek wildlife area and some of that place is like the catskills or the dacks but that is only late season muzzle and there is always atleast a little snow to get me home.
  12. I would have to ask if you mean any deer or a mature deer? Two total different animals. I have been lucky enough to take a buck with my bow now for 9 years runnin and 3 book bucks. . I also must say that i have some great land up here in the north to hunt but all 3 bucks came out of the tier and anyone that knows me knows where they came from....State Land.. To kill any buck i would say good land, good weather and being able to put your time in. To kill a mature buck you need to know what they are going to do and where they are going to do that. That takes a huge investment of time learning the whitetail deer,For me..About 40 years. When it comes to bucks a 3yr old plus buck is and acts nothing like a 1 or 2 year old. When it comes to gun hunting things are a little more on your side when it comes to taking a mature deer just because you can reach out to them but you still need to know the animal and have the place and time on your side!
  13. Bowhunting one night and about an hour before dark i have 3 yotes cross the field in front of me heading in the direction i have to go on the way out. About 15 minutes left of daylight i have another yote come out underneath me, as i draw back he busts me and runs behind my stand and stops. I get the pin on him and let er go. Hits him..He yelps and runs into the thick brush behind me. Few minutes of quite and then he starts growling and yippin and snappin his jaws like hes tryin to bite something. Now its dark and time to get down, Im a little jumpy now and just before i let my bow down a pack of the start unloading with yips and yaps and then the all start howling. Well the ones that went by me the first time( The way i have to go to get to the house) Start howling back at the pack next to me and the one i hit is still growling behind me. Well thats a bit to much for me with stick and string so i get on the cell phone and call the wife to drive back and pick me up in the truck...She says its pitch dark..How will i find you??? I say just look for the light up in the trees..You cant miss me because im not gettin down!!! Thank god she came and picked me up at the base of the tree! Went back the next night to sit again and walked in to find the yote i hit....Found the blood,The hair,The arrow....No yote!!! Way to many yotes around here!!!
  14. They are there!! Ya just might have to dig a little deeper to find them. Are the numbers like they were 15 years ago? Not even close. I still see groups of deer at a time while hunting the park. Really very few places we go that we dont see numbers of deer. They have had AR in place now for what 3 years. The bucks are getting bigger, older and smarter. The sharpshooters took a few off the park itself and the hundreds of DMAPS they hand out do a number on them on the edge of the park. I believe the east side is starting to get better than the west side. We keep hip boots on the bottom and cross the river at times to hunt the east side bottom and a couple little islands in the river. We rope to the bottom from the west side as its much quicker down and very easy to get over to the east without having to go down off the river road. Keep hunting...You will find them!!!
  15. Unused and unscented might wok( Did i just say that out loud?) I think you should stick to tinks or some other kind of drag though, lol I use one of those long feathers that you used to see on big bird when you were younger. Maybe some on here still watch it yet today!!!
  16. 35 years of hunting, 700 acres of land and i have never owned a cam. I guess it would be nice to see what is walking around but in my eyes it really does not matter because we all know how mature bucks move around duing the rut. When it comes to bucks knowing whats out there does not matter to me. Anyone that has taken a book buck or even a mature buck knows the feeling you get when you know you are looking at a shooter. When you see a buck that makes you flip and just about come unglued in your treestand you will know its something special. I dont even think about shooting if i dont just about fall out of the tree on first sight. Everyone has different ways of doing things Cams are a tool to help but there is nothing better than that fist sight shock that we get when we see them for the first time. I would also think the scent we leave around the cam site would not be a good thing. IMHO
  17. Its a face full of bacon!!!! Do you have pigs in your area?? Looks to me on the right hand side of the pic is the pigs nose(Left side hole of the snout) then a couple inches up from that hole is the eye and then the top left of the pic is the ear. MAYBE???? What do ya think???
  18. If you know what you are doing when working with scents you can have great results on mature whitetails. I dont use the canisters to put my Pure Heat scent out. When i use Pure Heat and the rut is on its all about layin a scent trail. You want to get your scent from a farm that you know they bring their does in Pure Heat!!!
  19. There ya go!! Just what said all along. You get 1 buck tag a year. You must have it checked by a check station to make sure its reported. If you are caught with a buck not checked bye bye deer hunting for a couple years!!! If everyone has faith in the powers that make these laws then there must be something they think is going to help the state of Ny. They did not just put AR into effect in such and such areas because they got a bunch of letters. You should know our great state does not work that way. They think the state has something to gain or the law does not pass!!
  20. Look at the trees and the background on the pic above and then look at the trees and the background of the pic on facebook. Lower left side of facebook page. ??????
  21. Not a slam bud but do you think maybe you are going about things the wrong way. I guess its not for everyone in every area but i have had many mature bucks turn inside out to try and find a well laid scent trail. I say dont give up on it and keep trying scents. Once you have a mature buck come in to it during bow season, You will be hooked!!!
  22. Good try!! I would think you had better game than that. Its kinda hard to call someone out that admits to something first. You see thats where the problem lies. I know what kind of bucks i hang my tags on each year and they would make any AR law anywhere in the country. You on the other hand cant say that, Hence you have such a problem with AR...Oh you say its not about you, Your speaking for all that dont have their own voice. Boy you will be in a world of hurt if AR goes statewide huh?
  23. Dont tell me you are one of those guys that would rather cut their sac off than to say you diidnt kill a buck last year, And then have a dozen excuses as to why you shot that little crotch horn hangin in the tree,With someone elses tag on it. Dont whine to me because the laws came down that i agree with. When they get rid of 3 months worth of deer season in the north then i will be real happy. North should be set up just like the tier!
  24. I live in the NZ and have no problem with the way the season is now, I get to enjoy bow hunting and ML before anyone else and still have the option to go to the SZ to bow hunt... Yeah i just found out about where you hunt, So you get all kind of tags and you hunt all over the state but you still like the idea of killing the dumbest deer in the woods??? Wow, You also say this is not about you???? Well who is it about and where are they tellin us what they feel????
