  1. In order to hunt on Cornell property, you have to be registered by 10/1. To hunt public or private land not on Cornell, but still within the DMFA, you can register 5 minutes before you head to your stand, print out tags, and go. I'm heading to my stand right now.

    LayOff

I know the layoff game. I was supposed to have work all year, but with the lack of snow, but shitty weather, we haven't been trucking at all, nor plowing, so I've been sitting home waiting for a phone call to work. Sucks since I can't get unemployment due to my business, but I have been able to build it up a bit since I've been off.
  3. I know a guy who hunts deer with a .22 Hornet. He only takes head shots and they drop in their tracks. I won't hunt with him because of his tactics. I much prefer to have something that has some mass and will leave a blood trail.
  4. To be honest, I haven't scouted either one, but there's usually great hunting on both. They're just a couple of miles from each other, so you could do one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
  5. Knock on wood, we haven't had an outage here in a couple of years. I have a Honda gas generator that I can plug my fridge, freezers, and coal stove into if I need to, but that all depends on me being home when the power goes out. My wife can fire up the generator and plug stuff in, but she hasn't mastered lighting the coal stove yet. I need to get a standby, but they're out of my price range at the moment.
  6. Sorry, no experience with any callers, but I do know that when I put freezer burned meat, or even dog food out, I stand a very good chance of sending a damn yote to meet it's maker. I'll be after them hard this winter. Worst deer season ever.
  7. As a vet, I have NEVER used the "water and left hand" process. I always used toilet paper and, according to Army Doctrine, dug a hole and buried it.
  8. Unless I get out of work early tomorrow, the fat lady has already sung here, til the DMFA season in January.
  9. There's places to hunt not on Cornell property, but unless you know someone, you're probably stuck on Treman or Buttermilk Falls State Parks, which are bow only. Still some good deer there though. I took a nice doe off Buttermilk a few years ago
  10. It depends on where you hunt. Search DMFA on DEC website. You cannot hunt Cornell property if you're not registered by Oct 1, but there's a couple of state parks that are in the focus area. I'll be hunting private land right near Cornell with plenty of nice does.
  11. If you're worried about the XTPs, check this out. I shot this at a salt block in the cow pasture that I was walking through on my way back to the truck. The farmer left it there when he move the cows to a different pasture before deer season and I wondered what the XTPs would do to it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
  12. Unless he has shot at 75 yds, he has no idea what his round is going to do at that range. I know where I hunt is a max shot of 228 yds, and yes I've set up targets at that very spot so that I know exactly how my round will impact at that range, so I know how much to hold over the vitals to get a clean kill. I do this with both of my MLs, my 220F, my .30-06, and my .308. Preparation is part of hunting. If you're not gong to be prepared, don't hunt.
  13. That'd be me after the first shot! I always carry a backup load, and I always load it after I shoot something, but I've never needed it and I'm not very fast at reloading.
  14. TC Pro Hunter FX with 3-9x40 Bushnell scope and TC 209 WIldcat with irons. Both shooting the same load 100 gr by volume 777 loose powder 300 gr .452" Hornady XTP in a black MMP sabot CCI 209 shotgun primers
  15. I got my TC FX Pro Hunter and TC 209 Wildcat tuned up this afternoon and will be out Fri-Sun all day. The PH is my main and the Wildcat is my thick woods piece. Can't wait for the cold weather, just hope it doesn't snow and I get called into work to plow!
  16. I just texted my boss "Not feeling well, see ya monday", Headed to the stand in a few minutes. I didn't lie. I'm sick at the thought of not filling a single tag during gun season for the first time. Can't kill them from my machine.
  17. .45-70 would be my first choice, but I'd have no issues grabbing my Winchester 94 in 44 mag.
  18. Well, I cooked it up in fajitas tonight. I can't say it's bad but the texture is a bit off for me. Wife and daughter tried a bite but wouldn't take anymore. I guess it's going to stay in the gut pile from now on. The yotes will enjoy it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
  19. So, after my wife shot a nice young doe today, I had the pleasure of field dressing it. I called my brother-in-law, who loves deer heart to see if he wanted the heart. He did. However, his daughter is running a fever and he won't be able to get here in a few days to get it. I've never cooked it, but I have it sitting in a ziplock bag in my fridge, so I may as well cook it up. I need recipies.
  20. I fed one a 20g slug this morning as it was chasing 3 does across my field. Was just about to drop a nice fat doe when he popped out of the brush line.

    Tag soup

I took a walk today and pissed in 8 scrapes along the edge of my field. I haven't seen anything in weeks, I figured it couldn't hurt. I just wish I had more because I only hit about half of the scrapes!

    Tag soup

I know the feeling. I got a doe opening day of Xbow, but haven't seen much since. I saw 27 deer in my neighbor's cut corn and hay fields just before sunset tonight, but none in my field. Hopefully, this means that they're starting to move a little bit. This may well be the first gun season that I don't get one, which will suck big time.
  23. I'm VERY familiar with Bear Swamp. I will not hunt there. There's WAY too much pressure with all the guys hunting there. It's one of the only public lands in the area and is HEAVILY pressured.
  24. Coming from a military background and shooting competitively for years, I favored the rifle. When I moved to a county that was shotgun-only, it's now open to rifle but 1 mile away that county is not, I started looking for a slug gun that felt like a rifle to me. I shot my buddy's Savage 220, and bought it from him the same day. It feels like a rifle and I'm not afraid to take a shot out to 200 yds with it. I haven't hunted with a rifle since, and I see no need to. It's got no more kick than my .30-06, in fact I think it's less and is just as accurate.
