  1. Hahaha. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not the case. I just thought it was odd that the deer stopped coming around right about the time it showed up.
  2. Will a stray cat who has taken up residence at my mother-in-law's place affect the deer population there at all? Reason I ask is that I haven't seen a single deer there since this cat showed up and started patrolling the field behind her garage, that I usually take at least a couple of deer out of every year. I took a doe on 11/7, and haven't seen a thing since. This cat showed up shortly after that. Thoughts?
  3. http://www.scout.com/outdoors/whitetail-deer/story/1598735-deer-recipes-homemade-venison-vegetable-soup I've made this twice since I found it, I'll definitely be making it again soon. Freezes well too so you can save it for later
  4. Damned transparent tailgates ruin all my fun.
  5. Wait til morning. If you jumped it, it's not hit as well as you thought. Go out at first light and get your deer.
  6. Eddie, Try AMSOIL Quickshot. I don't start my bike, quad, chain saw, weed eater, boat, or lawn mower without it in the tank. It's a stabilizer and cleaner so it will not only prevent issues associated with ethanol, but it will clean up gunk that's already built up. Link in my sig.
  7. Really, this is the only picture of deer that really matters to me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
  8. Hornady SST's out of my Savage 220F. I've never had to track or fire a second shot using them. Cannot say the same for Core-Lokts out of my .30-06. I'll be switching once the core-loks are gone. The SST ML round is the same as the 20g SST, and that's worked wonderfully for me as well. Turkeyfeathers, you know that you don't need to use a 3" 12ga right? My 220F shooting 2 3/4" SSt's kicks just a little more than a .22LR. I'll NEVER fire any of the 12ga in my safe ever again unless SHTF and that's all the ammo I have left.
  9. I love this recipe, the stew meat gives it texture and something to chew on. Venison Chili 1 pound dry kidney beans 1 pound ground venison 1 pound venison stew meat, in 1/2-inch chunks 2 Tbsp. oil 2 cloves garlic, minced = 2 tbsp 3 teaspoons chili powder 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. pepper 28-ounce can tomatoes, diced 1 large onion, diced 1/8 tsp dried ground jalapeno pepper ¼ tsp. cumin 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped 1/2 cup masa flour flour – All purpose flour will work, but not as well Rinse beans and place in a large soup kettle. Add 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt; cover the pot and bring to a boil. Boil gently for about 2 hours, until beans are tender. Brown meat in a large skillet containing oil and garlic. Add chili powder, salt and pepper. Cover and saute for an hour. Drain the beans and add 1½ quarts water, tomatoes, onion, ground jalapeno, cumin and parsley. Simmer for an hour, then add meat mixture. Stir masa flour into 1 cup water to form a paste and blend into chili to thicken. Simmer for about half an hour, adjust the seasonings and serve. Add some buttered garlic bread, cheese toast or some great homemade cornbread, and you’re set for a super meal!
  10. I have a training meeting Saturday in Lancaster, PA so I'll miss opening day. I didn't make the schedule. If I did, it'd have been yesterday! Regardless, I'll be in the ground blind for the morning hunt Sunday, then in the ladder stand after lunch.
  11. I have a Ventilator 165 and I love it. I shot probably 30 different x bows when I was shopping for one last year and I kept coming back to the Scorpyd. It's got the feel I was looking for and is accurate. I can shoot decent groups out to 100 yds, but would never shoot a deer at that range.
  12. Yesterday, I didn't see anything in my stand during my afternoon hunt, so I climbed down at 430, knowing there was still 20 minutes of legal shooting time left, because I wanted to wander to the edge of the field and see if anything was there. Sure enough, a decent doe was standing 40 yds quartering away and hadn't a clue I was there. I took up a good rest and let my Scorpyd do its job. I heard the bolt hit her, she fell down, then got up and ran into the woods. I looked for my bolt, but couldn't find it in the tall grass, I did see some nice blood, so I went back to the house and had dinner. I went out after dinner but didn't have a very good light, so I backed out til this morning. Found her deader than a door nail 30 yds from where she went into the woods. Probably 50 yds total from where I hit her. Anyone else using Toxic broadheads? I used them on the recommendation of the shop where I bought my Scorpyd, and man he was right. They do put a hole in deer like a shotgun slug and leave a blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow.
  13. Savage 220F, nikon 3-9x40, w/Hornady SST 250gr FTX slugs. Or Remington 700 in .30-06, nikon 3-9x40 w/Hornady SST 150 gr. Or TC Pro Hunter FX, Nikon 3-9x40 with 300 gr .452 Hornady XTP in a black MMP sabot. I'll decide that morning once I decide which stand I'm hunting.
  14. If you can, figure out where the deer go when they get spooked, then go there before they get spooked. I was constantly frustrated by the guy who used to ride his wheeler just off the property line at my mother in law's place, until I figured out that the deer just went deeper into the woods, still on my MIL's property. I don't hunt that stand often, but if I see his light on when I drive by on my way up there, you bet I'm hunting that stand because I know he'll be riding through just before daylight and pushing deer right towards me.
  15. I have 2 trusted butchers that I take my deer to, depending on how I want it cut. I also have a 3rd that I trust if I need him. These 3 are all friends and I have no doubt that I'm getting my own deer back. If none of them can do it, I'll take a day off from work and do it myself, however the wife will be slightly pissed when she sees me cutting up a side of venison on the kitchen table! She loves venison, she just prefers that it doesn't get cut up in her kitchen.
  16. I've done 20 pints of salsa, all with ingredients from the garden, and 16 pints of peaches bought at the local farm stand. I want to do spaghetti sauce next year, but I love me some salsa when I get home from work! Local Wegmans' has pickling cukes in stock, I may pick up some to try my hand at dills.
  17. Remington 700 in .30-06, nice big doe on opening morning 14 years ago.
  18. I love ABT's but BJ's down here stopped carrying them and I can't seem to find good ones right now. Sucks because I was going to do a bunch of them at my hog roast this coming Saturday
  19. MItchell's Western Store in Auburn or Double J in Cortland both sell hats.
  20. I only take boiler room shots. Period. I want a round that will do the job at ranges from 10-200 yds. Therefore, I use either my Savage 220F or my Model 700 in .30-06 or my TC in the late season. I don't care how many deer have been taken in the past with varmint calibers, I'll stick with my proven rounds. My father-in-law only hunts with his .22 Hornet. I don't hunt with him because I don't feel that's an ethical caliber on deer. If you have to take a head or a neck shot because your round won't do the job on the boiler room, you have no business using that round on deer, IMO.
  21. I have plenty of SSTs sitting on my shelf as backups. I used to use them exclusively in my TC, until I switched to the XTP. I wouldn't hesitate to use them at all, I've just grown more towards the XTP for some reason.
  22. Those words have never crossed my mind, let along my lips.
  23. My father in law told me when I first started dating my wife that he didn't have a problem going BACK to prison.
